That was the Week that Was (Jul 15-20 2024)

    image.jpeg

Monday Jul 15:

The inquest into England’s failure begins. As you’d expect, the Athletic - bless them - have done the whole deep dive “inside England’s Euros disappointment” thing and much of their focus is on Bellingham being unpopular with the rest of the squad. It’s all pretty tenuous “sources say” “some players believe” etc but honestly I reckon it’s probably even worse than they’re reporting. Bellingham gives off that Ronaldo stink even though he hasn’t achieved anywhere near as much as Ronaldo achieved. Ronaldo earned the right to be a bellend.

Of course you can choose not to be one, as Messi has for the most part, but the point is when you’ve done everything Ronaldo has, if you want to act like a prima donna “I’m better than all of you plebs” type of knobhead, you’ve earned the right to. Bellingham hasn’t, but he seems like an absolute cock. The claim is that some players didn’t like the “who else?” celebration while others aren’t happy that he took up a position in the leadership group and then just refused to do press duties, leaving it to the likes of Palmer and Gordon etc

I’m mindful of going in too hard on Bellingham because he’s still a kid really. We judge these lads to a high standard of behaviour when they’re still maturing and learning. Bellingham seems very mature but he is still a kid, and some of the things he’s said and done that have annoyed me are probably not that big of a deal and can be put down to his age. That being said, if the lads who are around him all the time think he’s a knobhead then he probably is. It seems like Trent is his only mate in the squad, which makes me worry a bit about Trent's judgement. His best mates are Hendo, Bellingham, Ramsdale and Robbo. If it wasn't for Robbo I'd be seriously questioning his taste in friends.

I have never watched that Jude Bellingham play a game of football.  But I hate him.

I should probably be a little less relaxed about that fact than I actually am.

And thanks for clarifying Macca wasn't on that Argentina bus - such a blessing.

The mistake with Leny Yoro is that we leaked that we were interested, but expected him to go to Madrid, yet now he's at Man United.

We keep claiming to be interested in the likes of Mbappe and Bellingham, and it's sort of understandable that they end up at Madrid, but when this version of Man United are signing players ahead of us it's inevitably going to piss people off.

As you say, United have massively overpaid for him though and he will be under a lot of pressure to hit the ground running.

I think part of the anger is because we haven't signed anyone. If it had been last summer I think fans would have been more understanding, a bit like when United 'beat us' to the signing of Mason Mount.

You say German clubs are not involved with racist stuff, Dave, but wasn't there a story on the eve of the Euros that over 20% of the public voted that they would prefer less black players in the national team , so there are obviously undercurrents there.

No data to support this, but I’d imagine about 20% to be the number of racists in most countries.

None of that is relevant though. Not unless people want us to match what United are throwing at him.

I agree that the reaction is way worse because we haven't signed anyone, but throwing toys out of the pram over a kid who wouldn't even be playing is ridiculous.

Watching the Mancs make complete fools of themselves in the transfer market is one of the highlights of the window. Why the fuck would we want to copy them?

I'm always sceptical over stuff like that. Who was polled? Was it put to an actual vote or is it a small sample size used? No doubt Germany has its racist dickheads, as does everywhere else, but I'd be surprised if any of them were playing in multicultural German youth footy teams and throwing the 'N' word around at opposing players.

If we were playing an Eastern European side or even a Spanish one, places where this kind of thing has happened too frequently, I'd be less likely to be giving the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, there’s a lengthy interview with Trent by the Mirror and he’s really impressive in how he dealt with all of the questions. He said exactly what he should be saying but at least half of it was him lying his arse off. Especially the bigging up of Southgate, which I don’t believe for a second. He was asked how he felt when he heard that Southgate had quit and he actually said “similar to how I felt when my club manager announced it”. Get. The. Fuck. Outta. Here.

So he didn't give a fuck about Klopp leaving either. Little shit.

Kept referring to him as "my club manager" as it was very much an England based interview.

That Leny Yoro deal reminds me of them signing Anthony Martial. Young player, looks a very promising prospect, looked at by all the big names but probably with an eye on seeing how he develops over the next couple of years, but the Mancs go steaming in there paying a ridiculous fee that nobody else would dream of, giving the player huge wages for someone so young. Bringing a player like that into a club that isn’t especially stable is just the wrong environment to get them to flourish. He might be boss, but equally it might not work out, and it’s a lot of money to pay for such a risk.

And he looks like a giraffe or a camel in human form, so that’s another reason to be not arsed.

I don’t much about York apart what I read in l’Equipe but you can’t compare him to Martial who was not as bigged up. The right comparaison would be Varane.

I saw him play live vs Brest last year, he was very good for such good player. The fee is insane though ….

What the Argentinian have done is disgusting, it’s plain racism, I can’t understand  how anyone can see it differently, it’s sickening really.

Maybe they did not intend it, maybe they were drunk, I don’t know, but you can not tolerate what was done. It’s a fee card to open racism ….

It seems like virtually the whole of Argentina sees it differently. I read something about a government minister speaking out against it and the backlash was so bad they resigned the next day. I also saw when Enzo went back to River Plate and was introduced on the pitch, the entire stadium was singing that song in solidarity with him.

It's kind of like how Mac Allister described it. In Europe most of us are like "nah, that's racist, you can't be singing that shit" while in South America (specifically Argentina in this case) they're scratching their heads wondering what the fuss is all about. Maybe if there were some black Argentinians left they could explain it to the rest of them, but apparently they've all gone to live in other countries (can't think why!)

It definitely needs explaining to them, because Enzo thought it was ok to video himself singing it and live stream it to the world! If he thought he was being racist he wouldn't have done that and brought down this shitstorm on himself.

That Chelsea dressing room might be fractured beyond repair, as the French lads in there (plus others I would guess) are rightly going to have a big problem with him, and a comic sans apology isn't going to pacify them.

Nah, I don’t subscribe to this relativism. That’s bad, really bad.

People are getting mad down here. Obviously it’s a hot issue in France right now with Le Pen and co.

I had the chance to be at the stade de France yesterday for 7 a-team rugby. France was playing Argentina, the stadium was electric and you could see the French players had an extra motivation to beat Argentina. It was like winning a World Cup, even for me who don’t care about rugby and who’s not very patriotic.

I agree with you!

I'm not justifying the chant or the players singing it. You said you can't understand how anyone sees it differently and I was saying that it seems like pretty much the whole of Argentina does and therefore they need educating about it. Not everyone singing that song is some evil nazi, a lot of them are just a bit thick and need it explaining to them.

Not just the racism part either, the stuff about Mbappe is not something I'd expect professional footballers to be singing either. But then after what that tit goalkeeper did, mocking Mbappe after they won the world cup, it's perhaps not that surprising.
