PODCAST: Brentford 3 Liverpool 1 - Match Reaction

Calamitous in defence and sterile in attack. 2023 got off to a miserable start for the Reds as they were deservedly beaten by Brentford and missed the chance to leapfrog Spurs in the race for a top four spot.

TLW Editor Dave Usher tries to make sense of it with John Gallagher and Julian Richards. So much for 'Happy New Year'.

Not at the halfway stage yet but the two Manchester clubs and Arsenal looking most likely to make up the top 3. Then the rest of us in a battle for fourth.

Spurs lost 11 times last season and finished 4th so its not farfetched that we make the top four. Every time I see Chelsea and Spurs they look woeful. Not sure if people realise how bad they are performing. If our home form collapses we have no chance though. We are 3rd for home form overall and our away form is similar to Everton this is with us actually winning our last two aways.

Sit deeper, full backs stay back, midfield sit deeper, cut off the route one shit that tears us a new arsehole every single game and make the opposition have to rethink their game plan. We need to build from the back. Everybody bombing forward isn't even helping us attack its just closing more spaces further up the pitch and creating loads of spaces behind us. How many times are we going to walk into this jab. I just dont think we can turn a switch and go back to Klopps way of playing it needs to be relearnt, we need to solidify, conceding first is becoming a fucking psychological issue.

With regards to the corners, I am not sure whether it was mentioned on the telly, but Brentford went proper shit or bust on the corners. They loaded our box with everyone of their players and then 2 stepped out to the edge of the box leaving nobody back at all. I've never seen a side do that against us before.

I said at the time with the way that we set up, if we can manage the first contact or to clear one Mo would have been away. It was proper risk versus reward stuff on their part and they got all of the rewards. They definitely did a number on us on them.

We need to defend first and try to control the games somehow and try catch teams out on the break. Being so open is killing us. Go into games with the sole intention of not conceding first and work from there.

Hope this helps.

Not in Klopp's nature.

Dave - you are fucking dreaming if you think this team will finish top 4.

everyone said that two years ago and we finished third. I know how flawed we are, but I also know that the teams we're competing with aren't any good either.

Just want to say thanks for churning these pods out. I don't agree with everything that is said but god am I sick of having to listen to The Anfield Wrap alone.

I know the pods have stopped and started in the past, hopefully we can churn them out somewhat consistently because I think a less commercially-minded pod for LFC would be welcomed by all. TAW, Redmen TV, everything feels like its part of some grand business venture as opposed to being a raw and down-the-middle assessment of things.

Only suggestion is to have some contrasting views for some hearty discussion and even more non-match reaction pods.

What we could do before isn't or can't work now.. Time to go back to basics and regroup but it's going to take time, there's no other way really.

Hear hear.

Taking the dog for a walk and desperate for some pod action on after the final whistle yesterday I downloaded TAW's post-match pint. That little lad Josh Sexton offered that Elliott has arguably been our "player of the season" while a few minutes later a female described Ox as "absolutely amazing."

Suffice to say, the pod was not completed.

We are trying to play Jurgen Klopp football without Jurgen Klopp footballers and until we either get some more Jurgen Klopp footballers (particularly in midfield) or change the way we are set up, days like yesterday are going to continue to happen more often than any of us want them to.

Seconded. It's my favourite pod. You'd think it'd be a bit depressing at the minute, but it's always entertaining ("Freddie Mercury - he's dead.")

I do listen to the Anfield Wrap, but they're often pretty smug. There are one or two realists but they usually get talked down.

Those two opinions on a football podcast should mean an instant dismissal.

Either that or Klopp is prepared to take a calculated risk, that we'll win enough games to finish in the top 4 without a change of system.

We don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water.

So firstly, I appreciate the kind words and the feedback, nice one for that.

Regarding the above, it's the logistics of it. It's difficult enough organising who's coming on the pod when it's a group of mates all in a whatsapp chat. Having random reds we don't really know is not only tricky to arrange but you also lose the chemistry and rapport we have because we know eachother. It wouldn't have the same feel to it.

As for more pods, in theory it's a good idea but we're basically playing twice a week most of the time so there's not much time to do it, plus you need time between each episode to let it breathe and for people to listen. The numbers are usually way down when there's a quick turnaround, so ideally it needs at least three or four days between episodes.

We should have done more during the WC break and over the summer though, but that's on me really as I do the editing and it can be a pain in the arse, so when there's a chance for a break I tend to just enjoy the time away from it.

Coming up with ideas for non-match reaction pods is tricky too. It's easy when there's something to talk about, like a new signing for example, but we don't really want to be forcing it and putting out something that people aren't really interested in.

Everyone eventually folds to the dollar. As sounds as the lads all are they would become smug cunts too over time if this made them all rich. No offence intended, its just the way of the world, there would be break away Pods and contributers calling out each other in twitter rants. There would be TLW America and TLW Wales set up within weeks, all them scrambling around for Brownies signature.

Not having that, the only one whose loyalty I'd question would be Monty. Everyone else would stay loyal and not let it go to their heads. There's no DT or Troopz in this crew.

Monty would be off to whatever stats based pod offered him a big enough platform to express himself. He wouldn't do it for the money though, that's not how he rolls. It's purely an ego thing for Stu.

The rest of the team are solid. If we did start to make a few quid we'd use it to get better recording equipment for the lads. There's only me and Chris who have decent mics and proper headphones.

We did get a sponsorship offer from Manscape but turned it down as they wanted us to talk on the pod about shaving our balls and arse cracks and that. They weren't offering cash either, just shaving gear.

Terry was up for it, he's not averse to discussing his balls on the pod.

Excuse me, I have an excellent mic and audio setup thank you very much. The pod only sounds good now because of me as well, I am absolutely indispensable (if anyone from TAW is reading this, call me yeah?)
