  1. Atletico look to lift themselves after derby loss...Ibanez (sp) (def) and Seitaridis fit...Rodriguez a doubt...coach Aguirre banned from touchline...Aguero might be rested...Ujfalusi also a doubt...changes possible... Atletico have suffered some set backs in their recent domestic games, the last being a heart-breaking injury time defeat to Real in the Madrid derby. They have done well in the Champions League so far though and any kind of positive result against Liverpool will leave them in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout stages. They may be a little unsettled by speculation suggesting a loss will get the manager the sack and, perhaps because of this, several strange line-ups have been practised in training. The coach will have to decide whether or not to go with what the team knows or if a gamble is worthwhile. Franco or Coupet will be in goals behind a defence likely to include Seitaridis, back from injury, Dominguez and possibly Lopez. Ujfalusi has a knock and is a doubt. Ibanez resumed full training earlier in the week so definitely should be considered as well. In the midfield Rodriguez is the main doubt and with plenty of cover for him this area is still strong. The changes here could see Simao, Camacho and Luis Garcia come in while Maniche will keep his spot. The attack is a lot stronger now Forlan is back and fit again but he still needs time to get back to match sharpness. Aguero and Sinama are also dangerous strikers and will cause problems for Liverpool if picked although star man Aguero could well be rested in view of his recent travels and the busy schedule ahead. The coach might, of course, revert to the tried and tested formation and has broke with tradition by only naming the squad later during the day of the game. He does have the backing of the fans though so perhaps a defeat here won't be as fatal as the press are trying to make out. Probable Starting 11 Gregory Coupet, Mariano Pernia, Georgios Seitaridis, Alvaro Dominguez, Antonio Lopez Guerrero, Maniche, Ignacio Camacho, Luis Garcia, Simao Sabrosa, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, Diego Forlan
  2. Olympique Marseille 4-5-1 Eric Gerets' side closing in on full strength with only Rodriguez (def) missing... Ben Arfa (key player) (att) named in the squad but is doubtful... Domestic form is strong but Liverpool will be a major test... Olympique Marseille will look to replicate the strong start they made to their Champions League campaign last season, when they defeated Liverpool at Anfield in matchday two. L’OM could not maintain such momentum and were crushed by the Reds on their return to the Stade Vélodrome. Eric Gerets will be hoping there will be no repeat as Marseille aim for a good start in what is sure to be a tricky group for them. The injury situation in the south of France is rather encouraging at present as Gerets’ side are likely to be shorn of only Julien Rodriguez due to physical problems and even he is closing in on a recovery. Concerns had been greatest over effervescent winger Hatem Ben Arfa, who has a persistent thigh problem, however, France’s Young Player of the Year is likely to be awarded with a starting berth against Liverpool. A knee problem could yet rule the youngster out, however, he is named in a 19 man pool. A 4-5-1 system is most likely from Marseille, who will ask the troublesome Mamadou Niang to play the lone striking role. A solid, powerful performer, Niang could well unlock the Liverpool defence. Supporting him from the opposite flank is likely to be the dynamic figure of Baky Koné, who missed a handful of chances to beat Bordeaux at the weekend as Marseille drew 1-1. Koné also gave Marseille the lead with an early strike. It is in the centre of midfield that Marseille will be hardest pushed to compete. M’Bami, Cana and Benoit Cheyrou, brother of ex-Liverpool man Bruno, are all likely to start in relatively introspective roles. Concerns have been raised over the defensive stability of Marseille, however, the combination of Zubar and Hilton at the heart of their defence has only leaked one goal while playing together. Taiwo will start as an aventurous left-back while Bonnart is likely to edge Englishman Tyrone Mears at right-back. In goal Steve Mandanda has excelled this term. Probable Starting 11: Steve Mandanda, Laurent Bonnart, Hilton, Ronald Zubar, Taye Taiwo, Benoit Cheyrou, Lorik Cana, Modeste Mbami, Bakari Kone, Hatem Ben Arfa, Mamadou Niang
