Keirrison. A Brazilian striker who was scoring for fun in his domestic league, and we were one of the clubs heavily linked with him. He got signed by Barcelona for about £12m in a similar manner to how Atletico managed to sign Aguero, but he ended up getting loaned out to a couple of La Liga clubs and then back home again without ever looking like he would make it in Europe, never mind at Barcelona.

Marc-Vivien Foe. Houllier was deciding between him and the more expensive Hamann and chose to go with the German, which was a shrewd move as Hamann was much the better player. Perhaps it's unfair to name Foe here in light of what was to befall him just a few years later, but we could just as easily have had him on our books at the time he suffered his fatal heart attack. I didn't think he was all that but he was a lot better than Diao who was signed by Houllier off the back of his displays at the World Cup.

Chamakh is a good shout, there were a good few we were linked to in Rafa's last season/Hodgson era that were really, really poor.

Gervinho, Toivonen, van Wolfswinkel (great name, though), NZogbia, Marveaux, Eljero Elia, Torosidis, Pavlyuchenko ... there was a long list of players in those dark days that haven't exactly gone on to prove us wrong for not buying them.

Malouda was a weird one, went to Chelsea for the £££ and was pretty good for a year or so and a car-crash after that.

think you've got that the wrong way round to be honest

he was poor his first year and we were saying we'd dodged a bullet then he was a key player for them for a good for years before suddenly getting frozen out last year
