On loan Italian striker Fabio Borini has been given a ringing endorsement by Sunderland boss Gus Poyet who claims that "any manager would like to have him in his team".
Borini joined the Black Cats on a season long loan after struggling in his first season at Anfield following a £10m move from Roma in the summer of 2012, but he has proved to be a real hit at the Stadium of Light, helping the Mackems reach the Capital One Cup Final as well as scoring in both North East derby games against arch rivals Newcastle United.
Poyet is delighted with the impact the young frontman has made and was effusive in his praise in an interview with the Shields Gazette. “What a good character Fabio is." said the Uruguayan. “He’s a character that any manager would like to have in his team. At the beginning, I remember when I played him and then I couldn’t play him. I didn’t have words to explain why he wasn’t playing. But he’s a very special character that would be in any XI in any team.”
Borini was substituted after just 12 minutes of Sunderland's home defeat to Hull City at the weekend as the early dismissal of Wes Brown forced Poyet to sacrifice the Italian in a tactical reshuffle. That prevented Borini from building on his outstanding display in Sunderland's 3-0 win over Newcastle the previous weekend, a performance that had Poyet purring. “Mama-mia, he had an unbelievable game the other day in the derby.”
“He fights to take penalties and the runs he was making on (Mathieu) Debuchy were amazing. He was really a top performer and he’s always ready to play, ready to train. If he’s got some pain, he doesn’t care, he just wants to play and score goals.”
What do you think? Does Borini still have a future at Anfield or should the Reds be looking to cash in on him this summer whilst his stock is high?
