  • Liverpool 4 Tottenham Hotspur 2 (May 5 2024)

Well that was better, I suppose. It didn’t feel that way at full time, but on reflection this was mostly good up until both teams made substitutions and the game turned on its head. Thankfully we had a four goal cushion, and thankfully Paul Tierney and VAR chose to ignore a reasonable penalty appeal for Spurs that could have got them back to 4-3. Had that happened, I think we’d have blown it.   There were serious flashbacks to last season when we blew a 3-0 lead to Spurs and then Jota

  • Report: New contract for Van Dijk seen as a priority

Virgil Van Dijk is viewed as an irreplaceable member of the Liverpool squad as they move into a new era according to a new report.   With the appointment of Arne Slot all but confirmed, the next point of business for the key decision makers with the clubs hierarchy is working out who is going to stay and work under the new manager and which players will be moving on.   In recent weeks a lot of the public discussion has revolved around Mo Salah’s future with one prevailing vie

Klopp: This job was never difficult for me because I love working with people

Jurgen Klopp has spoken further about his upcoming Liverpool departure saying that he is having to prepare himself for a quieter life.   The end to German’s tenure at Liverpool is now under two weeks away and  the reality  has now well and truly sunk in for players and fans alike.   Liverpool in the Klopp era have basically won every major honour there is, but more important than that, is the strong bond between manager and fans.   Each party is on the same waveleng

Quansah: How you recover from your mistakes is the most important thing

While the Jurgen Klopp farewell tour will not conclude with ultimate success, that only paints half the picture of this campaign.   At the beginning of the 2023/4 season, the squad was somewhat in a state of flux.   Highly valued and successful veterans had departed and it was universally seen as the right decision as the team needed to progress into a new era, or as the manager termed it ‘Liverpool 2.0.’   While it was an exciting reset, it was also not without ris

What the fuck are they abstaining for? Anyway, it isn’t confirmed yet as this vote was about agreeing to explore the possibility and there’ll be another vote in June when the proposal is finalised. I haven’t read up on it too much as it feels pretty pointless anyway. The top clubs can spend 4.5 times the amount th

And I thought last week’s round up was a chore. This one just feels utterly pointless now. I;m on the beach with Brighton and West Ham and I'm just mailing it in now until the season finishes. Virtually everything has been decided other than the title, and that hurts too much to even really think about. It’s still too raw after the way we meekly bowed out of the race.   The relegation places are more or less decided. Luton or Burnley still have an outside shot at catching Forest but re

How much worse is this going to get? I had hoped that Goodison would be rock bottom but if anything this is worse. Not because of the result or even the performance, but because of the lack of a bounce back, the drama and the sadness we’re all feeling as everything just falls apart around Jurgen. It’s fucking miserable and for him to be going out like this is just awful.   I’ll get to all the Salah stuff later, but that was just the fly on top of the shit. The performance wasn’t terrib

We live to fight another day then. Defeat here would have buried us and considering the run we’d been on it wouldn’t have been much of a shock. Fulham is a difficult place to go when they’re at it, but thankfully they weren’t and it was fairly comfortable in the end.    The game was still in the balance at half time though so it wasn’t a completely stress free afternoon, but once we got the second goal it was generally without drama and the third goal made it completely safe. The easy thing to say here is that the damage was done in the first leg. Obviously it was, but that’s not what I want to hear today as I feel like it’s excusing the clueless, lifeless and gutless second half we saw here. This tie was not over after last week. It certainly wasn’t over when we pulled a goal back within seven minutes and I don’t think any of us thought it was over when we went in at half time with a one goal lead, primed for a second half charge.   So to just say now “yea

I don’t want to do this round up to be honest. Not after the derby. Would have been ok if there were no midweek games and I was just writing about the weekend, but midweek has proper put a massive downer on it all and made me want to just forget all about footy, as much as its humanly possible for someone who writes about it for a living anyway.   You probably don't want to read about it either, which is fair enough. Urgh. What a sickening weekend. Literally in my case, I missed the Palace game after being up all night spewing and shitting. I maybe could have made the game but I was worried about shitting myself. Maybe some of the players should have been as cautious as me and stayed away too. It wasn’t just our players shitting all over themselves though, Arsenal’s did too. I’ll get to them in a bit.   The early game on Saturday saw Spurs get their pants pulled down at Newcastle. 4-0 flattered the

Monday Apr 15:   Feels somewhat inappropriate to be as down about the Palace game as I am considering what today is. You started out with the Blues. Was it always going to be Everton or did you have any trials with Liverpool when you were a kid?     It was always going to be Everton, I didn’t get an option. When I was 10 or 11 I was scouted by them and that was the first thing I did, join Everton. All my family were Evertonians - lots of them still are - so it was a natural thing to do and I was very fortunate. Things change quickly in life though.    We’ll get to why you left in a second, but I wanted t

When you think of guile and grace as a midfielder, one name that personally comes to mind is Xabi Alonso. To this day, Xabi remains in my top three all-time favourite Liverpool players for many of the qualities that will be discussed in this piece.Signed for a absolute snip at £10.7 million from Real Sociedad at the start of Rafa Benitez's tenure in the summer of 2004, the Spaniard's arrival in England was at the peak of a pre-eminent era for central midfielders in the Premier League. He joined

"El Niño strikes - Fernando Torres’ first goal" by Jason Harris

When an eagle-eyed photographer spied the words 'You’ll Never Walk Alone' on an armband worn by Fernando Torres in an Atletico Madrid game, it appeared destiny that the Spaniard would one day play for the Reds.   Liverpool fans were crying out for an iconic figure to lead the line and help take the team to the next level. Their dreams became a reality when Rafa Benitez signed the 23-year-old from his boyhood club for £27 million, which at the time was a club record fee. While Torres wa

'SuperDan' breaks the drought at Old Trafford (2000/01)" by Jason Harris

"One day we will beat Manchester United, I promise you that." Those were the immortal words from Gerard Houllier after a gut-wrenching 2-1 defeat to the Red Devils at Old Trafford in January of 1999.    Houllier was never a manager chasing headlines with the way he spoke, but the Frenchman saw something in the team he had taken sole ownership over just a few months before after initially sharing the role with Roy Evans.   It had been close to ten years of misery when playing

Emlyn Hughes is one of Liverpool finest ever players and captains, having given 12 years sterling service to the club and captaining the Reds to their first European Cup success in 1977.   Emlyn saw and did it all during his time on Merseyside, but of all the weird and wonderful things he experienced as a Liverpool player, perhaps nothing was as surreal and memorable as his first night as a Red.   The following is an extract from Emlyn’s book, entitled ‘Emlyn Hughes: Crazy Horse’, and re

Kop Tales In Their Own Words: Steve McMahon - Switching Sides

Swapping Everton for Liverpool is always a contentious move likely to upset fans of the Blues, but when you’re a local lad, boyhood fan and a player who became club captain it’s going to sting a lot more.    Steve McMahon could have joined Liverpool immediately after walking away from Goodison Park. He was out of contract and there would have been nothing Everton could have done to stop it, but out of respect for his boyhood club McMahon instead chose to make a two year stop at Aston V
