Best Stephen King Book

I am halfway through the stand but as much as I am enjoying it, it's soo long.

 

Are all Kings books like this?

No, They're not all that long by any means. I'd suggest Pet Sematary, Salem's Lot, The Shining or Different Seasons next for a more reasonable sized novel.

Nope, but I think The Stand just skips by. Easily my favourite King book, once again though, it's only blighted by a sub-par ending. Such a shame that, but a fantastic book nevertheless.

It is almost as long as The Stand. Fantastic book though, superb.

 

It and the four I mentioned are the ones I'd read next if I were you. All great books, Pet Sematary is probably the weakest of the five, but I'd say the scariest.

Have finally finished The Stand, excellent story and I didn't find the ending "That bad".

 

Bit the bullet and bought, It.

 

Would love them to make a improved mini series of The Stand as the old one sounds dreadful.

One of my favourite authors (along with Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker - seriously, if you've not read the Books of Blood, Weaveworld or Imajica... plus he's a Liverpudlian!).

 

Don't particularly like his earlier, horror stuff, but Bag of Bones, Dolores Claiborne, Rose Madder, Duma Key - just fantastic. He'll never be considered literature but he's a massive cut above the airport novel brigade (Grisham, et al).

 

Books I - IV of the Dark Tower sequence are just fantastic. Wizard and Glass probably my favourite.

 

Have a paperback copy of The Stand I must have read 10 times. The miniseries wasn't the best, but the soundtrack (WG Snuffy Walden, RIP) is pure magic.

I loved the tommyknockers book. Apart from the end which is the same for every single Stephen king book I've read.

Anyone read the new King; Mr Mercedes? I've got it on my to do list soon. It's a non supernatural thriller and has got some really good reviews.

I've read Mr. Mercedes, it's a good book, not one of his absolute best but definitely worth a read.

I'd have The Shining or even Hearts in Atlantis in for Salem's Lot in my top three.

 

I read Revival and Mr Mercedes recently enough and didn't enjoy the experience anywhere as much as with previous books. Don't know if that's an age thing on my part or something else.

Hearts in Atlantis doesn't even come into it, for me. Much as I like The Shining I think Salem's Lot is much better. It's depiction of small town life is superb and it's scarier. And not because of the vampires. It's the Marsten house.
