Great Documentaries

Watched the Jeremy Bamber doc on Sky. I’m quite interested in this case both for his 30 year obsessive attempts to prove his innocence (even though in my opinion he’s clearly guilty) and more so for the internet amateur sleuths who have latched on to the case. The Bamber forums have 1000s of members, mainly (it seems) women crawling over every piece of evidence, sending him money and badgering the police and the courts with freedom of information requests.  Occasionally one of them will publicly change their mind, declare him guilty and the others will turn on them like hungry wolves picking on a wounded member of the pack. It’s a bizarre phenomenon.

The Last Mountain. Documentary about Tom Ballard who died climbing Nanga Parbat a mountain in the Himalayas. He was the son of Alison Hargreaves who was also killed 25 years earlier on her descent from the summit of K2.

It explores how his sister and father deal with the grief of losing 2 family members in such a cruel way. Although you certainly get an appreciation of just how dangerous these pursuits are and how obsessed and driven these people are to even attempt these things.

Beautiful documentary. Amazing scenery. Interesting. Emotional. Can’t recommend this highly enough. It was on the bbc so probably still on iPlayer.

Yeah I watched that and enjoyed it, fabulous scenery too. It did make me wonder if some of these people are maybe a little selfish/foolish in their pursuits, I'm probably being harsh.

Not harsh. I thought the same thing. It was fucking insane the risks involved. You could see his girlfriend still felt very angry about it and also how much he was influenced by the other fella he was climbing with. It was interesting how they mentioned once they are on the mountain it changes them psychologically and once they’re are up there in that rarefied atmosphere for prolonged periods some of the decisions they made were not particularly rational.

Good shout- watched this yesterday based on you recommending it. Felt sorry for the sister. Thought the Dad was very detached from it all- guess it was his way of processing it

I think the phrase you are fumbling for re the dad was ' a bit of a weirdo '. The grief of the sister was palpable and heartbreaking and I can't imagine the dad's attitude helped much.

I know lots of people think it is heroic but , particularly the mother , I find a lot of it mind-bogglingly selfish.

I thought the Mum was a bit selfish- she climbed one and then immediately set off on another more dangerous one

Florida Man

40 minute documentary film about the multitude of various losers, druggies, religious nutcases, bullshitters, alkies, homeless people, psychos and degenerates just casually strolling round the streets of Shitwater, Florida.

Utterly depressing, thank fuck I don't live there.

White towelling socks pulled all the way up signifies 1 of 2 possibilities:

1. Cunt, or

2. Tony Manero

Unsure of Tony's whereabouts though.

Just seen your man casanova. If he put porn on they'd jump through the screen and go for his neck. "This is off the record"

Blonde in the bar. Jesus that was grim. mad to watch, they all seem in good spirits but it's more of an acceptance for most of them and there aren't many better settings to be a down and out I guess.
