Car leasing

Our car lease is due to end in a few months and I was wondering what experiences people have had with giving theirs back? Do you get shafted with deposits/damage etc?

It seems a bit confusing with regards what's classed as wear and tear and what's classed as damage too.

Are there any bodywork types who specialise in giving lease cars the once over for dinks and stuff before you take them back?

In general, they are more open-minded than you might think over wear and tear, because they know the car is susceptible to the same wear and tear as a privately owned vehicle of the same type/age/usage. However, if it looks like it's had more dings than a Hong Kong taxi, they could enforce some of the penalty clauses that are in the fine print.

Try the BVRLA website, they will offer guidance on fair wear & tear when returning a lease car. General rule is scratches over 25mm is re-chargeable as is any dents over 10mm in diameter, usually only 1 per panel is allowed. Damage or scratches to alloy wheels over 25mm is usually re-chargeable.

Any accident damage or broken lights is re-chargeable plus beware of potential recharge costs for missing spare keys, missing spare wheel/tools in the boot and the worse one is the lack of service history depending what your lease agreement entailed.

Check the vehicle in plenty of time before returning in case you need to make any repairs, it also helps if you give the car a good valet inside & out prior to returning.

Good luck.
