Liverpool 2 Brentford 0 (Aug 25 2024)

    matchreportheader.jpg

That was weird. The whole experience was weird, from start to finish. Not so much the game or the performance, but Anfield. It kind of felt like a friendly game at times as it was deathly quiet other than the low murmur of thousands of conversations going on. It’s not what I expected for the first game of the season, and I actually felt a little embarrassed by it.

The reason I say that is because all summer Arne Slot has been getting asked about how excited he is for his first game at Anfield, and everyone has been begging up the atmosphere and telling him how special it is. And then THAT is what was served up? He said last week how the Ipswich crowd were really loud but there is only 30 thousand of them so he’s looking forward to hearing how loud 60 thousand at Anfield can be. The answer was ‘yeah not very loud at all’.

I’ve seen it argued that the flat atmosphere was because of the new style of play and how it isn’t as exciting as Klopp’s football. I don’t buy that though. In a few months maybe we can say that, but this was the first home game under a new manager. Fans didn’t show up thinking “this is going to be dull”. Admittedly, I thought at times it was a bit, but not unusually so. We had loads of spells in games under Jurgen where fuck all was happening and the tempo was too slow.

The crowd were quiet right from the off and never really got going at all, even in the second half when we had a spell of incredible football. And at full time it was really weird as nobody seemed to know what to do. I actually understand that though, usually we all take our lead from Klopp as he marches onto the pitch hugging his players before making his way to the KOP. So we had a routine there, and now that’s gone. There were applause at the final whistle and then an eery quiet as everyone stopped clapping and stood there not really knowing what to do. Eventually Slot applauded the Kop and it was reciprocated, and we all went home. I did notice though that the stadium emptied far quicker at full time than it usually does, which was in keeping with the apathy that was there throughout the game.

The thing is, it’s not really justified at all because we’ve had a great pre-season and we’ve started with two wins, two clean sheets, some great football and none of the drama we seemed to have most weeks last season where we would need last minute winners or we’d have to come from behind after conceding first time and time again. There’s been none of that, the only drama we’ve had is from Trent being a whiny little fucking bitch. I’ll get to that in due course.

I’m hoping that this was just a case of it feeling a bit awkward and fans not really knowing how to react. Klopp was here for so long and now he isn’t. Fans often took their lead from him and now he’s not there on the touchline, applauding players making tackles or producing some good football that led to chance. He was always there, applauding above his head and looking to the crowd to do the same thing. We shouldn’t need that, but maybe we’ve forgotten how to do it ourselves.

A couple of times in the first half we produced some lovely football that almost resulted in us getting in on goal, and I looked down to the touchline where usually Klopp would have been there, hands above his head applauding as he walked back towards the bench. Slot wasn’t doing that, which is fine. If that’s not how he naturally behaves he shouldn’t do it. He’s not here to be Jurgen Klopp, he’s here to do things his own way. He’s not going to be whipping the crowd up though, that’s clear. Not yet anyway, maybe later down the road when he feels like he’s earned the right we might see it, but for now the Kop needs to take care of business on their own.

It’s a shame because so far I think he’s done a fucking brilliant job. It’s not easy replacing such an iconic figure, and he’s going to run into some problems any time he makes a decision a player doesn’t like (again, Trent, but as I say I’ll get to it) because he’s the step dad who has come in after mum and dad went their separate ways. He has to tread carefully to some extent as he can’t start throwing his weight around immediately, but what I’ve seen so far tells me he’s not going to be a soft touch and anyone who crosses him will be sorry because he won’t pussy foot around it.

I hope he calls Trent in and tells him “you only get one of those, I’ll let it slide this time but if you ever do that again you won’t start the next game and I don’t give a fuck who you are or what your contract situation is”. Again though, I’ll get there in a bit, I promise.

Well said on Trent.

It was an emphatic finish from Diaz though! He really put his foot through it and it was practically past the keeper before he could react.

You should probably leave the finishing analysis to the experts.

He did put his foot through it, but its not a high percentage option as they usually hit the keeper. Just ask Darwin.

He was really unlucky with the one in the 2nd half though. Went for the corner and it's a brilliant save.

Of all the teams in the Premier League, Brentford is probably the one we have the most "irrelevant" and unexciting history with.

That may have explained some of the apathy?

And Trent might not just be selfish, but also maybe a little thick.

You've got to be smarter than to react like that when you're a vice-captain.