  3. Houllier was matched at 7/2 on Betfair today. Makes more sense than Poyet... anyone heard anything about this?

  7. Internazionale 4-4-2 Inter have uphill struggle ahead...Materazzi (sp) (def) banned...several injured especially in defence...but Ibrahimovic (k) (att) will be vital...Chivu ® (def) in squad...Inter have been shaken badly recently with some poor results in Serie A cancelling their procession to the title and dragging them back into a championship battle. They also had high hopes for a run in the Champions League after disappointing in that competition recently but they are staring in the face of another early exit. They are 2-0 down from the first leg and have it all to do in this contest if they are to progress. Cesar will be in goals but in the defence Materazzi is banned while Samuel and Cordoba are injured with Chivu being doubtful. A back four of Zanetti, Burdisso, Chivu and Maicon is likely assuming the Romanian can shake off his shoulder injury. In the midfield it will be hoped Stankovic is fully fit as he will be vital while Cambiasso, Viera and Figo are also likely to start. Dacourt is out but Jimenez and Cesar Rodriguez will be in contention as well. In the attack Ibrahimovic and Cruz will be given the task to find the goals that are needed but if things do get desperate then having Suazo and Crespo on the bench is no bad thing. Inter will know they have a big challenge here but it is not beyond them and an early goal really would set everything up nicely for a dramatic tie. They will need to be careful at the back though as losing an away goal could be fatal. Suspended Marco Materazzi (def) Unavailable Ivan Ramiro Cordoba (def), Oliver Dacourt (mid), Walter Samuel (def) Doubtful Cristian Chivu (def) On the Bench Cesar Aperecido Rodriguez (mid), David Suazo (att), Dennis Esposito (def), Francesco Toldo (gk), Hernan Crespo (att), Luis Jimenez (mid), Nelson Rivas (def) Probable Starting 11 Soares Julio Cesar, Cristian Chivu, Douglas Maicon, Javier Zanetti, Nicolas Burdisso, Dejan Stankovic, Esteban Cambiasso, Patrick Viera, Luis Figo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Julio Ricardo Cruz Weather Rain 13 oC Referee Tom Henning Øvrebø (Norway)
  8. Internazionale 4-4-2 Inter are flying just now...Samuel (def) and Dacourt ( (mid) out...Figo (mid) probably on bench...Inter have been absolutely dominant in Serie A for the last couple of seasons but last year they suffered a major disappointment in the Champions League knock out stages. They went out on away goals to Valencia in the first knock out phase and they will be determined to do better this time around. However they face European Cup specialists Liverpool and they will have to be at their best to progress. Cesar will be in goal while Maicon could play at full back despite only returning for one game since injury. Samuel is still out so Cordoba and Materazzi will be in the centre of the defence with Chivu playing on the left. In the midfield Maniche, Stankovic, Cambiasso and Zanetti are most likely to start but others will be in contetion including Viera and Figo after suspension and injury problems respectively. In the forward line Ibrahimovic is the superstar but Cruz has also enjoyed a fantastic season and they are almost certain to be recalled to lead the attack together. This is a little tough on Suazo who scored twice at the weekend but he will understand the situation. Crespo will be the other attacking option on the bench. Inter are an exceptional side but they are Euro-underachievers. They will be hoping this is finally the year they put that right. Suspended ---- Unavailable Oliver Dacourt (mid), Walter Samuel (def) Doubtful Luis Figo (mid) On the Bench David Suazo (att), Francesco Toldo (gk), Hernan Crespo (att), Luis Figo (mid), Nicolas Burdisso (def), Patrick Viera ((mid), Scherrer Maxwell (def) Probable Starting 11 Soares Julio Cesar, Ivan Ramiro Cordoba, Douglas Maicon, Marco Materazzi, Cristian Chivu, Javier Zanetti, Esteban Cambiasso, Dejan Stankovic, Maniche, Julio Ricardo Cruz, Zlatan Ibrahimovic Player Transfers In Maniche (mid) (Atletico Madrid) Player Transfers Out Adriano (att) (Sao Paulo) Weather ---- oC Referee Frank De Bleeckere (BEL)
  9. I lifted the following from wikiquote, I thought they all had some relevance regarding a banner aimed toward rafa: Cuando el río suena, agua lleva. Translation: When the river makes noise, (is because) it's carrying water. Interpretations: Every rumour has probably a true part. Hombre prevenido vale por dos. Translation: The man who is aware is worth two men. Imposible solo existe en el mundo de los incapaces. Translation: Impossible only exists in the world of the incapables. Interpretation: Anything is possible if you put your mind toward it. I also found this one which has no relevance... I just thought it was funny: Dos tetas tiran más que dos carretas. Alt: Pelo de cuca jala más que un tractor. Translation: Two breasts pull more than two wagons. A woman's pubic hair pulls more than a tractor. Interpretation: The ability of women to get things in their favor due to their beauty and sexuality. Good luck
