You SS has been contacted to see what stage he's at.

Your SS sent an update through a couple days ago telling me it had been posted then, should come through soon.

Thats fair enough. At least i know. I had a similar problem last year when I sent mine.

Is that track list a copy and paste' date=' or have you typed it out yourself, with all the howlers of spelling mistakes?

The reason I ask is that it could help identify the sender as well as the music. I'm thinking Robbie, but I don't think Gymnopedie No. 1 would be among his choice of listening material.

Also, where's the postmark from?

Memories of 'Camels On Fire' from 2009[/quote']

I don't check the postmark cos it's secret.

I typed out the tunes as they appeared on the list given.

Camels on Fire, great band.

Delighted that I've got so much music that is new to me, although it kind of makes me wonder whether I was a bit obvious with some of my choices.

Absolutely no idea who sent it, other people welcome to have a guess.

I'm gonna listen to it now, then some more, and hopefully get the review up tommorow or Boxing Day.

Started listening to mine today, managed to get hold of an second hand cd drive.

The title is of the CD is 'Black and Blues'

Track listing is:

1. Hoochie Coochie Man - Muddy Waters

2. Maybellene - Chuck Berry

3. Papa's Got A Brand New Bag - James Brown

4. Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino

5. Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett

6. One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - John Lee Hooker

7. Good Golly Miss Molly - Little Richard

8. I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) - Aretha Franklin

9. A Sunday Kind Of Love - Etta James

10. Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead) - Nina Simone

11. Slim Slow Slider - Van Morrison

12. I Got The Blues - The Rolling Stones

13. Trampled Underfoot - Led Zeppelin

14. Milk and Alcohol - Dr Feelgood

15. Little Wing (feat Joe Cocker) - Santana

16. Falling Again - Lacuna Coil

17. Black and Blue - Counting Crows

18. Mannish Boy - Muddy Waters

This CD is for the majority of it a walk down my memory lane of growing up as a kid. My taste in music is heavily influenced by the blues and there is a lot of blues on here, all stuff I have in my collection, however the choices are excellent and I love listening to that old sounding song that reminds me of where it all began for me.

My arl fella used to play Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, BB King and Robert Cray all the time in the car and when we would sit off on a weekend.

I had not heard the tune from Aretha before, and she is someone who I have not got enough of in my collection, which is shocking really as she is the soul queen and I love her voice. Sunday Kind Of Love I was something I had forgotten about and I am grateful it's on this CD.

The Lacuna Coil track is new one to me as I had read reviews of them and always didn't like the look of them for some strange reason, don't know why, but the track on here 'Falling Again' will be prompting me to explore a little more of their back catalogue, as they feel very proggy in a sort of way and better than Evanescance.

You can't go wrong with a bit of Dr Feelgood or Led Zep either. Had never heard Santana and Joe Cocker's version of 'Little Wing' either, I enjoyed it as it was a slight different take on Jimi's original. I still think Clapton's version moves away from the origianl the most than any I have heard.

Hadn't heard the Counting Crows for a long time and it was nice to hear Black and Blue as that is one I wasn't that familiar with, reminds me a little of Ben Folds.

All in all a very good compilation of music put together by Secret Santa and this is not a CD that will be lost in the myriad of junk I have, it will stay out as a reminder to put it on in the car on long journey's or when I want to chill out.

So thanks Secret Santa, much appreciated.

The Royal Mail are a bunch of shithouse cunts who deserve shithouse AIDS upon them over Christmas. The least reliable service in this shite fucking country. Cunts.

Apologies to my recipient but the cunts are having trouble tracking it and will let me know whether they have lost it or not.

Right Guys, I'm off home tonight until just after Christmas or after New Years day so away from the computer and the SS spreadsheet until then.

This means there may be the odd case where I can't do certain things until I get back, (although I have some details saved on PM's so I'll be of assistance where I can).

