Bernd Schuster On Borrowed Time?

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster's future will be decided in the coming days, with the smart money on a swift exit for the German tactician...

Before Real Madrid's visit to Valladolid, it was widely speculated that a poor result would spell the end of coach Bernd Schuster's spell in charge at the Bernabeu. Events following their 1-0 loss in La Liga have suggested that it is only a matter of time before the German starts packing his bags.

Fearing another disappointing result, Ramon Calderon, Predrag Mijatovic and Miguel Angel Portugal all travelled to the Nuevo Zorilla, so that they could analyse the action first hand. During the course of the 90 minutes, the expressions on their faces told a thousand words.

It is their actions (or lack thereof) after the match, however, that provide the clearest indication about Bernd Schuster's future. Mijatovic spent barely 45 seconds in the dressing room, while Calderon did not even bother, preferring instead to to use a rear exit and get into a car taking him directly to capital. Usually, the Madrid supremo makes a habit of visiting the sheds after every match.

It has been thought for some while now that Calderon was Bernd Schuster's only remaining supporter at the club, and with his patience having run out, the German appears to be out of options. As for potential replacements, the most obvious option is Miguel Angel Portugal himself. He has already indicated his willingness to take the reins to Calderon, and his campaign is boosted by his previous experience, having been manager of Racing Santander before Calderon recruited him as technical secretary.

Another option is Michel, the coach of the youth team. However, his lack of top-flight managerial experience is likely to hinder his chances. For Real Madrid, Roberto Mancini and Victor Fernandez are said to be attractive options, but they have not expressed any interest in the job. Juande Ramos has, but there has been no dialogue between the two camps.

A meeting on Monday will decide Schuster's fate, although the actual meeting appears to be a mere formality, given recent events. Calderon's "the manager who starts the season, finishes the season" policy is likely to be promptly discarded, spelling the end for Bernd Schuster at Real Madrid.

Cue a load of posts about how Real are a joke team, with shit directors who don't know how to run a football club, blah blah galacticos, no continuity, clueless, who would ever want to go there etc etc etc etc.

2000-1: Champions

2002-3: Champions

2006-7: Champions

2007-8: Champions

99-2000: CL winners

2001-2: CL winners

That's 6 of the biggest trophies in world club football in 8 years, so they're doing something right.

To be fair, they have a lot more leeway with mistakes in La Liga. Barcelona was definitely not on top form last season and it made the task fairly easy for Madrid with only Villareal as theorhetical challengers.

Serves them right. When they sacked De Bosque after he won the CL I realised what a shit club they are. And theyre still claiming those European cups they won in the 1950s against minnows.

Shit club.

Thats bullshit. We won a European cup angainst modengladbach who are struggling to stay in the bundesliga.Does that mean it shouldnt count?

They should keep him but they won't - they sacked Toshack a few years ago a season after they had broken their own goalscoring and points haul record. Del Bosque was sacked after winning virtually everything. Schuster has been doing so well that they could not justify sacking him but once he hits a bad patch he will be sacked due to the president or the fans getting on his case.

The president or another candidate for president will get the fickle fans to wank themselves silly saying that they'll get Ronaldo, Gerrard and Kaka and get a new manager so they will still maintain an interest. They'll get AS or Marca to invent shite stories about nicking other players for ridiculous money. They are like fickle women who want to spunk tons of cash changing their sofa or wallpaper every year just for the sake of it.

Hasn't everyone?

Yes, he's never mentioned anymore. The cannot poach any other manager if they sack him, as its against the rules in Spain to do it during the season. They will defiantly be linked with Rafa now. They wont sack their manager a week before Barcelona surely not.
