I my opinion Alonso is our best defensive player because of the way he keeps posession of the ball and play the right passes to his team mates which makes it easier for them to keep the ball also combined with the fact he always makes himself availible for a pass to help out his team mates.

 

If you dont give away the ball going forward you hardly ever need to make last ditch tackles as the team as a unit will be in balance when the opposition attack and when this is the case your reading of the game is your most essential ability in the defensive game as you will posistion yourself in the right space at the right time and will not need to hurry into zones because you were out of position in the first place.

 

Alonso is the ultimate player to have in a zonal system as he covers his zone perfectly because of his reading of the game(vision and intelligence).

 

The defensive game is all about balance and covering zones and if you are able to master this the ability to tackle is almost just an luxury.

Even entertaining the thought of us signing Villa is just ridiculous, IMO. Real Madrid can't agree a fee with Valencia, which is around the £40M mark so how on earth are we going to afford him?!

 

I'd love for it to happen because he's a truly fantastic player but I don't see the point in getting our hopes up about something totally unrealistic.

 

I do think he'd come here above anywhere else though, if we had the money. But we don't.

Im badly skeptical about it happening but its not beyond the realms of possibility to think valencia would sell him cheaper abroad

Pepe's at it now. There's a load of adverts for Mahou lager on telly here at the moment, with players making bets with Casillas about what each has to do if Spain wins the Confederations Cup.

 

This one's brilliant. They're talking to Villa about various crap (what's the furthest south you've been, are you ready for penalties with Italy, etc) when he says that if they win, Pepe has to take him out for the beers in England this summer. Pepe suddenly pops up and says, "mate, no worries, and if you want beers for the whole season, I'll buy you beers if you're in our team." Tapping up on national telly: sweet.