  10. V lucky to make 3rd place, with every result going there way on the last round of games - Lens managing to lose away to already relegated Troyes. Not a good team. Here is brief preview for anyone who's interested: Toulouse Ins: Riou, goalkeeper (Istres); Cherfa, defence (amateur); Constant, forward (amateur); Ilunga, defence (Saint-Etienne); Jönsson, defence (IF Elfsborg); Gignac, forward (Lorient); Mermillod, goalkeeper (StEtienne) Outs: Pentecôte, forward (Bastia); Ayasse, midfield (Reims); Cherfa, defence (loan, Tours); Benvegnu, goalkeeper (Amiens); Robic, midfield (Tours); Bonnet, midfield (loan, Sedan); Aubey, defence (Lens); A. Camara (Rodez) Elie Baup’s Toulouse side completed a remarkable season by securing a place in the Champion’s League qualifying stages this time around thanks to a great late season run. The draw of the Champion’s League has ensured that of their regular starters only Lucien Aubey has elected to leave but equally they have not strengthened their side a great deal. Jon Jonsson, a converted attacking midfield player, will fill Aubey’s role at the heart of the Toulouse defence after signing from Elfbourg in the summer while Illunga comes in from Saint-Etienne to provide further competition for a spot either at centre-half or at left-back, where he will likely feature. Rudy Riou will add depth to the goalkeeping position although he is unlikely to displace Douchez, who had a fine season last term. Defensively Toulouse have been strong in recent seasons, building around the experienced Arribage, who helped talk young prospect Daniel Congre through many games last season, bringing on his young counterpart considerably. The centre of the Toulouse side is very rigid and solid with Mathieu, Fabinho and Dieuze all likely to feature at the heart of the midfield. On the flanks Toulouse have players who thrive on the broken play that their defensively minded central players create; in Achille Emana there are few players better in the world carrying the ball forward against a retreating defence, although is strangely ineffective when the onus is on Toulouse to attack. The final midfield position is currently looking for a permanent incumbent with Battles, Bergougnoux and Mansare, who featured most often last season, all keen to feature regularly. The forward role will be occupied by Johan Elmander, who despite looking rather cumbersome and slow at times can provide moments of inspiration to turn a game. The Swedish international scored eleven goals last term and a similar tally this season would surely see Toulouse again in the top half of the table. Baup has increased his attacking options with the capture of Gignac from Lorient. The young forward will bring pace and goals to the side – he got nine last term. Tunisian international Santos will be hoping to make an impression in the squad this term after a disappointing couple of seasons. Target: It is a near impossible ask for Baup to match his side’s achievements of last season. The fans will hope for another high top half finish but this could prove tough despite strengthening their side. With European and domestic competition to face next term there would be no real surprise if Toulouse finished around the mid-table mark.
  11. The thing to keep at the forefront of your mind whenever discussing anything about talksport is that its the last chance saloon for sports radio presenting. Did you hear that Woman shortly after 6pm making the snide, sardonic remarks about each others blossoming radio careers? Presenter's consistently, habitually degrade themselves in a desperate (though effective) effort to generate a heated mass debate. It's not credible and any reasoning or logic to the opinion's expressed on the programme are non existent. The depressing thing is thats it clearly very popular despite the fact that hardly anyone on this forum can seriously listen to it for than a minute without questioning the purpose for living. In a nutshell Carra made the bloke (Adrian ?) look like a total buffoon and although Ive never met Jamie, he came across to most people on that show as a very decent, down to earth bloke that many others's on this forum confirm he is. The majority of criticism's came from London/South East England caller's, many of whom seem mentally paralysed by the whole "Come on Ingurland" nonsense. Thats no way to live your life.
