Anyone got a fish tank?

Just got a 90 litre tank and after I have left it a week or so to get up and running, I was wondering what are the best fish to put in it. My birds dad is giving us two fat headed goldfish (Definitely not the correct name!) but what fish go well with other fish but look good?

I had a little tank when I was about 10. Would love to get a big tank now but don't have enough space.

I always had a Loach in the tank though:

They are supposedly very good at keeping the tanks clean as they hoover up bits of food.

Pretty hardy too. One of mine managed to escape from the tank and I found him 3 feet from where the tank was, he must have been out of the water for about 20 minutes before I found him, yet he survived.

The Japanese also cook Loaches in Sake, though I've never tried one...

If you are keeping gold fish I wouldnt bother with too many other fish, as they'll keep growing until they 'fill' (not literally) the tank. Get some bottom feeder like loaches to help keep the tank clean.

If, however, you have a heater in there, sack the goldfish off, buy a few catfish, 2 or 3 male guppies, and about 5/6 female guppies, and you'll never have to worry about buying fish again - after 2-3 months your tank will be full of guppies (only grow to about 5cm max)

If the is water heated plattys are hardy and good fish to get a tank up and running.

Ive been keeping tropical fish for past 4 years now turned into a hobby for me.

90 litres is too small for goldfish as already said and they are very messy aswell..

Have you cycled the tank yet?? Leaving a tank for a week does nothing, it has to be cycled first to build the friendly bacteria in the filter to break down ammonia produced from fish waste which is poisonous into less harmless nitrate/nitrite which is removed when you change the water each week.

Most common method of doing this is by getting a few hardy fish such as platys say about 3 for your tank and then changing about 20 litres of water a week, if you have a tropical fish shop near you then ask them if they could supply you with some used filter media from their tanks and put it in your own filter to quicken the process up.

As for fish, your best of sticking with small corydorus catfish or dwarf loaches, and a few tetras or rasboras for mid water, make sure you know what yuo buying and that they dont grow to big for you tank do some research first.

Buy yourself a ammonia test kit and keep checking it every day, when the tank has cycled the ammonia levels will start dropping whcih shows the bacteria in the filter is doing its job. Do a large water change when this happens and then you should be ready for more fish the next day.. Took my first tank about 3 weeks to cycle from scratch.

Do everything gradually dont go and buy too many fish all at once. And don't overstock the tank.
