If we took a holiday

Tyler Morton  : Used in a deeper midfield role than usual against Cardiff, partly because of James Buckley serving his ban for his sending-off. Best moment of the first half was his defensive block to foil the best chance for the visitors. Helped set up the only goal of the game two minutes into the second half with a lob from the centre circle to pick out Brereton-Diaz, who in turn found Bradley Dack, who in turn dribbled a shot off a defender into the net. Another good cross after that should have provided another goal; Sam Gallagher got not-quite-enough of his flowing locks to the ball, and if he had missed it completely it would have dropped to the feet of the unmarked Dack beyond him.  Took a bang on the knee with four minutes left and was subbed. Rovers hung on to win, take their goal difference back to 0 and go back into third. “Absolutely nothing” in the rumour that LFC are considering recalling him to bolster our midfield, apparently.

Jack Bearne : Played the full game at home to Hereford; his left-wing cross created the opening goal of the game, but, after the visitors equalised, squandered a late chance to win it when shooting straight at their keeper. You can’t be the hero every game.

Max Woltman : Again introduced as a late sub, this time getting ten minutes as Doncaster attempted to preserve their two goal lead at home to Carlisle. The visitors got one goal back, but Rovers got all three points and are now just one point away from the playoff places.

Leighton Clarkson : Back from his injury into the side for Aberdeen’s game with hapless Ross County. Not as involved as usual; had one poor shot at goal, a volley off the outside of his right boot, and a better one that was blocked in the second half. Subbed off with 15 minutes left. “Absolutely nothing” in the rumour that LFC are considering recalling him to bolster our midfield, apparently. The 0-0 draw brought the run of four straight defeats to an end, but it didn’t stop the home crowd booing the team off. Still fourth, but losing touch with Hearts.

Conor Bradley : A quieter game than usual in Bolton’s 3-0 win at Barnsley; no goals, no assists and no tenth booking of the season. Subbed off with ten minutes to play, possibly with that in mind. “Absolutely nothing” in the rumour that LFC are considering recalling him to bolster our midfield, apparently. Bolton back up to fifth.

Adam Lewis : Played the full game for Newport at home to crisis club Crawley; ‘lively and creative’ at wing-back, one particularly good cross that deserved better than being headed over. The home team came from two goals down to grab a 2-2 draw.

James Balagizi : Also played 90 minutes for Crawley in that game, in a deeper midfield role than previously used, under the caretaker coaching staff. Has to take some share of the blame for Newport’s first goal; he was in position to clear a cross near the penalty spot, and took a complete air shot, before another cross resulted in the ball in the net. The point leaves them six clear of Rochdale; nine or ten more should be enough to keep them up.

Vitezslav Jaros : Unused substitute for Stockport at Grimsby on his return from injury after ten weeks out; it will be interesting to see if he regains his place.

Just wide

Leighton Clarkson : Still getting picked every week for Aberdeen. Moved further forward almost to a 10 in the switch to a 4-5-1 for the game against St. Johnstone. Created an early chance with a no-look back heel in the opposition box. Then played a low free kick into the box for Duk to beat the keeper, only for VAR to flag him offside. Eventually Aberdeen got two late goals, one from a long punt up the middle and another from a corner. Clarkson came off with a couple of minutes left, not injury-related.

Anderson Arroyo : Back in the team for the Copa del Rey tie against top-flight Valladolid, a game that was heavily influenced influenced by an early sending-off for the visitors for dissent. Picked up a booking after half an hour, by which time Alaves were a goal to the good; the yellow card apparently the reason behind him being subbed off at half time. The former UEFA Cup runners-up went through and will play Sevilla in the last 16 next week. Arroyo was an unused sub in the subsequent league game, another 1-0 win over Burgos that enabled them to leapfrog their opponents into fourth, three points behind leaders Eibar.

Max Woltman : On the bench again for Doncaster at table-topping Leyton Orient. Came on with twenty minutes to go, straight after Rovers went behind to a ridiculous volley from outside the box. Didn’t see much of the ball in the torrential rain. Doncaster stay a point off the playoffs.

