Some great choices on here with movies I had forgotten about, must mention Sophies Choice, with the gut wrenching choice scene, excellent acting from Meryl Streep, the guy who played the nazi, and even the bit the kids did, particularly the little girl.

he had that ability alcoholics have of being pissed, but having it under control, and seeming soberish, excellent acting.

He stayed in a village in the west of Ireland for few months, got pissed every night in the local pub and taped himself when he got back to the house he was staying in. One of the best portrayals ever of a sober man trying to act drunk, trying to act sober. A super performance and compared to most of Cage's since, a miracle!
