Im a bit bemused by all the hate for Johnson on here lately.

I fucking love Glen. He's by far our best right back, defensively AND going forward. If we sold him we'd be weakening our squad big time.

Obviously. I wish people could show me some examples of this supposed dodgy defending since kenny came in. The only problem with johnson is his dodgy fitness record.

Jones and Wilson.

I know Wilson has barely played & when he has he's been out of posistion but he's been really, really poor.

Next summer I can deffo see a few of the older / highest earners players (Kuyt / Maxi / Aurellio / Cole / Aquilani) going.

I haven't really got an opinion on Wilson because I haven't seen enough of him, and when I have watched him, more often than not, he's been played at left back.

Don't worry about that kinda logic on here mate, just say he's shit and we need to get rid ASAP or from what you have seen of him he reminds you of a young Alan Hansen.

Skrtel shouldn't even be up for consideration on this years form.

Last year he alternated between being a disaster waiting to happen and being fairly solid.

But this year, hes been very solid. If Carragher was 3/4 years younger and Coates was ready I'd say fair enough. But he deserves his place at the minute.

It's been said so many times before...but why isn't Johnson up on the wing?

He is our best right-winger, a good right-winger we desperately call for. Switching from back to wing worked wonders for Bale!

Why isn't Kenny trying this when we've got Kelly/Flanagan? Or maybe Johnson's hell bent on playing right-back and is all bitchy about it?

I think its been mentioned before as a possibility that he doesn't want to lose his England place thus he prefers to stay as a right back. Don't know if thats conjecture or not but seen a few people mention it.

That might be changing sooner or later if its true though, theres 3/4 rightbacks emerging that could stake a claim sooner or later, Martin Kelly being one of them.

Just because a fullback is good going forward it doesn't always mean that they will automatically make a good winger. It's very different

Bale played on the wing regularly when he was younger, he made switch fulltime to winger age 21, Johnson is 27 and has never played a senior game as a winger, which kinda bollocks up that theory he's our best RW. He looks good going forward as he has the space running from fullback, a winger gets marked so totally different situation

Exactly. When Brazil played Dani Alves on the right wing with Maicon behind him, Alves struggled quite badly. And Alves has very similar attacking instincts to Johnson. Moving into space from a deeper position allows a quick player to utilise his pace to greater effect. Starting further upfield, you are closed down more quickly, often with your opponents being able to double up.

Yes, both these responses have explained my point more eloquently.

Although interestingly, I do think Bale - good as he is - does still play like a supercharged Lb: he looks best when given a nice long run at goal that allows him to exploit his extraordinary athleticism. When required to display his close control and skill in tight situations, he struggles

I wouldn't sell Carroll in January. You'd probably get fuck all.

If you were intent on selling him, I would bring him on in the "easy" games, where he can hopefully score a few, and then sell him end of season for 15 - 20 mill. Personally I'd rather keep him and see how he does for the next 2 seasons. Jesus, if Ngog got the time he did, then Carroll should get 2 seasons at least.

Why would we sell Magic? He's a very good player. I think Kelly is too, but Johnson's the England rightback for a reason.

As for who I would sell, we all know the answer to that, so I won't bother

The answer to your first question is that we can cover that position and cash in on a player who is not a specialist and who we would not miss in the squad. Sadly, being an England right back is no particular qualification, Kevin Davies is an England forward too.

On the second, the judgement of too many would be compromised by that disposal.

More generally the reality of our current status is that we will need to buy and sell, wheel and deal, there are very few players in our squad who are indispensible.

This is a good point and Alves didn't work there that's very true. They did try it though and that's what we haven't done as yet. I think some people are just curious to see what would happen if it was attempted with Johnson playing there for us.

Yes this.

I get what people mean but at least we should give it a go. I doubt that the team would be weaker with Johnson on the right ahead of Kuyt/Henderson. Johnson is a good footballer and a great athlete,

his highlights for us have been on the front half of the pitch so I think he’d adapt nicely.

I know I’m slightly positive, but it would be nice to see this been tried out. We’ve had plenty of players playing in their “wrong” position. He coped well on the left last season, so why not further up the pitch? At least try it.