Adam Lewis : In the line-up at left wing-back for Newport’s trip to crisis club Rochdale that went ahead after a late pitch inspection at soggy Spotland. Set up a good early chance with a cross that Omar Bogle headed at a defender on the goal line. Rochdale took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Lewis cancelled that out two minutes into the second period with an inswinging free kick from miles out by the right touch line that skidded through a crowd of muddy players and past the home goalie for his first goal in a competitive game for 103 weeks. It finished 1-1, County still nine points ahead of Rochdale, the measure by which every team in the bottom half of League Two will be judged over the next four months.

Conor Bradley : Big game for Bolton with the visit of League One leaders Plymouth.

Defensively solid but not as creative or adventurous in attack as usual.

Owen Beck : Brought on as a late substitute in the Bolton game, described as ‘an eye-catching performance’ with a number of good crosses from the left, including what was probably the best chance of the second half when he found fellow sub Elias Kachunga for a shot that was tipped onto the post. Took a heavy challenge in stoppage time that saw the opposition captain get a second yellow; hopefully no long term damage. The 0-0 draw leaves Bolton fifth.

Jack Bearne : Played around an hour for Kidderminster at Leamington; not his best game, subbed off without getting a shot on target in a drab game that ended 0-0.

Vitezslav Jaros : Unused sub as Stockport crashed out of the FA Cup at home to Walsall after conceding a 95th-minute penalty.

Tyler Morton : Came on as a substitute in the 88th minute to help see out time in Blackburn’s 1-0 win at Norwich. At least one of our players is in the next round.

Billy Koumetio : His loan at Austria Wien is to be cancelled by mutual consent between the clubs. Perhaps he will return to Kirkby with a smidgen of self-awareness.  Perhaps I’ll have a threesome with Jodie Comer and Sam Quek. Probability is an area of mathematics that should be taught more widely.

You would have to define ‘improve’ first

Owen Beck : Picked at left wing-back for Bolton’s EFL quarter-final against crisis club Portsmouth, the first of two games in five days against Pompey. Played just over an hour, during which he had a great shot brilliantly blocked; by this time Wanderers had already got what proved to be the only goal of the game. Accrington await in the semi-final.

Conor Bradley : Came off the bench to play on the right in that cup game at the same time as Beck left the field; defensively solid. Back into the lineup for the league game with the same apparently directionless opposition, along with the rest of the first choice team (Beck an unused substitute). Had a couple of early efforts thwarted by the Pompey keeper before Wanderers asserted themselves with goals either side of half time, and Bradley set up the third for Owen Toal with an accurate return pass in the box. Bolton stay fifth and look on target for the playoffs.

Rhys Williams : Brought off the bench by crisis club Blackpool to replace injured skipper Marvin Ekpiteta with fifteen minutes to play at Watford (already 1-0 down by then). Not to blame for the concession of the penalty by keeper Chris Maxwell that cost them a second goal. Could well have to play a fair bit more in the near future; Blackpool are just a point off the bottom of the table.

Tyler Morton : Back into the side for the return to Championship action for Blackburn at Rotherham. On a day where nothing went right for Rovers, they went behind after 32 seconds; Morton’s patient passes around the opposition penalty area came to nothing, and it got worse early in the second half when his slip on the edge of the box allowed Oliver Rathbone a shot which bounced off the crossbar and over the goal line. It ended 4-0 for the home teams first win since before the World Cup. Blackburn still fifth (with a negative goal difference).

Adam Lewis : Played the full game in Newport’s unsuccessful trip to Carlisle. “Probably County’s best player”; an early cross should have been converted rather than headed over, then he nearly replicated the long-range free kick that he scored against Rochdale. Finally he hit the post with a stooping header. “Those highlights on ITV just don’t do it justice”, apparently; it’s still a 2-0 defeat on FlashScore either way.

County still seven points above the relegation places with twenty games left.

Jack Bearne : Played the whole match as plucky Kidderminster came up short in their FA Trophy tie at Dorking Wanderers (a real club playing in the same division as world-famous Wrexham, honest). After the home team went ahead from the first attack of the game, he was arguably Kidderminster’s best player in the first half. Had an early chance from the left side of the box that was pushed away for a corner, then won the free kick that produced the Harriers equaliser, hoofed over the Dorking keeper from 35 yards out. Volleyed over the bar from a corner, then dragged a shot wide with his weaker right foot. Dorking then scored twice to finish the half 3-1 up. Despite increasing pressure as the second half went on, and a late goal for Harriers, Dorking held on 3-2. Now they can concentrate on the league, etc.