  12. FC Barcelona 4-3-3 **** Messi ®(att) expected to return to first XI duty... Etoo (k)(att) fails to make the squad.. Thuram (sp)(def) may return to the squad... The reigning European champions are favourites for this tie, but after a defeat to Valencia, and the continuing absence of Etoo (k), problems abound for the Catalan side. After the good win over Racing Santander in the previous week, Barca seemed to have turned the corner, but Valencia's containing performance against a Barca team full of possession - but not that much else - will have lowered morale. The forward line may change in an attempt to add more of a cutting edge. Ronaldinho (k) did manage a goal on Sunday - he performed fairly well but his form has been up and down in recent weeks - and will of course start on the left, with Gudjonsen (sp) possibly in the middle ahead of Saviola ®, despite a disappointing match against Los Che. Messi ® has recovered, and indeed played a part as a substitute in La Liga, and will almost certainly start. At the back, things are suspect. Zambrotta ® holds himself responsible for one of the goals in the 2-1 defeat at Valencia but seems likely to line up. It was thought that Rijkaard may opt for Gio van Bronckhorst (sp) at left-back but this seems unlikely. Edmilson ® was taken off for Giuly ® in the defeat at Valencia but is like to start again as Rijkaard seeks stability. That said, Thuram (sp) - long since out with injury - has declared himself fit to play. A midfield of Xavi ®, Marquez ® and Deco ® will seek to balance attack with defence. Strangely, the experienced Barca side only narrowly escaped from the group stage. The away draw to Werder was courtesy of a last minute goal from Messi; had Barca lost that game, they may well have gone onto UEFA Cup football. That said, when playing as favourites at home, they tended to do well, winning two and drawing against Chelsea at Nou Camp, Chelsea similarly getting out of jail with a last minute equaliser. At home, Barca are formidable, regardless of the circumstances. 13. Liverpool 4-4-2 **** Gonzalez(sp)(mf) and Bellamy®(fw) both probably absent... Not many changes expected from weekend... Aurelio(sp)(df) could be fit... slight doubts over Gerrard(k)(mf) and Sissoko®(mf) in midfield... With all the ongoing fuss about Rafa Benitez’ rotation system, this game could be the one where he finally fields an identical team tow games in a row, for the first time in exactly 100 games. After the impressive return to form at the weekend against Aston Villa, in which Liverpol fielded close to a full-strength side, they have a couple of players who may be fit for the squad, but no problems with any of the players who started at the weekend. Craig Bellamy® and Mark Gonzalez(sp) both missed out through injury at the weekend but are thought to have a reasonable chance of coming back into the squad, and should have fitness tests on the morning of the game. Whether either would start is doubtful, but the option of their two quickest players on the bench would be a boon for Liverpool. Currently, neither player seems likely to recover in time. At the back, Dan Agger(sp) was fit at the weekend and will once again be on the bench here, he could even replace Sami Hyypia® if Benitez does go for rotation. Left-back Fabio Aurleio(sp) has recovered well since the weekend, and could find himself back inthe squad. In midfield, Luis Garcia® was the additional player on top of the three more central men who make up Liverpool’s first choice midfield, and they could keep him in the side after a goalscoring performance, whiel the Champions League has generally been where he puts in his best Liverpool performances. Jermaine Pennant® and Bolo Zenden(sp) are the two main alternatives, and Pennant was impressive in the League Cup this time last week. In central midfield, both Stephen gerrard(k) and Momo Sissoko® are carrying knocks which would not normally rule tehm out, but either one could still be rested. In goal, meanwhile, Jerzy Dudek(sp) will be available as cover on the bench, despite his domestic suspension keeping him out at the weekend. It's make or break time for Bordeaux in this season's competition. After defeats to PSV and Liverpool in the home leg of this fixture as well as a goalless draw with Galatasaray, Girondins need a remarkable turnaround in the final three games if they are to progress from Group C. the first encounter between these two sides a fortnight ago exposed a worrying lack of quality in Ricardo's side and they will probably need to rely on good fortune as much as anything else if they are to get a result at Anfield. Not only that but Bordeaux have been pretty poor on the road this term, winning just once domestically on their travels, and that was back in August. Their squad could also be in better shape going into this game. Joseph Enarkahire ® sat out at the weekend and will again be touch and go for this one, potentially joining Stephane Dalmat, Marc Planus and Vladimir Smicer, who again misses the opportunity to play against his former club, in the treatment room. Franck Jurietti has also been ruled out with a knee injury. Although Johan Micoud (k) appears to be fully fit once again after his injury troubles. Recent form has also seen a slight improvement for Girondins who knocked Auxerre out of the Coupe de la Ligue last week before disposing of Sedan with relative ease at the weekend. After two successful partnerships in a row then, Lillian Laslandes ® and Jean-Claude Darcheville ® could be the preferred strike pairing in what should be a 4-4-2. There will be nothing to gain from sitting back, so expect an attacking display from Ricardo's side as they look to score for the first time in this season's competition. A worrying stat works against them though as Bordeaux have never beaten English opposition in five previous encounters. However, coach Ricardo did once oversee a French victory over the Reds when manager of Paris Saint Germain in season 1996/97. 