According to the Beeb, we've been given the most difficult draw out of the British clubs.

Liverpool face a tough tie in the third qualifying round of the Champions League as they have to overcome Toulouse to book a group stage spot.

Not sure if I agree, that said i don't know fuck all about Toulouse other than it's in the north of France and i went there as a kid.

Regarding Nick's point about resting players, I wish we could have played the home leg first - that way we could have stuffed them and sent out a weakened side for the second leg. If we get a 1-1 away from home or even a 1-0 win, Rafa would still play a strong side second time round.

V lucky to make 3rd place, with every result going there way on the last round of games - Lens managing to lose away to already relegated Troyes. Not a good team. Here is brief preview for anyone who's interested:

Toulouse

Ins: Riou, goalkeeper (Istres); Cherfa, defence (amateur); Constant, forward (amateur); Ilunga, defence (Saint-Etienne); Jönsson, defence (IF Elfsborg); Gignac, forward (Lorient); Mermillod, goalkeeper (StEtienne)

Outs: Pentecôte, forward (Bastia); Ayasse, midfield (Reims); Cherfa, defence (loan, Tours); Benvegnu, goalkeeper (Amiens); Robic, midfield (Tours); Bonnet, midfield (loan, Sedan); Aubey, defence (Lens); A. Camara (Rodez)

Elie Baup’s Toulouse side completed a remarkable season by securing a place in the Champion’s League qualifying stages this time around thanks to a great late season run. The draw of the Champion’s League has ensured that of their regular starters only Lucien Aubey has elected to leave but equally they have not strengthened their side a great deal. Jon Jonsson, a converted attacking midfield player, will fill Aubey’s role at the heart of the Toulouse defence after signing from Elfbourg in the summer while Illunga comes in from Saint-Etienne to provide further competition for a spot either at centre-half or at left-back, where he will likely feature. Rudy Riou will add depth to the goalkeeping position although he is unlikely to displace Douchez, who had a fine season last term. Defensively Toulouse have been strong in recent seasons, building around the experienced Arribage, who helped talk young prospect Daniel Congre through many games last season, bringing on his young counterpart considerably. The centre of the Toulouse side is very rigid and solid with Mathieu, Fabinho and Dieuze all likely to feature at the heart of the midfield. On the flanks Toulouse have players who thrive on the broken play that their defensively minded central players create; in Achille Emana there are few players better in the world carrying the ball forward against a retreating defence, although is strangely ineffective when the onus is on Toulouse to attack. The final midfield position is currently looking for a permanent incumbent with Battles, Bergougnoux and Mansare, who featured most often last season, all keen to feature regularly. The forward role will be occupied by Johan Elmander, who despite looking rather cumbersome and slow at times can provide moments of inspiration to turn a game. The Swedish international scored eleven goals last term and a similar tally this season would surely see Toulouse again in the top half of the table. Baup has increased his attacking options with the capture of Gignac from Lorient. The young forward will bring pace and goals to the side – he got nine last term. Tunisian international Santos will be hoping to make an impression in the squad this term after a disappointing couple of seasons.

Target: It is a near impossible ask for Baup to match his side’s achievements of last season. The fans will hope for another high top half finish but this could prove tough despite strengthening their side. With European and domestic competition to face next term there would be no real surprise if Toulouse finished around the mid-table mark.
