THEY’VE spent three decades cooped up in tiny cages, starved of natural light and subjected to gruesome experiments.

 

So it’s hardly surprising these *laboratory chimps look a little excited as they get their first taste of freedom since being cruelly snatched from the jungles where they belong.

 

They hug each other as they emerge blinking from their lonely, miserable existence in the darkness into a new £3million sanctuary.

 

These heart-warming images mark the end of a 14-year battle to free the 38 chimps from a lab in Vienna by 59-year-old conservationist Michael Aufhauser. The animals had been used in HIV and hepatitis tests.

 

 

Michael warned the primates could still be emotionally damaged after their ordeal. He said: “Who knows what scars they carry on the inside.

 

“They are all traumatised to greater or lesser degrees. Two died before the reserve was finished, but at least those that are left will have a quality of life that was unthinkable when they were prisoners of the lab.

 

“Some chimpanzees were infected with HIV. But none of them, not here in Austria or anywhere in the world, *developed full-blown Aids. Therefore, the programme was useless. It achieved absolutely nothing.”

 

Some of the chimps were born in the lab so have never known sunlight.

 

The only times they were taken out of their cages was when they were sedated for another experiment.

 

Scientists stopped HIV testing in 1997, but the chimps were still kept locked up. US drugs giant Baxter took over the lab and halted all tests on chimps.

 

A lack of cash meant the sanctuary on the edge of Vienna took longer to build than was hoped.

 

Now they are finally free. The moment was filmed and has become an internet sensation.

 

The use of chimps for medical tests has dwindled in favour of more ethical trials. But tens of thousands are still used in drug tests around the globe.

I hand on heart believe the amount of individuals striving to do good each day far, far outweighs those cunts who for some reason want to inflict misery, suffering and pain on others. All that said, the above by Anubis is so true. As sad as it makes me, those pics and vids were no great surprise unfortunately. I was made up for the chimps in the end though, they looked so happy together.

About time Fucking sick how animals are treated just because they are animals. They are still living things. Some twars of people about. Using them for experiments etc put yourselves through the shit you tests.
