I'm not sure where it's originally come from but it's taken from the offal's media watch page.

Apparently we're after Patrick Viera. If true, it must put more question marks over Mascherano's position.

REDS FAVOURITES FOR FRENCH INTERNATIONAL

Rafa Benitez is reported to be lining up a shock move for French star and former Premier League favourite Patrick Vieira.

The former Arsenal midfielder is struggling to hold down a place in the Inter Milan first team, which led to the rangy veteran being subsequently dropped for the controversial World Cup play-offs against the Republic of Ireland.

A move is seen as the last option in a bid to reignite his international career, and Vieira is desperate to earn a seat on the plane to South Africa with Raymond Domenech's French side.

Spurs were one of a number of clubs who were strongly linked with the player in the summer, and are once again being linked with the midfield star.

It is Liverpool who are believed to be in poll position however, with reports in Italy linking the Reds with a move for the 33-year-old in January.

With midfield injury woes adding to the growing list of problems at Anfield, Benitez would be looking to bring the former Juventus man in on a fairly short-term basis, with the possibility of a loan not out of the question.

This story has been reproduced from today’s media. It does not necessarily represent the views or position of Liverpool Football Club.

A poor Inter team that are 5 points clear at the top?

If he's available on a free I'd have him. Why not? He'd fill out the squad with good experience and that's what we need. Him and RVN in on loan would help us a lot.

I agree with that (except the bit about RVN). I think it would be a decent signing.

If Mascherano goes then we will need more bodies.

This was in the Evening Herald yesterday:

Rafa gets desperate - Soccer, Sport - Herald.ie

LIVERPOOL manager Rafa Benitez is considering a bid for golden oldies Patrick Vieira and Ruud van Nistelrooy in a bid to save the season for the Reds.

The Anfield club face into Sunday's Merseyside derby with their confidence knocked by their midweek Champions League exit, and despite the massive spending on players at the club during the Spaniard's reign, Benitez is still eager to bring in fresh talent.

But Reds fans will be concerned about the age profile, the fitness and the hunger of the latest players to be linked with the club, as former Arsenal captain Vieira and ex-Manchester United star van Nistelrooy, both 33, have struggled to impress with their clubs Inter Milan and Real Madrid this season.

Signing two 33-year-olds who last played in the English Premier League three years ago would be seen as an act of desperation from the Reds boss, who no longer trusts his expensively-assembled squad to get Liverpool out of trouble.

Vieira has played little football with Inter this season and is also out of the picture at international level, failing to make the cut for Raymond Domenech's France squad before their World Cup play-off with Ireland earlier this month.

Domenech pointed to Vieira's lack of first team football when he explained his omission of the 1998 World Cup winner and that could provoke Vieira to leave Inter and move back to England.

Vieira is in demand with Tottenham, keen for an experienced midfield player for the second half of the season, also been linked with the player.

Van Vistelrooy has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid and is desperate for first-team football to secure a place at the World Cup.

Real may demand a fee for the Dutchman, and that could cause problems for Liverpool as Benitez may have to sell to raise funds for any move, with Ryan Babel and Andriy Voronin expected to make way.

a bit late don't you think

Giggs and Scholes are probably older and still playing massive roles for United.

No guarantee RVN or Vieira would have the motivation to do anything else bar claiming massive wages, but I'd take a risk on both.

I'd rather we took risks on players who have actually achieved something in the game rather than Voronin, Degen etc
