Liverpool have been pursuing a deal for Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak for over eight years, it has been revealed.

The Liverpool Echo says at 16, Oblak was one of the most highly-rated teenage goalkeepers in Europe, already establishing himself with Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana.

The Reds were seemingly interested in bringing Oblak on trial and had travelled to Merseyside to watch Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in December 2009.

But after picking up an injury, Oblak would return to his homeland, signing for Benfica the following summer in a £1.5million deal.

Liverpool are said to be lining up Oblak as a replacement for Simon Mignolet, who has opened the door to leaving Anfield this month.

Got to love this we do not buy without selling. A few weeks ago people were saying we would not buy this window. Then van Dijk came in and even though that was before Coutinho was sold and despite the club trying to keep him people still bang on about van Dijk being bought with the Coutinho money.

If we do spend this summer, the same people will say we're just spending the Salah money that'll come in the following summer.

Hi Southampton, scout Virgil still interested but short of cash? OK, £75m. Fine

Glad we went in early and got him cheap

And how much more would they have slapped on if we had the £146 million in the bank when we were negotiating... I never said he was cheap

Oblak.

That was the lead singer from Thin Lizzy wasn't it?

Taking my Jim Davidson hat off, just for a moment or two, I'd be genuinely surprised if we got this one over the line. I can see an intense period of monitoring and behind-the-scenes approaches being in vein when he eventually decides that England is cold and wet, having just lived in Spain and Portugal for the past 8 years.

Also interesting how he's 25 and still only has 18 caps for Slovenia. I think Handanovic is very capable, but christ.

Real Madrid will be all over him, and transfers between the two clubs DO happen, as we saw in the summer with Theo Hernandez.

If you look over the last few years, Atletico are a selling club, and have done big deals with the following, for the following. We aren't in that list, so one wonders if City and Chelsea are more likely to be preferred dealers for Oblak, but then both clubs have relatively young, relatively excellent keepers already.

City - Aguero, Demichellis,

United - De Gea

Chelsea - Costa, Luis

Inter - Forlan

Monaco - Falcao

Barca - Turan

Juventus - Mandzukic

Spurs - Alderweireld

China - Jackson Martinez

Real Madrid - Theo Hernandez

It's incredible to think that in 2010/11 they had a squad that featured these lot, and still only came 7th in La Liga:

---------------------De Gea--------------------

--Juanfran------Perea------Godin-----Felipe Luis

--------Simao---------Koke----------Tiago------

------------Aguero---Forlan---Costa-----------

I used to like Neil Warnock, as a pundit, when he was on the Championship equivalent of MOTD. So sue me.

Right, I'm just off the phone with my solicitor, and I'm reliably informed that I have no grounds upon which to bring legal action against you for your views on Warnock.

So, in lieu of a courtroom battle, I'll shout bollocks towards you, at a later unspecified date. Good day sir.

Difficult but far from impossible

Most big clubs have their keeper.

Real seem to want the young Spanish keeper Kepa whateverthefuck on a free.

They also seem intent or redoing the front line and paying 80ml for a keeper and that?

PSG maybe, but FFP issue with the Mbappe deal being set for this summer

Chelsea,Utd,City all have their keeper at the moment

No club in Italy or Germany can pay.

Doesn't leave him much to choose from IF he wants to go

70mln€ is the price for Aubameyang. Shall we be in for him? On one side, I think yes, on the other....

Still yes. 28 is not old.

It's not but when despite having excellent movement and technique it's his pace that lifts him up a notch. Ageing and with a questionable attitude I reckon Klopp has his eye on the next Aubameyang as the current one is on his way down.

100% . He would make us even more devastating.

I think Bobby would have the same impact as he does his best work from deep anyway.  However, I would start Bobby upfront in certain games regardless.

I think Aubamayeng, Oblak and a partner for Keita could lead us to the title.

A partner for VVD and Clyne sorting himself out would also be a help too!

I think we have spent enough money to be challenging for the league and to win things.

Given the spend by City, United and (slightly lesser extent) Chelsea, this is a ludicrous statement. Any contention we do have for trophies is over-achievement stemming from a world class manager. The net spend, relative to what’s around us, remains pitiful.

We are so close — as was Rafa, when his side was a David Silva-short of being imperious. Investment never arrived for Rafa: Several more top additions are needed for Klopp to avoid being ‘so far’
