Spot on. Theres always the opportunity to trade through Amazon, but they'd still have to end up lowering their prices to compete with the sellers doing the same so its really not an option.

Thats the reason for the last question in the survey, I'm looking for the most effective way for the business to use the internet - if that means investing in a big online marketing campaign that might be the solution.

If they are going to go online they either need to be highly specialized and draw a specific demographic (e.g. I've seen anarchist and occult sites like that) or sell niche products like rarities that are high margin, low-volume. If they have neither it's difficult to imagine why people would go back to them even after a big marketing campaign.

Got in there.

I'm hardly representative though, as I have a peculiar and somewhat anachronistic relationship with books. I've spent most of my life working with the written word in one form or another, and I have a strange (even to me) reverence for them. I never have bought a book from an online shop and never will, and only once or twice in my life have used a chain bookstore (they're too organized, too sanitized, they creep me out). I cringe at the very concept of e-readers, and don't use the internet for much more than following sport and occasionally doing superficial spot research for a project I might be writing. Even new books bother me, they dont look or feel right until they've had the spine cracked, a few pages dog-eared and half a cup of tea spilled on them.

I'll go to independent or used bookstores once or twice a week, buy something almost every visit and almost never have any idea what I want when I go in. So I'm not much of a case study, as I'm hardly the target audience for places like that trying to expand. They couldn't get more money out of me short of holding a gun to my head.

I always had the same kind of relationship with bookshops as with record shops. I go in, maybe looking for something specific, but can spend hours mooching around looking at other things and come away with things I never intended buying.

And I miss record shops, they've been hit a lot harder by the internet, there are two bookshops here but the only record shop closed down last year. Music accepts digitization better than literature but it loses something in the process. God be with the days when every second person on your Saturday afternoon street would have their Golden Discs or Leeside Music bag of vinyl and the swagger that it gave you.

Isn't exaggerating about how long things take a man thing?