Just want to keep you all updated so you dont think I'm slacking. I'll be back soon and ruling with my iron fist before you know it.

Right then. Here goes my review after several listens:

A Carroll At Christmas Party Mix

1. Mysteries - Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man

Overall, this is a very mellow mix (this particular Christmas party is clearly for the more discerning older party goer) and the tone is set very well by this lilting folk-ish tune. I bought this album on the day it came out and, while I thought it was fine, barely went back to it. This track has actually prompted me to dig it out and get it on the decks. I love the ethereal vocal harmonies alongside the simple acoustic guitar. Great start.

2. Offshore Birmingham - Funki Porcini

Ethereal is the word I used for the last track and it could equally be applied here. There's a lovely, rolling snare beat with a male vocal refrain looped over the top; crassly one could categorise this as "chill out". I would prefer to categorise it as ace. Reminiscent a little of Lemon Jelly.

Unfortunately it's not available on YouTube, so here's a another of theirs to evoke the vibe:

Funki Porcini - Atomic Kitchen

3. Dub Outside - Dennis Blackbeard Bovell & Steve Mason

This remains firmly in the mellow camp but takes things in a dub direction as Steve Mason (the bloke who used to be in the Beta Band) works collaboratively with Dennis Bovell to create a dub record. The tune itself isn't on YouTube, but there's a film of them talking about the collaboration and apparently they were put together by Daddy G from Massive Attack - Mrs Paul's ex from her college days in Bristol - who is vaguely related to Dennis. Small world. This is tune is ace.

Here's another track off the album; you can almost smell the weed whilst listening to it:

Yesterday Dub

4. Come Ride With Me - Death In Vegas

I've never heard anything by these before, but I have to say this sounds nothing like I expected. Far more electronic and - again, I use that word - ethereal than I thought. I always had these down as mad rock heads. I don't think I'd listen to this on its own but, in the context of the mix, it works absolutely perfectly - which is what any mix is about.

5. Electric Alice - Grinderman

Who can't love Nick Cave? I mean, musically, I think he's exceptionally hit and miss. However, what music head could fail to appreciate his originality, idiosyncrasy or longevity? This maintains the vibe of the mix but weirds things up a bit with discordant strings and atonal guitar riffs. I really like it here and, as ever with him, the lyrics are boss. I love the jazz-influenced drumming, too.

6. Loving Pauper - Gregory Isaacs

Straight up reggae from a legend of the genre. This is a proper mix where the sequence is fully planned both in terms of mood and tempo. This tune sweetens things up again after Grinderman but maintains the strong vein of mellow that's been present from the off.

7. Cold Rain - Talib Kweli

Either a lucky coincidence or (more likely) my SS has paid attention to my tastes, like a good SS should. This is from one of my favourite ever MCs and is a tune I hadn't heard before. It takes things a little more up tempo but with a flow like Kweli's, remains very much in keeping with what came before, vibe-wise. I like the heavier beats as well as the grandiose piano and backing vocals.

8. New Love - Strong Arm Steady

And again, a tune that touches my own tastes while remaining true to the mix. A Madlib production that obviously touches all the right buttons for me with a Bluesy vocal sample looped deep in the production under an acoustic guitar.

9. Turn Me Up Some - Busta Rhymes

Deffo someone who's been paying attention. Dilla on the beats; 'nuff said.

10. I Chase The Devil - Max Romeo

A classic. I wouldn't trust anyone who didn't like this, no matter what their tastes.

11. Ing - Mungo's Hi-Fi

Back to the reggae riddims with ever so slightly more of a dancehall vibe to this one, keeping the beats heavier without ditching the thematic vibe. It's fine in the mix, if not something I'd seek out repeatedly.

