Anubis, you're a gent.

The other thing that sticks in my mind from his first effort at 'remastering' them was the dreadful added scene in the hanger on Tatooine where Han steps on Jabba's tail.

Why? Just why?

The Red Letter Media review makes a great point about Lucas's constant meddling. He's used CGI to insert loads of 'wacky' droids and shit into the background of Mos Eisley, essentially turning it from the Widnes of the universe into a reasonably bustling place. Utterly pointless. The Jabba scene basically depicts him as a reasonably affable chap too. Shite.

The added Jabba scene goes against what a writer is taught. It's superfluous. The scene with Han and Guido is enough to establish that he'd lost Jabba's goods in an Imperial inspection and owes Jabba money he doesn't have. It also keeps Jabba himself as a mystery so that we have a great reveal at the beginning of Return Of The Jedi.

I assume people have told you you're a geek?

In relation to fleshing out his story, I don't really remember the dialogue - just some fairly awful CGI and Han standing on his tail...

I guess but not hardcore geek, just a Star Wars fan. I don't know a millionth of what some freaks know about it.

Well, yes. But the point of adding extra scenes (apart from making money, obviously) is to give fans of the saga something new, not to preserve the status quo for people who feel precious about these things.

The scenes are not added for a new generation of fans, so it means nothing in reality. Inevitably new fans will always emerge but they have the choice, they can watch the originals or watch them as how Lucas intended the story to be.

I agree with that mate but I don't think that's the reason he did it, I think he did it because he's genueinley obsessed with CGI, which he uses like a sledgehammer. I think he just buzzed off the idea of making Jabba 'live' in the original using computers, the same reason he put loads of shit in the backgrounds of those scenes that just weren't needed. Even where Han is chasing the Stormtroopers and, instead of coming across a wall, they come across a room full of troops, looks like it was just done because he 'could', in terms of humour/drama it was vastly inferior.

There is some decent material knocking around which he left out in the first release (I've always really liked the Anchorhead scenes, especially with Biggs, that does genuinley give some exposition to the whole rebellion, the reasons for fighting, what The Emperor is up to etc) but I can see why it wasn't included, it probably slows the story down.

A film should be treated as a historical document. The original Star Wars was a testament to its time and Lucas's original intention - to provide wholesome, escapist material for 9-13 year olds - and should have been left well alone.

I don't mind different cuts or even additions, but only if the originals are still available! It's the lack of choice that is such a "fuck you".

It's all part of the scam though, I'll be queueing with all the other mugs when the ltd ed blu-ray box set 1-6 including theatrical versions and clone wars cartoon comes out for £120 a pop... and the joke will be on me because I'll have bought the shitty ones as well, further confirming to George that the endeavour was actually a great success because the numbers don't lie.

I genuinely worry about my Star Wars DVDs. They're not the original versions, they're about eight-ten years old, but I'd fucking shit if I was forced to watch 'Nooooooooooooo!' in Jedi, I'd absolutely fucking cry.

Haha, scrap that just gone and bought them used... crumbled totally thanks to Bad Dad.

At least George doesn't get a second slice of the cash.

Kind of excited actually, haven't watched them in years. Going to nerd out... even more than normal.

I only found out about the Han shoots first thing a few years ago. I uses think to myself how the fuck did greedo miss. When I found out I felt like I'd been raped. It's those small things that people watching miss out. Han shooting first is such a vital thing when I think about it now. It shows he was cut throat and makes his changing is more important.

Safe to say I went on a Wikipedia binge. There's whole pages set up about all the minor things that have been changed on various releases down the years. This did lead me on to reading the books though so I'm glad for that. Grand Admiral Thrawn is a fucking brilliant character and those books would have been great as films. I've been reading I, Jedi which is supposed to be the best book but it's just been a let down for me and I've read all the xwing series to prepare me for it too.

Has anyone else read many of the books?

Fuck Wikipedia, get on Wookiepedia.

Oh and I agree the Mos Eisley Jabba scene is shit. Not as shit as Jabba being human with a big furry coat as originally filmed.

I wish Lucas would stop Fucking around with them.

hold on just one fucking second! the Jabba scene in a New Hope isn't original?! I first saw the films in the mid 90s and always assumed they were the originals and he didn't start pissing around with them till the noughties when he put things in like changing the Anakin ghost to Hayden Christensen

I need to lie down

Some of the stuff he changed was just mindblowing. The angle of the Hoth battle is reversed - the AT-ATs come from the right instead of the left (?) but, criminally, he's splashed 'exciting music' over it, so that eerie, truly iconic moment moment when the Rebel looks through his fieldglasses, we see the ghostly outline of the AT-At for the first time and just hear 'clank-clank, clank-clank' has been ruined.

It's like Lucas has been taken over by that evil version of Sam Becket from Quantum Leap, the bird who worked for the devil and used to leap into people's lives just to ruin them.

There are quite a few preservations of the original Star Wars films knocking around if you want to see how the films used to be and not have the gimped poor quality transfers that were released a couple of years back.

If you're interested then this forum Star Wars Preservations and Other Fan Projects - originaltrilogy.com forum

is a good place to start especially the Harmy despecialised editions.

There are also fan edits here

Star Wars Fan Edits - originaltrilogy.com forum

The best one to start with is the Adywan Episode IV Revisited edit, he's gone in and fixed loads of errors in terms of continuity and stuff. He's working on a version TESB at the minute that sounds really good.

Good work. I should have known some nerd collective somewhere would be all over that shit.

There should be a "Han Shoots First" website, to host all the great things that have been remade or changed or fucked about with - to general ruination - so that legions of murderous, outraged nerds can post everything wrong about the remake/ change/ tweak/ film version/ cover version and hopefully not embark on a killing spree or something.

I'd start with the film version of "I Am Legend".

Fuck me. You total bunch of sci-fi-classic-ruining cunts.

EDIT: There already is a hanshootsfirst.org.

Obv.
