The runway at St Maarten airport

I'm sure most people have seen the pictures:

 

 

I always thought they looked a bit fake and didn't believe it would be possible. But videos on youtube suggest otherwise:

There's a few on there but this one looks about as close as you can get without landing too soon.

 

Crazy. There isn't really much room to maneuver, which is bad enough for smallish planes but jumbos land here aswell.

It is fucking mental, on take off the aircraft have to make a steep right hand climb to avoid a mountain.

 

I flew there with Air France 2 years ago and it was a fuckin' ace holiday. That picture of the A340 landing is taken from a beach bar which is 5 minutes from the airport (check your bags in and go and get pissed kids). People hang onto the chain fence on the right when a jet is taking off and literally get lifted off their feet.

 

In summary; St Maarten rocks.

You must have shit it being that close to water on the approach, I hate landing at San Francisco from the south as it looks like you'll end up in the bay but it's nothing like that video and picture.