12. Good Lookin' Gal - Bobby Digital & Buju Banton

Bobby Digital (AKA RZA) appears to be absent from this unless he was behind the mixing desk. However, his presence would - again - signify someone who'd noted my tastes as The Wu are right up there in the Paul pantheon of musical heroes. I love Banton's voice but I would offer a pause for thought: I had a big problem with this bloke prior to his conversion; his homophobic lyrics were fucking abhorrent. However, he's since become more conscious and devoted himself to Jah and, with the reggae (as opposed to dancehall) feel of this tune, I assume it's of his latter period. It's OK but, without his voice, would not be of any interest to me usually.

13. Live On - Bounty Killer & Marcia Griffiths

This has a different title on YouTube, but it's the same tune embedded below. I can take it or leave it, to be honest. Another reggae tune with two great voices, but it's not doing enough for me musically.

14. Good Life - Brassroots

A brass band version of the Inner City classic. Brilliant idea, perfectly executed.

15. Wacha - Letta Mbulu

Her tune What's Wrong With Groovin'? is an all-time classic; one of my favourite ever tunes. However, I haven't heard anything else by her, so this was a rare treat. It moves away from the jazz of the aforementioned tune for a more 60s-type groove (albeit with an African flavour). It's fine and showcases her great voice really well, but isn't on Youtube so I've thrown my favourite up instead.

16. Tropical Hot Dog Night - Captain Beefheart

This is fucking brilliant and the first Beefheart tune I've ever heard. Zappa's great mate (which is, of course, a wonderful thing) was clearly a genius; I'll be buying more of his music now. This isn't the version on my mix, but it's near enough:

17. Lazarus - The Boo Radleys

Starts dubby, then goes guitar pop with a massive slice of orchestration thrown in too. This is a tune I already knew and liked. I used to work with their bassist's missus, Catherine, by the way. She's lovely.

18. It's Not Meant To Be - Tame Impala

More slightly psychedelic guitar pop with wicked beats; a big sound. I fucking love it when the vocals come in. Superb - this is what pop music should sound like but rarely fucking does.

19. Mistakes & Regrets - And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead

Not at all what I expected from these, based on their name. Again, melodic, poppy guitar with the requisite amount of weirdness and balls to make it interesting. Not something I'd go back to on its own, but an emphatic winner on this mix taking the whole to a crescendo as it reaches its end.

20. Flowers On The Wall - The Statler Brothers

And finally, something a little light-hearted yet brilliant for the last track (which is, of course, the perfect way to end any mix). This will be familiar to anyone with any interest whatsoever in popular culture, but no less brilliant for all that.

*Sings*

"Smokin' cigarettes and watching Captain Kangeroo..."

In summary, this is a very well-researched, brilliantly planned and highly enjoyable CD. It is blatantly obvious that a massive amount of work went into it (and that's before I mention the artwork) and I am very grateful.

I have no idea who did it if my last guess was a miss. Does anyone else know? If not, I'd like my SS to reveal himself in a couple of days please so I can say thanks in the traditional way via rep (having given others the chance to suggest who you might be).

I like the idealogy of SS but not through the medium of music, would be interesting to branch out into other fields, having said that fuck knows how. Maybe will give it a go next year but am not nearly enough of a music nerd to suggest stuff people won't have heard of before, that plus I might be away in SE Asia for a month again. Does it have to be on CD as that seems a rather outdated method now...?

The CD thing is to try to push people into making more effort. It's about the artwork as much as the musical choices. To be honest, a download would give me far more scope musically, but then again, you get a tangible gift with a CD.

You should deffo do it next year Rem; you don't need to be a music nerd to get involved.

Righto time to review my c.d.

Not much effort gone into the cover artwork i'm afraid, it's just a collection of a few album covers with Secret Santa 2011 in the middle. Must do better!

The tracklisting is given on the inside so let's move on to track one....

1, From a balance beam - Bright eyes To be honest i've never been a fan of Bright eyes, just don't like his voice but this one isn't as annoying as his other songs but that's about all the positive things i'll say about it.

2, Dreaming of you - The Coral Have 2 albums of these lads, i love the catchy sound of some of their songs and this is one of them.