Leighton Clarkson : Started the League Cup semifinal against Rangers. Was the main creative force in the first half, providing the pass to Miovski when he scored (ruled out for offside) and then starting the move that Miovski finished for the opening goal just before halftime. After the Rangers equaliser, he hit the post with a long-range shot that had McGregor beaten.  He sustained an injury in making that shot and had to go off. Rangers eventually won 2-1 after extra time, on a terrible playing surface at Hampden that had not recovered from the other semifinal 24 hours earlier. Hopefully back to the league in midweek.

Max Woltman has been recalled from his loan spell with Doncaster Rovers.

The 19-year-old will return to Liverpool after 14 appearances in all competitions for the League Two club this season.

Woltman joined the Reds at the age of seven and has progressed through the Academy ranks. He made two senior appearances for the club during the 2021-22 campaign.

Could do a job in that division doing the running and tracking on behalf of, say, a prolific but aging forward, probably called Paddy Madden or Iain Henderson, and chipping in an occasional goal himself.

Jakub Ojrzynski has been recalled from his loan spell with Radomiak Radom.

The 19-year-old goalkeeper will return to Liverpool from Poland after three appearances in all competitions for the Ekstraklasa outfit this season.

Ojrzynski arrived at the Academy from Legia Warsaw in 2019, featuring for both the U18s and U23s, before penning a new long-term deal with the Reds in 2021.

He spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan with Welsh Premier League side Caernarfon Town ahead of his second temporary switch.

It did strike me that it was a steep rise in class from the Welsh league to the top flight in Poland. Anyway I'm sure there's a plan to redistribute the keepers who are too old for the Under-18s.

Still some players out on loan

Anderson Arroyo : Back into the Alavés defence for the Copa del Rey tie against Sevilla. Played well defensively, especially in the first half where the Basque side dominated possession but didn’t finish their chances. This came back to haunt them just after half time when elderly Ivan Rakitic placed a long-range header beyond the home keeper with what turned out to be Sevilla’s only shot on target. Arroyo came off with twenty minutes left in a shift to a back three, but despite constant pressure at the end of the game, Sevilla held on for the 1-0 win. Now they can concentrate on the league.

Leighton Clarkson : Passed fit to play for Aberdeen at Hearts in their return to league action after their semifinal defeat on Sunday. They got snotted. Clarkson saw almost nothing of the ball in the opposition half, and did create Aberdeen’s best chance of the first half with a through ball to Miovski with which he should he done better; the real problem was that the home side were by that stage already 3-0 up.  Clarkson was taken off after an hour with the score 4-0; it finished 5-0, and there are murmurs of dissent about manager Jim Goodwin with the team now nine points off third place and only two ahead of seventh.

It’s about the right level for Jarell, and it gets him three months or so away from having Koumetio point at him, and being told to play emergency right back. Of course it means having Huyton polymath Sir Joseph Barton as his boss, but therm’s the breaks.

This is comp I mentioned in the bajcetic thread the other day. Looks like the championship has allowed to be more expansive than we've seen so far.

I do like the cut of his jib.  Some of the long passes pinged out to the wing come with a caveat that he's getting more time and space than he would in the Premier League, but the clips of him keeping possession under pressure look promising.

Always winter, but never Christmas

Not a lot of games to cover this time, on account of the recalls and the weather, and not much fun either…

Tyler Morton : Continues in midfield for playoff contenders Blackburn. Created their goal at Bristol City, running past the forwards to get onto a through ball in the inside-right channel, which he pulled back to an unmarked Bradley Dack, who made no mistake. Rovers got outplayed in the second half, especially after Daniel Ayala was sent off for a soft second yellow, and the 1-1 result was arguably fortunate. The first league draw for Blackburn since April leaves them fourth, still with a negative goal difference.

Conor Bradley : A rare reverse for Bolton at Derby. Bradley wasn’t at fault for the first goal Wanderers conceded (created down their left) but was definitely out of position for Derby’s second. Didn’t create as much as usual either. Bolton stay fifth, a place behind their conquerors.

