Firstly, I think arguing about the existence of a supernatural being is futile (from both sides). Secondly, I think taking the bible literally is also futile. I dislike religious people who pick and choose which bits of their respective religions they adopt and which bits they ignore, as this shows bible teachings to be incompatible with ever-changing contemporary ethics.

 

E.g I have a few mates who would say they have a faith, but they also want gay clergy, abortions, and other human rights that religious groups do not allow. So my argument to them is always this: why not believe in your own ethics and morals, why does it have to come under the banner of 'faith'.

 

However, I think the bible/qu'ran/Torah etc has offered some very positive ideas to humanity, irrespective of the fundamentalist distortions manifesting themselves in war/corruption/bigotry, and the research done into how 'good natured' mammals are by default.

 

So my own personal beliefs are not tied to a specific religion or deity (which one is the right one?), but in things like community, helping my fellow man and always trying to 'do the right thing'. Whether or not that has been shaped by childhood exposure to religion (or by my parents exposure to religion) its impossible to say.

What sort of shit goes down in HellGF?

 

Noos gets injected with supercharged viagra and is forced to watch while his daughter's friends kiss naked on a bed, but everytime he tries to jump on the bed it moves up a bit and he falls flat on the floor - propped up only by his knob. He does this again, and again and again.

Anonymous passive-aggressive criticism of other people's opinions certainly prevents you from having to stick your neck on the line and express your own opinions though. Hey, I'm just trying to discuss stuff in a calm and reasonable way, and barring one or two genuinely odious people on here, I think that's entirely possible. I merely want to try and understand why people believe what they do. For example, I am interested in knowing what fortuitous happenings in the history of the Earth you're referring to.
