Going through in such a manner might be the best outcome we could have hoped for in terms of the big picture. If we’d won 3-0 it may have only served to postpone the inevitable and buy Rodgers a little more time. This result and performance has surely hurt his hopes of convincing anybody that he’s turning this rig around, but at least we didn’t have to get knocked out for the damage to be done.

This was a league two side. LEAGUE FUCKING TWO. We scored one goal in 120 minutes of football against them. It’s not just a bad day at the office, this is a malaise that’s been going on for months. We don’t score more than one against anyone these days, and it doesn’t matter how shite they are. Bordeaux let in six in their last game for fucks sake.

If the Norwich performance was like a baby taking it’s first step unassisted, then this was the baby tripping over one of its toys and smacking his little head on the coffee table.

I wasn’t even surprised, I said on the podcast this was going to be a struggle because it always is when we face lower league opposition. Rodgers’ record against these sides since he came here is appalling, even when he fields his first choice line up (or something close to it).

Why is that? I’d say it’s because all of those sides play the same way. They pack the defence, play one up front and hope to frustrate us and nick something on the break or from a set-piece. It’s not like they’re doing anything extraordinary, it’s what lesser sides have been doing since the dawn of time. Every other Premier League club has to deal with it too, but Rodgers has never got to grips with it and it’s beginning to look like he never will.

Carlisle of the 4th Division have the worst defensive record in the country - yet we can only manage 1 goal against them in 120 mins at home.

If this had happened as a one off in the middle of a generally decent run, it could be shrugged off as one of those nights and results you see in the Cups.

On the back of the run and performances we have delivered since Man Utd at home last season (the best part of 20 games) it is conclusive proof that we are fucked and this is how bad we really are.

We need a fresh start, new ideas and a new man in charge - the manager has to go and go now.

"I reckon the owners know exactly what needs to be done but they’re holding off on doing it..."

That's tantamount to sabotage, isn't it?

No just plain incompetence and a a degree of arrogance from people that bought a business they thought they understood and now finding out they don't.

I attach no blame to Skrtel for the goal. Lovren stepped forward to deal with the player with the ball, so Skrtel tracked the runner into the box. When Skrtel looked back he saw that Lovren was in no man's land and the player with the ball had a free run on goal, so he had to leave the runner to an out-of-position Moreno and move across to block the player with the ball's route to goal. It was all on Lovren when he stepped out of the way.

The worst thing was the fact we had near enough a full side out and still got taken to pens. Even when Hodgson lost to Northampton it was purely a reserve team with players he didn't know much about.

United rested a few and beat a decent Championship side 3-0. Chelsea the same and won 4-1 away at the League One leaders. Southampton won 6-0 at a Championship side.

We've got a must win game on Saturday and don't feel we can beat a struggling League Two team without playing most of the first XI and still need pens.

The early cup games against this sort of opposition should be used to develop the likes of Ibe, Gomez and Rossiter, but Rodgers is in self-preservation mode now and will burn players out if he needs to.

Yep. That gif made it pretty fucking clear Lovren was responsible. Unless of course Skrtel is supposed to deal with several players at once.

Do Carlisle have the worst defensive record? The commentator said a few times that they're the country's top scorers. I've not bothered to check or verify either claim. It's Carlisle after all, and as already pointed out, they're in LEAGUE FUCKING TWO!

Yep, they've scored 17 and conceded 17 in the league. Best scoring record and joint worst defensive record.

Listening to the commentary last night reminded me of watching the late 60s team when a ponderous build up meant we were reduced to having potshots from outside the box. The difference with that team was they knew how to defend so one goal would be enough. This lot need to score 2 before they can even think of winning.