14. PSV Eindhoven 4-3-3 PSV enter the game at home against Liverpool FC with great confidence after recording an important 1-3 away win against Willem II. Willem II isn't the toughest opponent out there in the Holland Eredivisie but the champions have a poor record against this squad. The team began poor as Willem II opened the score but new signing Mendez had a great debut. The Ecuadorian international scored the equalizer and the 1-2. Farfan(k) finished the game off with a penalty kick. Coach Koeman had to make some changes because of the absence of key defender Alex. Koeman will again have to puzzle to form his side. Key player and captain of the team Cocu is suspended because of his red card in the last game against Olympique Lyon last year. John de Jong(sp) is the other player who will have to sit this one out because of his heavy injury. Koeman started with a 4-4-2 formation against Willem II but he will use the normal 4-3-3 for the Liverpool game. Alex(k) was ill last weekend but he will be back for this game. Salcido replaced Alex in the last game. Salcido will play at his normal left back position and Lamey will drop to the bench because of this decision. Kromkamp made his debut in the last game, he is expected to start at right back in this game against his old club. Cocu is suspended but PSV have a perfect replacement. Mendez impressed with his performance last Sunday and he will start on the midfield alongside Simons and Afellay. Culina is back in the team, because of the 4-3-3 formation, alongside Kone® and Farfan. New signing Kluivert(sp) wasn't fit enough to play in the Willem II game but Koeman announced that he is part of the squad on Tuesday and he could bring the striker later on in the game. Salcido played in the centre of the defense in the weekend game and Koeman could decide to use him as a centre back again. Lamey would play at left back if that happens but Koeman is expected to use his normal partnership Addo / Alex at the back. 15. Maccabi Haifa ***** (4-2-3-1) Israelis incensed that they're forced to play "home" game in Ukraine - Haifa take on Liverpool in the "home" leg of the tie at the Valery Lobanovsky stadium in Kiev, the neutral venue selected by Uefa, and the Israeli contingent are far from happy with this arrangement, believing that were it to be played on their own territory, they would progress in the competition. Coach Roni Levy, who has guided the club to three successive domestic League championships, watched his side produce a rousing performance at Anfield two weeks ago and indeed, the visitors were slightly unfortunate to lose 2-1 to a late Liverpool strike. Had Xavir Anderson's second-half header been just fractionally better aimed or had the Liverpool keeper not saved with his feet from Roberto Colauti in stoppage time, Haifa, a physical and pretty competent side, might well be favourites going into tonight's encounter. As it was, they caused consternation on Merseyside, exploiting slackness in Liverpool's ranks to take the lead, Gustavo Boccoli finding the net half an hour into the game. The Israeli League season has not yet started while ten squad members have this week been away on international duty. According to reports, neither side can depend on much by way of support, with the attendance not expected to exceed 3,000 in total, with an even split between locals and those travelling from Liverpool and Haifa. Suspended: ---- Unavailable: ---- Doubtful: ---- On the bench: Meshumar (def), Melicsohn (mid), Kanan (def), Hemed (att), Gazal (mid), Almadon (gk) Probable Starting 11: Davidovitch; Harazi, Keinan, Olarra, Magrashvili; Dirceo, Anderson; Masudi, Boccoli, Katan; Colautti. Liverpool *** (4-4-1-1) Key defenders Carragher and Riise absent through injury - skipper Gerrard's stomach upset expected to clear up -B] On Saturday, the opening game of the Premiership season away against top flight newcomers, Sheffield United, yielded just a point (1-1), and it was a match which Liverpool might have lost but for the award of a dubious penalty. Monday's trip to Kiev was fraught with disruptions - delays at either end of the journey, lost baggage, a misplaced passport (Peter Crouch) and in the case of the Chilean, Mark Gonzalez - scorer of the late winner in the first leg - problems with documentation. Steven Gerrard was suffering from an upset stomach which caused him to miss training, although the captain is expected to be fit to line up tonight. Meantime, during the obligatory pre-match press conference at the team hotel, coach Rafael Benitez was given a really rough ride by an irate Israeli media. The opposing coach, Levy, has cranked up the pressure, accusing Liverpool of having won the first leg through "dirty tactics" - and so it goes on. More worrying for the Premiership outfit as they go into what will be an awkward test, is the absence through injury of two key defenders in John Arne Riise and Jamie Carragher, both having collected injuries on Saturday. Danish youngster Daniel Agger is expected to replace Carragher at centre-back alongside Sami Hyypia while Fabio Aurelio should slot in at left-back. Meantime, the recently acquired Dutch striker, Dirk Kuyt, is ineligible while Harry Kewell is still out injured.
