Arne Slot

Zoned out of all this new manager stuff but I read The Athletic article today. Apparently this fella is a big personality and players love him.

That’s half the battle won. You need a bit of that. Look at the league now. Klopp, Guardiola, Arteta. All dominant managers who transcend their clubs really.

Even Emery and that fat twat at Spurs. Cult of personality.

I said when the Mancs appointed Heisenberg that I would be wary of Dutch managers as they are very rooted to a specific way of playing and don't deviate from it. This is why Ten Hag has done most of his transfer business in the Eredivisie because he wants players who can immediately fit into his system and style of play, and he's even made a pigs ear of that. Hopefully the fella we're targeting is the exception to the rule.

Haven't read anything about his personality or man management, but I did read that his tactics are very similar to ours too (high press, similar formation, even plays an inverted right back), which makes him a more comfortable choice for me than Amorim would have been. We need the least amount of disruption as possible, just need someone to come in and get the best out of the players we have by making little tweaks here and there and freshening things up with a different voice.

I for one welcome our new bald Dutch overlord.

Ha! I used that exact expression, word for word, in the diary entry for yesterday. Mentioning this now so it doesn't look like I nicked it from you when I publish it!

I’m genuinely excited about Arne Slot. I know nothing about him, and that’s what I like. Maybe the next big thing, instead of some flavour of the week or a short term well known appointment. He’ll have a few years to try and succeed, and that’s good. We’re almost certainly going into a few ‘quiet’ years, so let’s give it a try.

I’m pleased

From what I’ve read he seems like he could be a good manager, but short of, perhaps, Alonso, I’m struggling to imagine anyone being able to keep us challenging on our budget. Expectations with have to be adjusted unless FSG are planning to spend at the very least Tottenham-level money.

If things stay as they are, we’ll have found another miracle worker if Slot has us hovering around 4th place most seasons.

I nicked it from the Simpsons, so don't expect any legal action!

Just put that through google's "JohnnyH bullshit translator" and it came out as

"I'm genuinely excited about Arne Slot. I know nothing about him but I know he's not Xabi Alonso and that's what I like"

I'm disappointed you didn't say he would Slot right in. That was an open goal, people have been negged for less.

The thing I like about going for someone who plays very similar football to Klopp is that we'll know fairly quickly if he's shit or not.

Someone coming in and wanting to change loads immediately has the safety net of "he needs time to implement his methods" whereas this fella, if he's any good, should really be able to hit the ground running relatively quickly as the players are familiar with what he wants to do and it's just minor tweaks.

Same.

It's an almost impossible task following Klopp, but of the names we've been linked with recently I think he's as good a bet as any.

The "Dutch connection" might help the likes of Gakpo and Gravenberch kick on a bit too.
