You're obviously saying that with ridiculing connotations, but are you trying to say that people's opinions of a player can't change in a year?

A year is a massive amount of time in football.

Agreed. I didn't contribute to this thread but anybody that doesn't reevaluate their opinion in light of fresh evidence is either stubborn or a divvy.

It's a huge fee and a bit of a gamble because of that but overall i'd be really happy if we signed Johnson.

I think he's come on leaps and bounds in the last 12-18 months. He is really good going forward, athletic, puts a good cross in, can score goals and is quick.

He needs to improve defensively but I think he's equal to Arbeloa in that sense and certainly much better going forward.

As long as we sign a top class wide player, then i'm delighted with this signing (if it happens).

Yes to that, he would improve us a lot going forward and Kuyt is there to help with the defensive duties.

The price is OTT but what do you do, too often we have missed out on targets over the price and it is maybe time to pay the price.

So a top class wide player and both flanks would be improved, exactly what we have been calling for.

Fingers crossed we have the money for the wide player but I feel we have.

Liverpool poised to sign Johnson

By Phil McNulty

Glen Johnson

Johnson is set to quit Pompey for Anfield

'Liverpool look to have won the race to sign England defender Glen Johnson after agreeing a fee in the region of £17m with Portsmouth.

Reds' boss Rafael Benitez is confident he has beaten off interest from Chelsea in the 24-year-old and expects to make him his first summer signing.

Manchester City had also registered an interest in Johnson, but it is believed Anfield is his preferred destination.

Benitez is now likely to sell Andrea Dossena to help fund the deal.

Johnson, who joined Portsmouth from Chelsea in a £4m deal two years ago, emerged as Benitez's prime target after having an outstanding season at Fratton Park last season.

Benitez is working within financial restrictions in the transfer market this summer, but it is understood Liverpool are still owed money from the deal that took Peter Crouch to Portsmouth last summer.

Spanish defender Alvaro Arbeloa could also be sacrificed to raise cash towards the Johnson deal, with Real Madrid being linked with an £8m move.

He has cemented a place as England's first-choice right-back under coach Fabio Capello and played in the two recent World Cup qualifying victories against Kazakhstan and Andorra.

Johnson signed a new four-year deal at Portsmouth in January, but club officials accepted they could not stand in his way if he was offered the opportunity to move a club playing in the Champions League.'

Remember they still owe us £7 million from the crouch deal so really its only £10 million

Good point Brownie, but we can't buy players on the back of one good season can we? We bought Tottenham's player of the year last summer, and I think Dosenna was also his teams player of the year. I like Johnson but I have major doubts about his ability to defend so welcome him with caution.

People are saying he's titus bramble in disguise, hes nothing fucking like him. he'll be a quality player for us, and i cant believe some people are slagging him off before he's even kicked a ball for us!!

Say what you like about "Arry" but he has made Pompey millions and probably has a minus net spend there when you consider the sums Muntary, Diarra and now Johnson have fetched to name but 3. He has spent loads at Tottenham but instantly improved them. Gets some unfair stick does Redknapp. That Steve Bruce is also pretty ace at spotting and improving unknown or fallen footballers and then selling for huge amounts.
