Anfield Legends.

As I am a slightly younger generation red, have I made this up, or is there any grains of truth in it? Keegan was a legend when he played for us, granted, but when he left to go to Hamburg, did he leave under the not very best of circumstances? As a result, is he not held in the same esteem as some of other ex-players?

Cheers.

Everyone was upset when he left at the height of his career to go "downmarket" and quite a few felt betrayed as in those days there was a far greater expectation that players would stay with a club for most if not all of their career. But most Reds I knew reluctantly took the adult view that the move was clearly something he felt he had to do and were prepared to "forgive" him (especially as he was not joining a home rival and had been completely open about his ambitions).

I would be surprised if there was any lingering resentment and if there is any lack of esteem I would put it down to his managerial career rather than the Hamburg move.

Keegan ( or tiny tears as he's now known ) was a wonderful, dynamic and exciting player for Liverpool.

But every Reds fan should say a silent 'thank you' every day for his decision to chase the deutschmarks. For had he not left, we may not have been blessed with 'the King'.

Take the superlatives listed above and quadruple them and you're merely getting close to the importance of Kenny Dalglish in the history of our club.

In retrospect, the grudge held against Keegan because he left for HSV was petty. He was one of the key ingredients that put us on the map. By far the best signing by Shank.

Part of the Dalglish legend was because he filled a huge boot and he didn't disappoint. We kept on winning so no one missed the one who left. Strange that somehow bitterness and resentment lingered in some corner.
