I don't think this has been posted yet, but FIFA released the national team captains' and coaches' top 3 rankings for the FIFA player of the year. It's a bit interesting. Most of the voters have put some combination of Messi/Xavi/C.Ronaldo in their top 3. Here are some funny/wacky votes:

Sami Hyypia (Finland):

1. Fernando Torres (Sami's great)

2. Lionel Messi

3. Carles Puyol

John Terry (England)

1. Didier Drogba

2. Michael Ballack.....f*** off Terry you idiot.

3. Andres Iniesta

Yossi Benayoun (Israel)

1. Steven Gerrard

2. Lionel Messi

3. Fernando Torres

Fabio Capello (England)

1. Lionel Messi

2. Fernando Torres

3. Gianluigi Buffon

Diego Armando Maradona (Argentina)

1. Didier Drogba

2. Wayne Rooney

3. Zlatan

Diego "nicky butt was best player at the world cup" Maradonna clearly knows absolutely FUCK ALL about football.

Pretty sure that was Pele who said that. At least Maradonna could have said he was off his nut if he said it.

Mongo picking Ballack as the 2nd best player in the world is laughable.

Ballack's only votes came from Yasser Al-Qahtami (Saudi Arabia), Chathura Maduranga (Sri Lanka), Junior Michael (Samoa), Dick Advocaat (Belgium...had Ballack as #1!?), Berti Vogts (Azerbaijan), Tom Sanfiet (Namibia), Tunoa Liu (Samoa, coach), Sampath Perera (Sri Lanka, coach), and John Terry (England)

Messi.

FifPro World team of the year:

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas (Spain/Real Madrid)

Defence: Dani Alves (Brazil/Barcelona), Nemanja Vidic (Serbia/Manchester United), John Terry (England/Chelsea) and Patrice Evra (France/Manchester United)

Midfield: Andres Iniesta (Spain/Barcelona), Xavi (Spain/Barcelona) and Steven Gerrard (England/Liverpool)

Attack: Fernando Torres (Spain/Liverpool), Lionel Messi (Argentina/Barcelona), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal/Manchester United/Real Madrid).

BBC Sport - Football - Lionel Messi wins Fifa World Player of the Year award

Barcelona star Lionel Messi has been named Fifa World Footballer of the Year to complete a stunning 2009 for the Argentine forward.

The 22-year-old, who helped Barca win the Club World Cup on Saturday - their sixth trophy of the year - also won the Ballon d'Or award this year.

"A magnificent year for me and Barca has ended in the best way," said Messi.

He beat off competition from last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, Kaka and Andres Iniesta.

How does Kaka make it into the top 5 in the world and not into the team of the year? What exactly is his position and who took his place in that team?
