Going only from Saturday and the brief occasions he played last season i would say he is a player with loads of skill but needs to know when to and when not to use it. This would come with experience.

Cant see him getting anywhere near the first team this season so going out on loan would benefit him.

The problem many of our youngsters have got is that we have such a good and large squad now its going to be very hard to get into the team.

Players such as Spearing are trying to get into a team that consists of Gerrard, Alonso, Mascherano, Sissoko and Lucas all playing in there position. None of them are old either.

You have to be some unbelievable talent to get in now.

I wonder if Darby will be a it more prominent this season as we haven't sign a back-up RB. He's been impressive whenever I've seen him.

I would imagine Arbeloa is back up to Finnan. Rafa seems to be playing Peltier back there as well so who knows.

Is it possible Spearing could play right-back.

It is the only position I could see him getting and he does have the ability but forcing his way into the midfield is near impossible. Also his lack of hieght rules him out at centre-half.

When was the last time a youth player came through at one of the bigger clubs? And the time before that?

Warnock? But obviously he's moved on.

Richardson at United, when did he break through? Looks like he's going as wll though.

Hoyte at Arsenal, still there I think

Regarding Darby pleased to see him being taken with the squad. From the bits I've seen of him seems to be in the Finnan mode defensively, consistant, does the simple things well, doesn't take risks, but lacks the ability going forward. Considering Arbeloa's the only real right back cover, I'd hope to see Darby in a few of the 'lesser' games this season

Cashley at the Arse I reckon was the last proper good homegrown player to come through at one of the top four. We had Warnock and the Mancs Richardson and Fletcher who are only really squaddies.
