Cave World by Viagra Boys.

Really enjoyed listening to this, it has marks from punk, rock and unless I'm mistaken some electronica too. I'll listen again and give a brief track by track but overall, I'm giving 7/10.

I'm also going to listen to one of their other records that seems to get overall better reviews so looking forward to that...

Jump Rope Gazers by The Beths

The first time I listened to this I thought it was ok. I’ve listened to it a fair bit more and now I really like it.

It’s just nice melodic indie pop, which is one of my main alleys. Put me in mind of Teenage Fanclub at times, and at other points maybe a bit Weezer-y. With a girl singer obviously, and I really like her voice.

Favourite song might be “Don’t Go Away” primarily for the top notch kiwi pronunciation of “best friend”.

Will definitely check their new album out.

Coincidentally I also had an email yesterday informing The Beths are supporting Paul Kelly on his traditional Making Gravy concert, along with Amyl and the Sniffers. Could be tempted with that.

Although I went a couple of years ago with Courtney Barnett in support along with another of New Zealand’s finest, Marlon Williams. Marlon, incidentally, also has a new album out (My Boy) which is pretty good. Maybe not quite as good as his previous one, (Make Way for Love) which I nearly picked as a GF Album Review Club record.

Anyway, I digressed a bit there, I’ll give Jump Rope Gazers 7/10.

Cave World

Baby Criminal...enjoyable punk romp, straight for the jugular...

Cave Hole...some electronic noise...

Troglodyte...love their sound combining punk and electronica...

Punk Rock Loser...nice swag here...almost steering towards the fun loving criminals...

Creepy Crawlers...the first mis-step, filler noise...

The Cognitive Trade - Off Hypothesis...a little lull here...

Globe Earth - more electronic noise...let's pull up...

Ain't No Thief...literally the sounds are pulling up here just in time...love the sound...

Big Boy...it's OK...

ADD...Not sure pure electronica is their thing...

Human Error...More electronic noise...

Return To Monke...BOOM!!! Let's finish off...

7/10 overall.

King Gizzard have just released a new album. Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs Mushrooms and Lava.

They're releasing three albums in October 2022. Bonkers.

And it's ace.

Jump Rope Gazers - The Beths

Never heard of these so had no idea whatsover what to expect. Based on @Carvalho Diablo's previous choices I expected very obscure. It's definitely gone away from that expectation.

Surprisingly tranquil and poppy. Jangling and light. Like a mild Cranberries crossed with an even milder Paramore.

They only have three albums it appears, so quite a new band it would seem. I'll have a listen to their other albums as it's pleasant enough and the band seem to play well together.

Never heard of them but interesting to note this is their second album and is the one that seems to garner the least praise.

I'll give the album a standalone 6.5/10. Definitely be listening to their other albums to hear if they are superior.

Sorry lads, been busy. I think I have the latest record to review but the Racism thread brought this record back.

Debut record from The Tubes - a local band for me at the time. One of the great frontmen of alltime and a cracking backing band.

Can someone with Spotify link it?

The Tubes - The Tubes

Never heard of these guys before. Going off the name I was expecting some sort of punk, maybe synth punk. But it’s not that at all, it’s what, prog pop funk silliness?

Took me a couple of goes to get into it, but it’s great fun. Some top notch sounds on there and really good playing, plus stupid piss taking lyrics.

Favourite songs are Space Baby, Malagueña Salerosa and What do you want from Life?
Also White Punks on Dope.
Boy Crazy is good too, and Mondo Bondage.

Nice one Howard. 7.9/10

The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers

I had fleetingly heard some work from 'The Beths' and have their track 'Future Me Hates Me' on a playlist.
I have never sat down and really listened to one of their albums though so I guess this was the push I needed.

But having listened to the 'Jump Rope Gazers' album I have mixed feelings about them as a group.
I like the classic guitar/drums/pop harmonies they have going on but I'm still not sure her voice carries some of the songs - it's almost too pretty for the excellent guitar work and drumming.  It's a nice pop record all the same but I honestly wouldn't be rushing to stick it on. Good to hear it though.

Top tracks:

I'm Not Getting Excited - an excellent opener that really kicks. The band really getting their rock on. Could see this being a festival favourite.
Jump Rope Gazers - title track has Sixpence none the Richer vibes off it. Her vocals are lovely on this and the type of song she carries well.
Mars, the God of War - the harmonised vocals are nice here. Great little guitar freak out on the solo.

I'll go with 6.5/10 which I think is fair.

The Tubes. Listened to this album a couple of times now. Never heard of these which is a real surprise as I love 1970s music. Can hear lots of influences of the times - Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Santana to name but a few. Really did enjoy it. Played it on my YouTube subscription which then followed up with music of the time - Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Heaven.

8.5/10 - 9.5/10 for bridging into 1970s treats.
