It's not so much the Planning organisation (though it is deeply flawed), it's councilors and other elected members getting the casting vote on schemes at planning meetings.

Imagine training for seven years as a designer, and after years of experience, working collaboratively with a wide range of specialists for months on a scheme. Only to have it decided upon my a bunch of gossipping florists, soap-box tory boys (with a few eco-warriors thrown in the mix), all with no technical or design knowledge. It's genuinely like having your degree dissertation being marked by nervous but angry five year olds.

Absolutely one big reason why I quit the profession. So much happier teaching and working in film. Much more design freedom.

I've just stumbled across this article about some of the rejected designs for Sydney Opera House.

I like the one they chose.

https://www.arch2o.com/what-the-sydney-opera-house-could-have-looked-like-7-rejected-proposals/

Interesting. #3 was designed by a composer/ conductor who had a bit of clout with the judges and Aus government, so thought he'd 'have a go' at it:image.png

Jesus wept... it looks like a grain silo.

To be fair, I bet most most of these could gave been delivered close to the $3m budget. Whereas Utzon's ended up costing $104m.  Get what you pay for, eh?

Did you sort out your building regs drawings in the end?

I'm still waiting for planning permission to come through. I have found some online companies that claim to be able to do them quite cheaply if I give them the original architect plans to work from. I'm stuck really, cant move forward until the permission comes though. (5 weeks overdue on an 8 week process)

Be careful with these cheap online "plan drawing" companies. They may not carry insurance and they're unlikely to do anything other than provide you with drawings. Do you need advice on tendering, contract management and dealing with your builder?

Everything is delayed due to covid.  Most of the planning people at councils won’t go on site.

As above be careful with online firms.  Your builder will build to these drawings and any fuck ups on the drawings you’re likely to have little comeback.

By the sounds of it he just needs drawing for the builder and sign off etc   Probably for a single storey rear.

I understand about the delays and thats fair enough. The problem I have is that our planning officer doesnt answer or acknowledge calls to his mobile, landline or emails so we have no clue as to whats happening. The original plans were submitted in September last year and again, after loads of chasing, he told us what tweaks he wanted so we re-submitted based on them. We contacted the planning department to ask for an update and were told they have up to 10 working days to provide an answer.

You're right it is just a single storey extension with part oak beams and i need the regs plans for a building quote and sign off from building inspectors. Hopefully an online company can do it cheaply with a quick turnaround.

Yeah, I hear you.

I think we're ok with the builder side of things thanks, but I might ask to pick your brains if things change. Obviously if I draw water from the well, certainly you can present a bill for such a services, after all, we are not communists.
