To be honest even at his prime I had no time for Gerrard. I remember in the run up to the last group game in 2005 champions league he came out with comments that if Liverpool didn't qualify he would have to look elsewhere. His shameless flirting with Chelsea in 2004 and 2005 didn't help either.

The time to leave was five years ago. Now it'd be like Owen getting a medal for spending much of the time on the bench. If he went abroad to Madrid it'll be empty even with success: he's not the sharpest tool in the box - he won't be conversant with most of his teammates after winning a title, and the fans won't even know what to think of him. He may as well buy a medal off ebay and stay here.

I think he needs help that all.Carried the club far far too long and the pressure that goes with it,get a couple of quality players too play with him and hell be great again

If he wants a change, and it could well be a good thing for him personaly then he should be allowed to leave with everyone best wishes.Cant believe some of the shit written about him.Go back and watch the 07 final

If he wants a truly meaningful and emotionally rewarding triumph elsewhere, he's missed the boat. As I said, that sailed a few years ago. What's two or three years at some Harlem Globetrotters' club? Is that SO great? Maybe shallow is the new deep.

Couldn't blame him if he wanted a new challenge abroad. Hope he stays, as he is a great player. But if we get decent money (and allowed to spend it) OR if we can do a reasonable swap, it might not be all bad.

I think Stevie has been showing slight signs of being on the wane. His swashbuckling style needs lots of energy, and he has been looking slightly leggy (by his own standards) to me.

At Madrid? Would that really be a challenge? He'd be part of a squad that ought to win most things even if he wasn't there. Where's the challenge - being able to pronounce the names of the titles?

Fair play to someone speaking their own mind and not following the sheeps.

I hope he stays more than anything this summer, I also think he will now Rafa has gone.

Play him centre midfield through out the season and he'll be our best player.

Oh and I will blame him if he goes. We are in shit and need players like him - local lads, who support the club, to step up, rather than leave when the going gets tough.

He said if he left who would he have to show his trophies to, that fact stills remains.

He's still our best player and we need him fit and firing next season to help us get into the top four.

Gerrard staying would also play a big part in Torres giving us at least one more season. Nice set of straws to clutch on to here:

The little boy who met Torres

When Rameez Mahomed entered the McDonald's player escort programme, he didn't realise it would lead to his meeting his soccer hero, Fernando Torres.

The little boy from Johannesburg was one of 23 children who escorted the Spanish and Honduras players on to Ellis Park on Monday.

Cameras trained on Torres captured the Spanish talisman as he struck up a conversation with Rameez, 10. The two were pictured conversing animatedly from inside the tunnel.

Rameez said holding Torres's hand was something he had been hoping for ever since he was told he would be an escort, but he never dreamt it would happen.

"The players came out and they were all mixed up. I was standing third in the line and I was supposed to be holding Sergio Ramos's hand. Then I felt someone grab my hand and I looked up and it was Torres."

Rameez says the Spanish striker initiated the conversation by asking him his name and from there they continued talking about a range of topics, including Torres's nickname, his boots and Rameez's soccer knowledge and traded questions about each other's hairstyles.

The Grade 4 pupil at King Edward V Preparatory School, said he began to "have a feeling" that he would be the one to hold the hand of the iconic player.

"While we were on the bus I started to feel nervous. I thought, my dream is going to come true."

A fan of English premiership side Liverpool as well as Spain, Rameez said he took the opportunity to ask Torres a burning question - would he leave Liverpool for Manchester City next season?

"He told me he would never go to Manchester City because his heart was with Liverpool and also because he gets along well with Steven Gerrard."

Rameez's mother, Sabera, said she was stunned to see her son walking out with Torres. "He idolises Torres. As a mother, to see that, it was really an overwhelming moment. My hands were shaking so badly you can see it on the video I took," she said.

The little boy said he wasn't at all nervous. "I wasn't nervous, I was just excited to be holding the hand of one of the best players in the world and not only the best, but my favourite as well."

