I wonder what sort of side we will put out....with all the injuries and fringe players like origi/minamino no longer here and best kids out on loan like morton it does not seem as obvious as last year....

Maybe this?

Kelleher

Ramsey
Phillips
Gomez
Tsimikas

Bajcetic
Jones
Oxlade

Carvalho
Clark
Stewart

Maybe Milner plays in MF and Jones or Ox play in the front 3. Could Doak start?

That’s not a bad side.

Shame Kaide Gordon’s been injured so long. That’s a career-defining year or two to miss out on. People were raving about that Polish kid too, but he’s never made a breakthrough.

Balls. Audacity. Accuracy. Acne.

I don't ask for much.

This one looks like being a run-out for the kids, plus first-team fringe players like Queef (or Adrian), Nat and Ox. We haven't been especially good at back-to-back trophy wins for a long while now (the last trophies retained were the league and League Cup back in 1983/84!), so the odds suggest we won't go far in this season's League Cup, but this season's League Cup doesn't really matter. The post-World Cup calendar is already stacked so these additional games are just clutter.

Derby are currently on the fringes of a play-off spot in League One and changed their manager in September. No idea how they play, and looking at their squad list, they've got a number of older heads who once bummed around the lower half of the PL while being managed by the likes of Pulis or Bruce. Will they look at this game as a chance to take a scalp? Or will they be more concentrated on putting their efforts into getting back into the second tier?

Yeah real shame for Gordon.

Is that Musiałowski? I honestly don't know anything about him outside seeing his name a few times.

Was just thinking about the team of kids we had to put out in this at Aston Villa in 2019 when we were at that world club lark....who is where now?

Kelleher - still here nailed on to play Weds

Hoever - left

Van Den Berg - out on loan

Boyes -  left

Gallacher - left

Kane - left

Chirivella - left

Christie-Davies - left

Hill - Still here?

Longstaff - left

Elliott - 1st team regular

Lot of players on the left there.

If you're the holders you should never surrender a cup the following season., nor, if you're currently mid-table, should you throw away an alternative means of getting into European.

You only need to look at the youngsters' results in the Football League Trophy to know that it would be too much of a gamble to only play the kids. Give the back-up players a run-out, blend in a few of the youngsters, use the five subs to give a chance to some of the others. But take a proper professional attitude into the game.

We've relatively few going to the World Cup so if Klopp wants, he can keep a strong XI going in this while using 5 subs and keeping things fresh for the last game against Southampton.

I'd still be giving valuable and much-needed game time to Kelleher, Ramsay, Phillips, Bajcetic and Carvalho.
