Was genuinely thinking about Essien today and how phenomenal he was and how wasted that season(?) he played in defence was.

Would kill for him in his prime in our midfield.

The only player who genuinely challenged Gerrard for best midfielder in the league during his entire career.

Xavi

Matthaus

Essien (he was phenomenal those first few seasons)

Essien was decent but nowhere near this mate. Ballack was a better CM In my opinion.

I know he was more attacking than Essien.

For three seasons he was up there with the best in the world, almost made for Moureens powerball first incarnation at Chelsea, but with so much more in his locker.

The injuries mean he'll always come up in debates like this with the 'what could have been' suffix, sadly.

Seemed like a decent guy as well.

Honestly, those two together would have been one of the best midfield combinations the league's ever seen. Pre-cruciate Essien was an absolute force of nature.

Yeah, he absolutely was.
