Faith and Religion

Orthodox Jews hate bumming too though, that's the irony, they agree on more than they disagree on these people. They don't believe Jesus is the son of God, don't like gays, drinking, birds or bacon. Maybe that's why they're so highly strung.

I'm church of england and we eat mince pies, sing a couple of songs and put a tin of beans in a box for the foodbank. And do you see me beheading teachers or cluster bombing hospitals? I should say not.

Cardinal Becciu: Vatican court convicts former Pope adviser of financial crimes

In 2014, the Vatican spent more than €200m ($220m; £170m) acquiring a 45% stake in the building, which was planned to be converted into luxury apartments. By 2018, the Vatican's Secretariat of State had decided to buy the property outright, sinking a further €150m euros into the purchase. Allegedly signing off on the whole deal was Cardinal Becciu, who was at the time the Vatican's Substitute for General Affairs - in effect chief of staff to the Pope.

The money, part of which was intended to be used for charitable works, had been paid into a trust run by a London-based Italian financier Raffaele Mincione, who orchestrated the purchase. When the Secretariat later sought financial help from the Vatican's own bank, it sparked concern - and a raid by Vatican police that led to the charges against Becciu, Mincione, and eight others.

But the investigation into Becciu's affairs wasn't limited to the London property deal.

The cardinal was also accused of funnelling vast sums of money to his home diocese of Sardinia, some of which reportedly benefited his family. And it was alleged he paid almost €600,000 to another of the accused, Cecilia Marogna, to help free a nun kidnapped in Mali. Prosecutors said she instead spent much of the money on luxury goods and holidays. Marogna, who had offered her services to the Vatican as an intelligence expert, visited Becciu's residence on several occasions. Both denied claims of a sexual relationship.

I'd ban all faith schools personally, and religious education should only be taught as part of the history curriculum.

If you want to follow, or are already a follower or part of a particular faith, go for it but do it at home and at your particular temple of worship whatever that may be. If you want the kids to learn about it, put schools on at your temples on your day or days of worship.

Keep it out of day to day education.

This is likely to produce a better educated society who wont fall for lies and brainwashing about cloud sitters and wouldn't let politicians get away with the lies they do and using religion as those lies. This wont happen.

Christopher Saunders: former Bishop of Broome charged with rape in Australia

Australian bishop Christopher Saunders has been charged with rape and a string of historical sex offences - some against children.

The 74-year-old was arrested in Broome on Wednesday, after parallel investigations ordered by Western Australian police and the Pope.

Mr Saunders, who has denied allegations in the past, was refused bail and will appear in court on Thursday.

He is one of the most senior Catholics to face charges of this nature.

Mr Saunders is accused of two counts of rape, 14 counts of unlawful and indecent assault, and three counts of indecently dealing with a child as a person in authority.

The alleged offending occurred in the remote Western Australian towns of Broome, Kununurra and the Aboriginal community of Kalumburu between 2008 and 2014.

Aside from the late Cardinal George Pell, who was jailed and then acquitted, Mr Saunders is the most senior Catholic official in the country to be charged with child sex offences.

In a statement on Thursday, The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference promised to cooperate with police, and said the charges against Mr Saunders were "very serious and deeply distressing, especially for those making those allegations".

"It is right and proper, and indeed necessary, that all such allegations be thoroughly investigated," Perth Archbishop Timothy Costelloe said.

First ordained in 1976, Mr Saunders has spent most of his career in the remote Kimberley region in the nation's north-west corner, and was appointed Bishop of Broome in 1996.

The diocese stretches about 770,000 sq km (297,000 sq miles) - an area roughly the size of Turkey - and encompasses some of the most remote parts of the country.

Well known for socialising, his advocacy work, and escorting young men on camping and fishing trips, Mr Saunders has long been a powerful figure within the local community. He even has a beer named after him.

For years, he has faced dual investigations over allegations of sexual abuse made by several Aboriginal men from communities in his area.

The accusations were first aired in 2020, but the initial police investigation that followed was closed without charge.

He voluntarily stood down as the Bishop of Broome in 2020, but remains an emeritus bishop.

However after a historic inquiry was ordered by the Pope - and its 200-page report subsequently leaked to media last year - police began a new investigation.

Only a handful of Vos Estis Lux Mundi inquiries have been undertaken around the world. Meaning "You Are the Light of the World" in Latin, Vos Estis investigations are commissioned by the pontiff and were introduced in 2019 to combat sexual abuse and take action against bishops and other high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church.

Only the Pope can appoint or defrock a bishop.

Australia has faced a reckoning on the issue of child sex abuse in recent years, after a landmark national inquiry in 2017 found many institutions including the Catholic Church had failed vicims.

Sadly there’s a venn diagram of middle class, Daily Mail reading,  out of touch goons and EDL knuckledraggers who use Christianity as a convenient foil to their covert hostility to those ‘threatening our values’.

The type who only step in to churches for christenings, wedding and funerals only, yet cling to ‘Christian values’ desperately as it gives them a chance to ‘other’ other people and reinforce their, unwarranted, sense of superiority and ownership of Blighty.

He was blowing a whistle a significant amount of people could hear, that most of us missed.

Well gee, for starters, I guess we should stop giving religion such deferential treatment. One way of encouraging that attiutde in people is to post examples of religious folk behaving like bigoted little twats.

I'm not a fan of any of them. Not that they're all equally damaging. For instance, I don't think we have much to fear from the Baha'i.

Had a quick look at them-something about emerging as a sect of Islam? Now a separate strand.