Jack Bearne : Another start on the left of the front three for Kidderminster against Bradford Park Avenue. A scrappy game, marred by increasingly foggy conditions as the afternoon wore on, ended 1-1.

Leighton Clarkson : Played 90 minutes in what is already being called one of the most famous games in the history of the Scottish FA Cup, Darvel’s 1-0 upset of Premier League Aberdeen. Created the first chance of the game with a through ball that was squandered. Got booked later in the first half for a challenge appropriate to a game where you are 1-0 down to a team five divisions below you. Also set up what looked like the equaliser with fifteen minutes left, with a perfect cross for a Miovski tap-in, only to be given offside - television replays suggested Clarkson was clearly on, but there’s no VAR in the competition.

“One of the worst defeats in the club’s history “, said the report on the Aberdeen website. Real pressure now on manager Jim Goodwin; if he were to be sacked, it would be the eleventh managerial change at teams where we have (or had) players on loan this season.

The club cannot insist the loan players play every game at the other club nor have a penalty clause if the club doesnt play them enough to aid their development. But, we have a recall clause inserted so if the club thinks they arent being used and get the playing time, they can recall them.

I dont see the point in loaning players out if they dont get played or even make matchday squads so think the club is doing the right thing. It's the other clubs that are shambolic in my opinion, making a big play to get the players in then not playing them.

I gather Williams was recalled from Blackpool because we're looking to sell Nat and want him as cover if we do.

Transfer window countdown clock

Jack Bearne : Played in the midweek game at Curzon Ashton (an absolutely real club name that I’ve not made up). Didn’t appear to see as much of the ball as usual from the highlights. Came off in stoppage time as Harriers brought on an extra defender, looking to see out time with a 1-0 lead. Which they did. Dropped to the bench in a formation change in the weekend trip to something called ‘Peterborough Sports’; not called upon in their 2-1 win that leaves Kidderminster one point of the promotion playoff places.

Conor Bradley : Another heralded performance in Bolton’s 1-0 win over Forest Green in midweek; involved in the move that led to the winning goal early in the first half, and then putting in a lot of running as a forward after Wanderers were unfairly reduced to ten men when the referee saw fit to send off goal scorer Dion Charles for an incident involving two other players, a red card that was rescinded on appeal. Subbed off in stoppage time; got some shouts for man of the match. Back into midfield for the Saturday trip to Charlton. Another ninety minutes of graft in what their fans are calling the best away performance of their season so far, winning 2-1 to stay safely in the playoff spots. Bradley could have made the points safe, but sliced a shot from the left side of the box over the bar; then he created two more chances, one for nine-hundred-year-old Cameron Jerome, one for another new signing Victor Adeboyejo, both wasted. Bolton stay securely in the playoff positions.

Jarrell Quansah : Made his Bristol Rovers debut in a back three at Morecambe. The game did not develop to their best advantage. Quansah wasn’t significantly at fault for any of Morecambe’s first three goals, but he wandered out of position before the fourth, and he was done like a kipper on the edge of the box for the fifth and final goal. Rovers drop to 12th and their goal difference is inferior to all the sides above them.

On the other hand, fuck Joey Barton.

Anderson Arroyo : Came off the bench for Alavés with ten minutes left to help preserve their 3-1 lead at Mirandes. Back up to fourth and still not out of the running for automatic promotion back to the top flight.

Leighton Clarkson : Could Aberdeen bounce back from their humiliating cup defeat at Darvel?

Hibernian 6 Aberdeen 0.

Clarkson played the first hour; his no-look flick into the box created Aberdeen’s only chance of the first half, and it was 3-0 when he was taken off. Manager Jim Goodwin was sacked after the match, the tenth permanent manager/ head coach to lose their job while one of our players was on loan at their club. So far, that is. The new boss, whoever that might be, will inherit a team in seventh place.

Tyler Morton : Named in the starting lineup for Blackburn’s 4th round FA Cup game at home to Birmingham. Gave the ball away for Birmingham’s opening goal. Was credited with an assist for a short pass on the edge of the box for Rankin-Costello who lashed one home from twenty yards to put Rovers 2-1 up. Not at fault for the Birmingham injury-time equaliser. Into tonight’s fifth-round draw, though; not everyone is.