3, Alison - Elvis Costello Don't know much of his stuff but i've always liked what i have heard and this is no different. Don't know if i'd go out and buy an album but i'd never turn him off if i hear him.

4, Anchorage - Michelle Shocked Never heard of this lady, singer songwriter stuff and it's easylistening. Tis grand, not something i'd go back for more though.

5, Born on a train - The Magnetic Fields Not bad this, defo give it another listen and maybe more of their stuff. Good indie sound to them.

6, Suffragette City - David Bowie This doesn't need a review, it's Bowie who i'm a big fan of. Good choice.

7, All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem I'm wondering if my secret Santa done some revision on me as i'm a massive massive fan of this band and this song is fucking amazing, it has everything. I miss them.

8, Roads - Portishead Ah great tune from a very good band. Portishead are just shit cool with a great mood attached to their songs.

9, Reckoner - Radiohead This is one band who i just can't connect with, they're a definite marmite band especially with Yorkes voice. I gave it a listen but as usual it just doesn't do it for me, oh well.

10, Girl Sailor - The Shins Nah not into this, hasn't got enough rawness for me, it's a bit too nice.

11, The Weight - The Band Great song, brings back memories when i used to own the Easy Rider soundtrack. One of those classics that will always sound good. Great choice.

12, Decatur - Sufjan Stevens I know a good few people that like this but again it's not for me. It's not bad but not to my taste.

13, Monsters - Band Of Horses There's a theme with most of his album that my Santa is a big fan of easylistening singer songwriters, i'm not into that stuff but i don't mind it and the same with this, it's good and i'd never turn it off but i wouldn't go out and buy it.

If i can for a moment recommend a local band who have made it quite big in Ireland and are playing festivals around Europe who do this stuff, they're called Oh Emperor and they're pretty good at it. Here's a track from their album which might be to your taste....

14, Sam Cooke - Jetplane Landing Ooooo sorry just don't like this, uuurgh no thanks.

15, A change is gonna come - Sam Cooke Ah i see what you done there! Anyhows what a frickin voice, beautiful choice and this song wins the album, i love this shit!

16, I'll Believe in anything - Wolf Parade I like this band, they've got that edge to them that i like. They're different but in a good way.

17, It's the end of the World as we know it - REM I was a massive REM fan in my teens (34 now), wore the t-shirt and all that and i loved their early stuff. This is from when they were a great band, sadly they turned shite for me towards the late 90's. I was so sad i even learned the words to this and i'm singing along....oh dear.

18, Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire Big fan of this band and this is a cracking song from the first album, great way to finish the album.

Thanks to my Secret Santa for his, i enjoyed bits and didn't enjoy other bits but it was a taste clash for alot of it but that's what this is all about.

I'm definitely going to pick up a Sam Cooke album and for most of the other songs i have most of them and i'm just not into the other tracks.

I'll have to have a look over the list and come back with a guess.

Yeah I would be most enthusiastic about the artwork, the CD side of things would be pretty inconvenient though. I reckon I'd make a compilation on a USB drive or something instead. My understanding of SS is to introduce weird and wonderful new acts to people who would never otherwise have heard of them and my music taste is far from obscure/eclectic as I'm just too lazy to investigate the unknowns and hidden gems, hence the music nerd comment. What would be the point of playing something that would probably be akin to an Indie late nineties compilation album with the odd Black Keys track? Like I say, I love the idea of creating something for someone, but music just doesn't seem to be my medium.

Also I would struggle to do justice in listening and reviewing what someone else created for me. But who knows, another year passes and it might be right up my street.

I got a pm from Juniper on Christmas Eve, with news from my SS, that my CD should be with me very soon. Nothing more I can do now, apart from wait. Hopefully, tomorrow. There's no post here on Saturdays, so I hope I don't have to wait almost a week from now - Tuesday, or, God forbid, later, for it to arrive.
