UHD and portable hard drive

I have a UHD TV. It is a Samsung with a built in media player (UE55MU6100).

I plug a portable hard drive into the usb point and the picture stutters and freezes when playing 2160p films.

Is there  minimum requirement for the hard drive for these files?

The portable hard drive is powered by the usb point and not external power

I would suggest that there's not enough power running the external HDD. From a Google search the USB ports are the older USB 2.0, so it may also be the transfer rate of the file from the HDD.

What file format are you playing, and how big is the file?

Have you tried with a large capacity flash drive? No moving parts, less power required.
