Atilla the hun leader of the hunnic empire, also know as 'the scourge of god'

From Wikipedia....

'In much of Western Europe, he is remembered as the epitome of cruelty and rapacity'

Said it before but it has to be part of the US army occupying Italy from '44.

The Italians aren't exactly known for bravery & putting up heroic resistance which made it safer than anyother theatre of war whilst they are known for beautiful women & at that time they were willing to do almost anything for a minor part of your GI's ration pack.

Norman Lewis has some cracking stories on his time out there.....

The Praetorian Guard, Rome's elite bodyguard for the emperor, police force for the city itself, and king maker. Their power grew as the centuries progressed, and at one stage they took control of the city itself and sold it to the highest bidding senator. Although he himself was killed months later. The most capable warriors, with the best uniforms and the best pay.

I knew you'd be on this thread like a randy dog on a leg.

I'd join the Sioux army and fight under the command of the great warrior chief Sitting Bull which defeated Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Although this would inevitably mean certain death in the near future I have utmost respect for the North American Indians and how they fought against the persecution they suffered at the hands of the "white man."

There can't have been a better trained fighting force than the Spartans under Leonidas, particularly those who fought at Thermopylae. Their training routine was fucking brutal, as was their society. Babies thrown over cliffs if they weren't up to scratch, taken from parents at the age of seven and forced to fight often until death in mere training. They were encouraged to leave camp (as kids) at night and kill the local vagrants with their bare hands, as long as they didnt get caught! The 300 chosen to battle the Persians were pretty much the first 'special force' army ever.

Can't believe they've been overlooked here.

never heard of them.

besides, the question is 'which would you like to join', not which is the best.

you want to be orphaned from your family, grow up to kill babies and homeless people, that's your decision.

I'd have rather been a Spartan trained from the age of seven to have a glorious death than a regular English army solider being told to go over the top in the First World War.

There's something that appeals about fighting alongside the most highly trained force ever assembled at that time, so I'd definitely pick the Spartans.

Or a close second would be the Carthaginians under Hannibal, giving some shit back to the Romans who'd been dishing it out.
