Interesting shout. He hasn't been very influential out wide - he's suffering a bit out there, but it may be that Dalglish sees him as a Ray Kennedy type player and is willing to give him time to adjust. If there's no room for him in the middle when Gerrard's not in the team, you have to doubt whether there will be once Gerrard's fit.

To my mind it's more about making the best of a bad lot on the left stringy.

I think its more a case of Kenny doesn't trust the wide players to be honest rather than not wanting Raul central, I know I'm in the vast minority but I still want Cole to be given the chance to come good for us but don't think it'll happen now

So you're saying a fans player of the year has to have at least a player of the month award?

Must be time for you pills again...

If im not mistaken that is exactly how this award shortlist works, I think to be on the shortlist for this award you need to have been voted PFA fans player of the month earlier in the season

maybe, but would Meireles get a central berth if we had Downing on the left and Gerrard fit? He'd probably find himself out on the opposite wing.

I hope not, because Gerrard would clearly be better there.

Personally I think there's plenty of room in the centre for Gerrard and Meireles with someone else anchoring though, and I think Suarez can play as part of a three man attack with Carroll and one other; possibly someone like Ashley Young.

I don't really see the point of Downing unless we're playing 4-4-2, which I hope we won't be.

I was just using him as an example. It will be interesting to see how and who we set up next term. Meireles has looked the part when playing the central attacking midfield role, but Gerrard would argue that he's not bad there either.

I generally believe he won't be starting next season.

Gerrard, Lucas, Spearing, Meireles, Shelvey and I'm not sure we need another midfielder but I think we'll sign one. Not to forget, we also have the emergence of Suso and Coady. Although, Shelvey should go on loan and there's no guarantee Gerrard will be fit but I just don't see him in next seasons team, especially when we re-sign Xabi. *jokes*

I'd be surprised if we don't sign at least two, hopefully three or four wingers this summer with Cole, Maxi and Jovanovic all leaving. Very little chance he'll get a game wide then.

I reckon he will still get a regular game in a 4-3-3

As happy as I am for him, this again proves the voting system is flawed, with the flavour of the month or at least recent months at time of voting (Jan/February?) usually winning the vote. Raul had a period of banging them in around that period, not player of the season for me though.

So my point is why not use both? One DM should be enough against most teams we play, allowing two midfielders who can join the attack when needed. Get another player to go the other side of Carroll to Suarez and we're sorted with Kuyt and this Marveaux fella as backup attackers. 4-3-3 is the most logical formation with the personnel we have, because other formations mean bringing in more reinforcements. Might even mean we don't need a new midfielder if Kenny thinks Lucas can anchor.

Agree, but without pace and width from the fullbacks, we will be too narrow. Meireles, Lucas and Spearing, the current incumbents, are not going to provide balls in from the touchline. If you're suggesting Gerrard and Meireles will each take up a midfield berth, with Spearing or Lucas as a holding midfielder, we will need a left back with pace, composure, a trick or two, and energy. Otherwise, we're not going to play to Carroll's strengths.
