By rights we should be able to afford him as we have done well enough in the Champions League and League in recent years to have generated the cash and have also just announced a record turnover, it is just a shame that the parasites have lumbered us in so much debt.

There is also the small matter of the wage bill though...

Im just thinking now, but if Alonso is set on leaving, and we get 30 to 40 mill for him, we could possibly buy Villa, move Gerrard back into CM with Masch, and stick Villa up front into the hole.

Personally I'd rather see Alonso stay though.

Prem: Valencia director talks Villa | Setanta

Valencia confirm offer from 'a club abroad'

Valencia’s sporting director Fernando Gomez has revealed the club have been approached by a side outside of Spain for David Villa.

Villa is the reported target of both Manchester United and Real Madrid, but Los Ches are desperate to hold onto the Spanish hotshot.

Tuesday morning reports had United linked with a £40 million bid for Villa as Sir Alex Ferguson looks to splash the cash generated by the imminent sale of Cristiano Ronaldo, while Liverpool have also been linked after Fernando Torres urged the club to sign his compatriot.

Gomez would not specify who had made an approach for Villa, but he warned English sides to up their offers if they are to lure the striker.

"There are two things that need to be cleared up. First, Valencia have not reached an agreement with anybody for Villa,” Gomez said in the Spanish press.

“Second, as of right now, there have been no offers that have satisfied us.

"There have been clubs abroad who are interested and they have made their bids, but the player prefers to remain at Valencia.

"In any case, it will be up to the president Manuel Llorente and the council to decide whether or not he leaves and determine what transfer fee is satisfactory.

It's us iom telling you yanks are gonna fund it i'm gonna put money on it tomorrow.

Valencia can play hardball as much as they want, they need the cash badly and if they distance everyone from Villa price-wise, it will be reeled back a bit

I don't see anyone (including United) going as over-board as they seem to want.

Not to say a high price won't be reached.....but i keep reading these articles feeling as if Valencia wants a Kaka type bid
