Does This Train Stop On Merseyside?

Ian Prowse

McKenzie's soul lies above the ground in that

Pyramid near Maryland

Easyjet is hanging in the air

Takin' everyone to everywhere

See the slave ships sailing into port

The blood of Africa is on every wall

Now there's a ley line runs down Mathew Street

It's giving energy to all it meets

Hey does this train stop

Does this train stop on Merseyside?

Alan Williams in the Marlboro' Arms

Giving his story out to everyone

Famine boats are anchored in the bay

Bringing in the poor and desperate

Hey does this train stop

Does this train stop on Merseyside?

Boston babies bouncing on the ground

The Riggers beamin' out to every town

Can't conceive what those children done

Guess there's a meanness in the soul of man

Yorkshire policemen chat with folded arms

While people try and save their fellow fans

Why don't you remember?

As many will be unaware, as I was, 'Does This Train Stop on Merseyside' is a song by Ian Prowse, and was deemed to be John Peel to be second favourite, behind only his well documented favourite of 'Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones.

Here, from Ian Prowse's band website, Amsterdam is the story about it.

Does This Train Stop On Merseyside

and from Christy Moore's site, the lyrics, which are slightly different to what Christy sings in the version above...

This is fucking crazy. My world has just flipped upside down and inside out. Christy Moore on the Liverpool Way GF. Sweet Jesus. The man is from my home town. Know him well.

Amazing.

Imagine, a famous musician being talked about on the internet! Shocking.

I grew up listening to Christy every Sunday morning. Me Da had his records and he'd play them non stop.

My mate's a big fan of Christy Moore and he went to see him in concert some years ago at the Barrowlands in Glasgow.

He went to get a drink at the bar and was told it was soft drinks only. Turns out CM had stipulated this as part of the deal. Something to do with his being a recovering alcoholic. This was before the smoking ban and tabs were banned an all.

Imagine that. A gig in Glasgow with no alcohol on sale. * shudder *
