Roberto Firmino

Why bring up a game from two years ago when the whole team collectively shit the bed? That's just odd and reeks of agenda.

To be fair, I was never a fan of false nines, and always preferred proper centre forwards in the Torres/Drogba mould. But Bobby is doing everything a centre forward should do and more. Not content with holding the ball up, he's flicking around the corner for our two human acme rockets to run onto.

Even with Salah's ongoing Messi impersonation, I think he's the first name on the team sheet these days and Klopp has said as much multiple times.

Spain starting Cesc as a number 9 when they had Torres on the bench was the nadir.

His fucking numbers? Jesus Christ, it's like talking to Rain Man.

False nine is his best position, he's in the form of his life and has scored 21 goals this season. He's the focal point of an attack that has scored 103 goals by March.

Please stop with this 'traditional centre forward' agenda. Not only is it mind numbingly boring to read about on a daily basis, it completely misses the point about how the team is set up.

The term 'traditional centre forward' has now changed a lot in the modern game. For instance both Aguero and Lewandowski are probably both described as 'traditional' but that does a massive disservice to how involved they are in build up play and even winning the ball back for their own team. Can Firmino improve? Most definitely, and you'd like to guess he thinks the same way too. I suppose that the beauty of our own front three is that they are interchangeable and could do jobs in a number of roles within the team. Firmino has improved so much that he cannot be labelled as he's capable of playing superbly as the central striker or even as a withdrawn one. At some stage Klopp will move him around or he will leave so let's just enjoy his performances while we can.

Why do people get hung up on terms. I do not get it. He can be called a ball playing nutcracker back o the net regular for all I care. He is scoring regularly. Embrace it.

No. But we obviously need options in there. Anybody who thinks he can play every game without either losing form or getting injured is a very silly boy.

I was merely amusing myself with the 'plan B' bollocks we had for years, first under Rafa and so on. Which basically translated into 'big bloke we can twat it to'. Which this season was 'top class specialist striker'.

Bobby is ace. Aguero apart probably the best striker in the league at the moment and arguably has been for the past two seasons. But, because people don't want to be proven wrong - they just repeat ad infinitum.

Mo Salah may have something to say about that but those three are the top three.

Good point, don't see why playing to the right of a front three is different to playing central of a front three!

I just can’t see how having Bobby is better than having Bobby and another top player. Perhaps I’m just not as enlightened as these other lads.

Is the other top player going to be happy sitting on the bench most of the time, mate? In an ideal world it would be nice, I just have some doubts.

No player plays all games, and there’s no reason some games they can’t play together. If anybody in the front three goes down, for a long time, things change. I’d be looking for two new players in there, to be honest. I’d certainly want one to be versatile. Both Bobby and Mo are both versatile.

You are, but playing the wounded teenager doesn't suit :)

But, adding in top class support so that 3 becomes 4, is not the same as 'replace'. Which was the main thrust of criticism towards Bobby up until January - despite the evidence people refused to believe he was good enough to lead the line. He is. And has proven he is.

This thread is a progression from - not good enough, it should be Sturridge, to he isn't good enough we need a top class striker, to the current position of top class striker and he can play behind, or top class support.

Very few big enough to say - 'proved me wrong'! Just lots of shifting the argument to a broad 'squad/depth' argument, which goes for any position in the team.

Jockey, as somebody who talked him up before he came, defended him against criticism, and somebody who loves the guy, I’m not one of them. I do think we need to do something against teams that park the bus, and putting Bobby as a ten and having a quality striker in there will certainly help.

Yeah, they only won the final of the Euros 4-0 with that tactic. Would've been 10-0 with a proper 9, like.

After years of signing crap people are now arguing against having more good players?

What if bringing in another top forward so we have more options spurs Bobby on to be even greater?

Yeah, players always get better with less playing time or when they are taken out of a position they are doing really well in.

Well let’s fuck the rest of the entire squad off then and only have 11 contracted players.

Twat.

Hold your horses, nobody is arguing against signing good players. More arguing whether a top striker would come here to sit on the bench in all the important games or be happy acting as cover for injuries? We’ve got a front three that is as good as anyone in the world, and a settled formation that is producing scintillating performances on a regular basis. If we were accommodating *insert top striker*, would that upset the balance?

I don’t think anybody would argue against the need for another top, versatile forward player - but I don’t think we need an out and out striker to cover Bobby. I’d rather go for a shit hot prospect or try and develop Ings/Solanke.

If Klopp is of a different opinion and he does see the need for top class cover then I’m not going to be complaining. I’m happy either way.
