Some of the hysteria about this really is depressing. The club enters into talks with another club for a player, the news gets out (in this day and age, who'd have thunk it?), and people start whining about how 'embarrassing' it all is. It's just a standard bit of business, which may or may not work out. Wait and see. No reason to get angry or aggrieved.11 points

20 months for that lady who stacked it pushing a burning wheelie bin at the police https://x.com/thenorthernecho/status/1821915577260065008?s=46&t=XY_74lvBgCrP3d4jS_CNeQ7 points

Stick with it Stig, it's a slow burner. I only started liking it the second time I watched the first series over again. I'd expected something instantly monumental due to people raving about it, but it's not that kind of show. The enjoyment comes from the call backs, the story arcs getting paid off and the slow burn character development. The wire is probably the most respectful of its audience of any show I've ever seen, the downside of that is that it starts as though you already know what's going on. I sat there thinking "who the fuck is that? Is he a lawyer or a cop? Who is she, is that his Mrs?". You're dumped straight into it. But the show is basically about how a society/city works/doesn't work. Once you get your bearings you'll love it.5 points

I get that these athletes all want gold but even getting there makes you the cream of the crop, a silver is one hell of an achievement.4 points

My mate in work has got a lad with cerebral palsy and there was disability tickets available for tonight’s athletics and tomorrow in the velodrome. He’s drove over this morning and is back Sunday. His lad will be absolutely buzzing, I’m well jealous now I’d have loved to have gone.4 points

I was sitting in my paradise of a back garden taking in the last of the evening's sun with my vintage Ipod on @KMD7 Mary, Brendan and his two sisters that I quite fancied but fucked me off before they'd even met me 1880's mega-mix shuffle and found real delight in listening to mostly solo artists from nostalgia 7" singles buying days. Here are a few, feel free to add your favourites, purchases, guilty pleasures or utter abhorrence regarding the entire decade and concept of solo crooners.3 points

Best music video of all time for me Clive. I bought one of these suits in navy pinstripe and wore it to a wedding surrounded by the drainpipe kecks, brown belt and shoes Brigade, and the Mrs was like "you look like a 20s gangster" and I was like "well yeah".3 points

Agree with Bob, KJT was a gold prospect but never the favourite. This is Thiam's 3rd Olympic gold now. Both ran terrific 800m times. Easy to point to if she had just done this or that but the same could be said for Thiam. Thiam is just too deadly in the field events.3 points

Watched 5 episodes of Season one (rewatch), I always remembered that D'Angelo was the most likeable drug dealer in fictional history and about 15 years on from when I first watched it, nothings changed. Boss character.3 points

Dunno, these are the same people who believe in 15 minute cities and that the Magna Carta could be used to break lockdown.3 points

I don't even think it's a British thing so much as a human thing. I mean, the Kenyan Asians were only leaving Kenya in the first place because they were suffering racism at the hands of black Kenyans. Tribalism is hard-wired into our species, it requires effort to overcome that tendency.3 points

marina hyde in the guardian How about: address ever-increasing wealth inequality? If that seems a weird answer, then maybe the wrong questions are being asked. Britain has just witnessed the worst far-right street violence since the 1970s. As the FT reports, seven out of 10 of the most deprived areas in the UK saw riots this past fortnight. Placing asylum hotels in these areas was the decision of the previous Conservative government. Who has this profited – other than the private companies that have raked in huge sums?3 points

I think there's a big lesson for anti-racists and the wider labour movement. The fact is that the "feral underclass" exists (created by neoliberal austerity) and the racists have found a way to reach these people with their lies; we have failed to do the same with our truth. In Liverpool, this has been exacerbated by the complacency which has grown since a series of set-piece victories against the Fascists that we've been dining out on for years.3 points

I’ve never really had a strong opinion on Musk - hear the views from each side and it never resonated, but after all this recently, I am now firmly in the “what a fucking cunt” faction. Blurt of a man3 points

Yeah i know what you mean. I think each series has to be taken as one, where the likes of the sopranos and breaking bad have very strong individual episodes. I rarely think of the wire in terms of "that" episode, like I do with other great shows. They're like chapters of a book.3 points

On the subject of Chelsea, I met up with my mate who works there for the first time in ages recently. The club is a fucking mess, Boehly has been ‘sacked’ as Chairman by Eghbali for the shitshow he’s presided over and Eghbali thinks he should run the club. Boehly has thrown his toys out the pram over the public humiliation and wants to sell his stake in the club. But they both have a right to approve any sale and Eghbali has said he’s going to black ball anyone Boehly wants to sell to. Basically Eghbali has sacked Boehly, told him he’s his bitch and he can’t leave unless he says so. They have 2 co-sporting directors in Stewart and Winstanley but the recruitment side is a fucking joke. Stewart was meant to be coming in as Winstanley’s boss but had a longer gardening leave period so they chose to promote Winstanley for one transfer window. When Stewart came in and they tried to demote Winstanley he threatened to sue and they fudged the situation as he was only a couple of months into a 5 year contract. Stewart and Winstanley don’t get along. Winstanley is Boehly’s guy and Stewart is Eghbali’s. It’s got to the point they each have their own transfer budget as they won’t work together and if they accidentally agree on a player then 50% of the cost comes from each of their budgets. On top of all that there are 3 media injunctions in place at present. One for rape, one for sexual assault and one for the spat between the owners. I don’t like our owners but fucking hell it’s another level at Chelsea.2 points