He's a magnificent player and I hope he stays. If anything good comes out of that shocker, however, it will be (a) Istanbul was 5 years ago and he can't do that kind of performance anymore. No shame there, but he has to think more and husband his energies with more care. His discipline was non-existent at times, he played some silly 'Hollywood balls' and he didn't use his BRAIN enough. (b) He's a poor captain - an inspirational player, but a poor captain. At this stage in his career he needs to be left to concentrate on his own game.

I mentioned the samething in an other thread, like sammi did for Gerrard he passed the arm band onto him .,Sammi's form picked up (he concentrated on his own game ) personally i'd hand it to Pepe Riena let Gerrard concentrate on his own game sadly i think if that happened Gerrard would leave

I hope he stays but fully prepared for his exit. He has done more than enough for this club and deserves whatever chances he can get. A great servant to the club.

You are so blinded by your own ignorance, wake up and smell the coffee will you FFS. Liverpool fC, Gerrard’s hometown club, made him what he is today. They invested a small fortune on his football education, he was nurtured by the coaching staff and is being paid in excess of £100k per week for his services so don’t give us that great servant to the club bollocks.

Being captain of Liverpool FC would be enough for me even if I never won a carrot. There is no bigger honour than captaining your hometown club, being paid to do it is a bonus. Being paid in excess of £100k a week to do it is obscene. Ask Alan Shearer how it felt to be captain of Newcastle when he could have picked his own team and bagged a drawer full of winners medals? He is now a legend forever more in Newcastle as Gerrard would be in Liverpool if he played out his career here!

Get a grip!

Legs have gone. Shit captain. Can't control a game. Needs the team built around him. Never won the league with him( see, he's so crap/ a bad influence that he's held back the likes of Cheyrou and Diouf from leading us to glory). Always sulking. Playing to get the manager the sack. Best friends with Bascombe. Fat. Thinks he's bigger than the club.

Have I missed any?

I trust this is a wind-up? Am I about to get 'whooshed'?

Definitely agree with the gist of that.

I don't think he owes us anything, nor does the club owe him anything. If, for his own footballing reasons, curiosities, he wants to experience football in a different country, i think that's fine.

Gerrard will go down as a legend, but even more so if he stayed to fight it out through tough times, to make this transition period between owners and manager smoother for the club. I'd be disappointed if he left in search of his own titles, he's won enough for a career. It's all up to whether he plays for Liverpool FC, or he plays for Steven Gerrard. It would be disappointing if he left for Madrid, and don't give me the excuses of a league title, cause it's a Spanish League, means little to me, can't imagine it means much to him, furthermore if his exit started an exodus then people will hold him responsible for the inevitable decline.

However, having said all that, considering he put in a transfer request after winning the European Cup in the most spectacular fashion, I wouldn't be surprised if he's off. As long as we get the right price i.e. £30 million for him. If he hands in a transfer request to drive the price down to facilitate the move, that's something I couldn't forgive.

I get the feeling a lot of our fans want him to leave. Bizarre, if true.

I get that impression as well. I want him to stay but the only reason I would want him to leave is to play at the highest level he possibly can for the last few years of his career.

I mean, he has propped up some of the dross we have had over the past few years so does he stay and watch us go into another rebuilding process with the likes of Degen, Riera, Babel with no guarantee of CL football or go to Madrid playing for one of the top two managers in world football, nice weather, great stadium, Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi etc etc.

Bit of a no brainer really I would say if I was him but I hope he does stay.

It's not as black and white as that though. The money will go to the banks, other players will leave and the club will burn. Many will hold him responsible, would be alright with that?? In normal circumstances I'd be fine, take the £30 million and re-build with a young team, new manager. But we're a house of cards right now

I hope he stays with us until he hangs up his boots to be honest, He's been one of the greatest players to play for our club and I'm just glad he played when I was around to watch him. Yeah, he's pissed me off at times with the Chelsae stuff but he's dragged us through some tough times on the pitch. Like I say, I'm glad I was around to watch him.

I don't think he wants to leave. I just can't see him settling somewhere like Spain or Italy, he doesn't strike me as somebody who would relish that particular challenge.

If he did go, there couldn't be a worse time as the new manger won't even get the transfer fee to re-invest in new players.

I don't think anybody really wants him to go either, but I can see why some people would have questions over his commitment given some of his displays last season.
