Yay or nay?

 

While frequenting Wongs all you can eat buffet in Moreton i will mostly be eating Salt and Pepper Chicken, chicken skewers, ribs, and Duck if its available.

 

You can keep your water chestnuts and spooky green antics though.

Mr Chows Eating House in Parkgate is my local chinky of choice. superb.

The Capital in Hamilton Square, Birkenhead also v good.

 

I find Chinese takeaways increasingly samey though - all sticky gloop - sweet n sour, lemon chicken etc and the salt and fat in them is horrendous. Made home made chicken noodle stir fry on Saturday which was far nicer, fresher and healthier than any chippy chicken chow mein.

 

And ASDA prawn crackers are better than you get in any takeaway imo.

I love my Chinese food. Shanghai Palace at the Pier Head is about a 5 minute walk from work, so that's the one I go to most of the time. Business lunch between 12 and 2pm is great value.

Spot on post from start to finish, the duck in Mr Chows is the stuff of legend - Asda prawn crackers also superb.

There are some chinese meals though that when you take the lid off the takeaway tray you just find yourself exclaiming out loud 'What the F*ck is that!'

If i stick to meat dishes I'm alright though.

If you ever find yourself in Edinburgh, I would strongly recommend Taste Good. It is Thai food, but you don't strike me as a stickler.

Crush up some Szechuan peppercorns and a few normal peppercorns a nd add a large pinch of coarse sea salt. Heat through in a dry wok until they begin to toast slightly and the salt turns a bit brown. Set the mixture aside. In the same wok, heat a little oil and stir fry some shell-on prawns for a few minutes until they are cooked through. Add the salt and pepper mixture and mix it through the cooked prawns so they're nicely coated, and serve with a cold beer. Talk about moreish.

I was ordering an Indian every week last month and had my first Chinese of the year the other night and it didn't do anything for me. Probably because I got a chop suey.. which I didn't realise was actually an American dish until afterwards. The best part of the meal was the prawn crackers I dipped in curry sauce.

Might order order a sweet and sour dish one day next week. Used to be against that kinda thing, but tried some of the girlfriend's and it was very tasty. Usually just get a beef or prawn chow mein and loads of sides and starters, but wanna branch out a bit.

Nothing beats the Golden Pheonix that used to be on Hanover St. Liverpool's first Chinese restaurant apparently. It's gone now. I also remember one in Chinatown called The Far East, is that still there? 

 

Actually, one does beat it. On Gerrard St in Soho there is one above the Chinese supermarket. It has no signs or anything but it's the best i've had I reckon.

I've never had authentic Chinese food, but I'm not a fan of the dated, 1970's, Anglicised stuff you get in most Chinese places in this country.
