Thats the case for shit players but if Commolli thinks he can get boss players cheap in the summer he needs his head checking.

Suarez is a £20m player in January or June so pay up.

i dont think we should take too much heed to what the press report,or for that matter, what a selling club leaks to the press.

That's £25 million.

It is a lot, but probably the going rate - looking at what other teams are spending on the top players.

I remember when the club refused to pay over the odds for Simao and Alves, in hindsight I wish they did - as we got the cheaper Pennant instead. If Suarez helps us improve, then we'll all be happy, at the end of the day we are football fans, not accountants.

The only other teams paying that kind of money are City, Madrid, Chelsea and Barcelona. We are not them. We are paying a massive premium because we are so desperate to buy NOW. A consequence of H&G sucking money out of the transfer pot for years.

Suarez is simply not worth 10-15m euros more than Ozil, Robinho, Krasic, Huntelaar, Mascherano, etc

It is not a premium, it is the going rate.

Villa spent £24 million on Bent.

Suarez will only leave Ajax for a similar fee, as if they don't get it from Liverpool, they know other clubs will want him eventually, as he's a top talent - just look at his scoring stats.

I agree really, but it depends a lot on the player and the situation.

Robinho and Huntelaar both cost loads, flopped, and so then went more cheaply. Ozil's contract was running down, etc.

Ideally you want to try and pick up talented players at opportune moments. Sometimes though we will have to bite the bullet.

So the going rate for suarez is:

?

All the players you mentioned, either had problems with their clubs, wanted to leave or had low contracts. Not exactly similar examples.

But there are loads of examples of clubs paying big fees for players with similar ability to Suarez.

Oh well we clearly won't agree.

Yep, unless, there is a Crouch type option out there, seems we will just have to bend over.

I'm sure the club are aware of who else is likely to become available in the summer (those opportunities you refer to) and have taken that into account when deciding whether its worth paying this much over the odds.

Only Barcelona for David Villa and Man City will have spent more for a player.

More than £25 million?

Shevchenko, Berbatov and Rooney are three examples.

Ajax playing hard ball over Suarez by turning down new £17m bid

By Ian Herbert

Friday, 28 January 2011

Liverpool's attempts to sign Luis Suarez from Ajax hit another setback last night as a second bid for the striker, believed to value him at around €20m (£17m) was rejected by the Dutch side, who continue to insist they will not sell for anything less than €25m.

On a day when the club also encountered difficulties in their attempts to secure a loan deal for Aston Villa's Stephen Warnock – compounding what is proving to be a frustrating transfer window for them – the club had hoped that this €5m increase on their first bid for the Uruguyan might seal a landmark first signature for their manager Kenny Dalglish.

Suarez was in the stands in Amsterdam for Ajax's 4-1 win in a Dutch cup tie with NAC Breda. There had been some suggestions that he might not turn up, in protest at the club's refusal to negotiate down on price. But Liverpool appear now to have only 24 hours to match the asking price or proceed through the season without the 25-year-old. The Ajax board have set a deadline of tomorrow for the sale to take place.

It remains to be seen if Suarez will take his determination to leave for Liverpool as far he did to secure a move to the Amsterdam club, three years ago. The Dutch club Groningen were unwilling to release him to Ajax at that time, so he refused to appear for them and was released. Since last night's match was the final game of Suarez's suspension for biting Eindhoven player Otman Bakkal, he is eligible to play on Sunday, when Ajaz face Breda again in the league.

Meanwhile, problems in agreeing a deal satisfactory to Villa has thrown Warnock's arrival into doubt. If he doesn't arrive, then Dalglish may be forced to abandon thought of allowing Konchesky to leave for Fulham on another loan deal. Blackpool had received no new offer from Liverpool for Charlie Adam as of yesterday afternoon.