You know the scene is very humdrum

Jack Bearne : Back into the team for Kidderminster against Blyth Spartans. Not far away in the second minute of the match when he intercepted a pass and tried to chop the keeper from 25 yards out, then had a shot well saved after a run down the right-hand side. Won the free kick that resulted in the second Harriers goal early in the second half. Came off with 15 minutes left with the score 3-1, which is how it ended, and was named Man Of The Match by the club sponsors. Kidderminster are outside the playoff slots only on goal difference.

Leighton Clarkson : Picked in a three-man midfield in their first game since Jim Goodwin was sacked, against St. Mirren. Had Aberdeen’s first chance when trying to chip the goalie from way outside the area - by which time the home team were already down to ten men. Put in a lot of running around defensively. Subbed off in the last ten minutes, by which time St. Mirren were 2-1 up, and they added a third in stoppage time. Aberdeen now seventh, which is dangerously close to a relegation battle.

Luke Chambers : His move to Kilmarnock saw him pitched straight in at left-back at home to Dundee United. All he did was help keep a clean sheet, and supply the cross from the left flank from which Danny Armstrong scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half. Might even be better positionally after more than one training session with his new teammates. Kilmarnock up to the giddy heights of ninth.

‘MasterChef’ meets ‘The Running Man’

Leighton Clarkson  : Still in the side for crisis club Aberdeen’s game with Motherwell, which went better for them than most other games since the start of the year. Credited with the assist for their third goal, a through ball on the left side of the box giving Miovski a tap-in eight yards out. A later free kick led to the ball being put in the net, which was ruled out for, um, I can’t really tell which bit of shirt-pulling was the problem. Just wide with yet another free kick in stoppage time. Also got a booking for a ‘snidey wee trip’ in the centre circle to stop a counterattack; you really do need a bit of that.

Luke Chambers : Back to the reality of a relegation struggle for Kilmarnock at Livingston. At fault for the first of Livingston’s three goals, not getting close enough to stop the cross. On the other hand, got forward well and his passing created Kilmarnock’s best chance of the first half, a shot for Vassell that went wide. Was also in the box when they did get one back, not quite getting his head to a loose ball after the initial shot was saved, but in any case Doidge eventually propelled the ball around Shamal George (yeah, small world). It ended 3-1, Killie now ninth.

Conor Bradley :  Bolton’s promotion push continued with a 1-0 win over Cheltenham. Quiet game for Bradley going forward against defensive opposition who had come for a clean sheet. You can’t be the hero every week. Also picked up his tenth yellow card of the season.

Jarrell Quansah : Made his home debut for Bristol Rovers after their embarrassing display last week; could things go better this week? No! Quansah gave away a pelanty in the third minute with a mis-timed challenge, which was converted by Mo Eisa for Franchise MK. Later stopped what looked a certain second goal for Eisa on the goal line. However, was nowhere to be seen for the Dons second goal, scored from a counterattack after a late Rovers attack was cleared upfield in second half stoppage time.

Anyway, fuck Joey Barton.

Adam Lewis : Newport finally got back on the park against Swindon, having missed games due to bad weather and FA Cup-related postponements. The visitors had a man sent off early for some handbags; Lewis then shot wide from just inside the box. He made amends ten minutes into the second half when his pinpoint cross to the back post was headed in by Cameron Norman at point-blank range. It finished 2-1 to County, their first home win since mid-November, leaving them five points clear of the relegation places.

Fidel O’Rourke : Made his Halifax debut as a late substitute in their 1-0 win at ten-man Oldham. Almost scored immediately, running on to a hoofed clearance but his left-footed shot swerved over the bar.

Jack Bearne : Kidderminster against Scarborough Athletic; Bearne had an early chance when his weak shot on target was pushed away by the visiting goalie. Subbed off with 25 minutes left. Scarborough won with a late goal against the run of play. Still only one place out of the playoffs.

Tyler Morton : ‘Rotated’ to the bench for Blackburn’s game against crisis club Wigan; brought on after an hour with the game still scoreless. Made a good defensive block in stoppage time, then put a free kick just wide. It finished 0-0 though, after an uninspiring performance against the side bottom of the table, and Rovers now down to seventh.