Maybe he's not.

The Anfield atmosphere is increasingly becoming a bit of a myth. Well it is for what are seen as run of the mill league games anyway - games where we are expected to win and ganes where the result never ends up in any real doubt - and it isn't a new thing either, it was same back in the 80's and through the following decades.

When I saw that interview with Slot where he talked about the noise from 30,000 at Ipswich and then what 60,000 at Anfield will be like, I just sat there thinking "You are going to be disappointed, lad"...

It is of course for the big games/occasions and the big european nights in particular or when we really need something, or feel an injustice or have been narked a thing, then it appears and it is a very real and powerful thing - although I do feel it is lessening in terms of how often it is a thing and how powerful a thing it is when it is a thing - but that is another argument for another day.

“Straight at the keeper” though Dave? Give over, he got a little finger to it as it flew past him.

The atmosphere is probably a mix of things, with the modern make up of the crowd, the opposition involved , the annoyance at FSG lack of activity and maybe the lack of jeopardy for fans whose captain has only lost 2 of his 100 home games.

Citeh and the Arse both play passes that often appear to exist only for their own sake. We rarely did that under the previous regime. Now, we seem to be moving in that direction. I cite the exchange in the second half between Szob and AliMac(?) who played 4 or 5 passes between them as they stood a couple of yards apart, as evidence. That and wall passes is the change I’m detecting but is as much as I’m qualified to report.

Trent looked my 9 year old Grandson when he gets told off.

Game was a bit boring at times interlaced with some stunning moves but never seen a bad game when we win.

The ping pong passes back and forth between players when your 2 goals up and the time remaining is less than a quarter of a match is good game management and runs the clock down making a comeback less and less likely

Great report and well done for laying into Trent, I hope the cunt reads the report to understand what we think of him.

Except this bit...

"We should twat them but I am not predicting it" - FFS.

I thought it was a decent finish from Diaz, moved across the keeper to create the angle rather than run in a straight line and then put his foot through it

Was the most boring piece of action all game, saw enough of that last season.

Dunno about the atmosphere thing but I've been experiencing something abit akin to grief when thinking about Klopp, and I wasn't even as much of a fan of his as some, nor am I as in to footy these days as some, but it's just odd to see a manager leave at the peak of his popularity, usually by the time they go you want them gone. I'm backing Slot and hope he does well, but it just feels strange having someone in there who's not Klopp.

I wasn’t at the game so can’t comment from personal experience, but I will say that the atmosphere at Anfield has been far, far, far below its previous heights over the two seasons prior to this one. We mentioned it on the pod most weeks last season.

Fans start well as the game starts getting behind the lads, after 5 mins 10 mins we are reactive, great play, a chance, a bad foul, shit reffing, goals, we are reactive to the pitch. When the play is passive game management you can hear the players. This is why no atmosphere at the Emptihad

Old Trafford and Woodison it's anger and resentment at what they see on the pitch. How many times did Klopp have a go at the crowd? Plenty so it wasn't all noise and intimidation with him.

It feels odd, Slot in a way distancing himself from the fans, players first... its all different but

Keep this up, give us a title challenge that won't fizzle out? Then hear the noise...

I understand what you wrote about Trent and you’re right but I still believe it was awkward from Slot. You knew what would happen right after the substitution. It was obvious, You don’t sub one of you senior player twice in a row nowadays. Slot has to be smarter. Especially regarding the contract situation. I though it was poor from him.

He did not give Eliott much time after after not playing at all last week. What happened to Jones, was He injured ?

We just watched 2 weird games indeed. There may have been great football but it was boring as well. Maybe I am being harsh as I miss Klopp.

Players can sulk all they want as long as they perform.  There's a long history of sulky bastard players in every team.  As long as they don't do a Torres and down tools, I'm ok with it.  It says more about them than anything else.

I'm not surprised the atmosphere was flat.

Has the arrival of a new manager...ahem coach ever been so unheralded and low key? For whatever the reason the club has decided to play down Slot as the new man at the helm, they didn't even put him on the front of the match day programme. Rather strange. Coupled with the lack of new signings to create a buzz, and perhaps a dawning realisation of the extent of FSGs lack of ambition, there was nothing in the build up to generate a bit of excitement.

Slot has a real job on his hands.

He's generally regarded by the players as the most intelligent lad in the squad, he's definitely not thick.
