Yeah at the time he was looked at as the big new European prospect. He was only 26 but never seemed to recover. Another sad story is John Hathaway who looked a even better prospect, beat Diego Sanchez but he has Crohns disease which ended his career in the end

Sometimes one fight is all it takes to derail a career, it seems. Weidman's never really been the same since he took that hellacious beating at UFC 194 thanks to Herb's dithering (you could also argue that Romero taking his head off in his next fight didn't help, either, but the Rockhold match seemed to be the turning point).

And then you have fighters like Overeem who must have taken more damage than pretty much any other fighter in the sport and yet they're still somewhat competitive. I guess styles also play a big part - and a willingness to adapt as necessary - as well as competitiveness of the respective weight class. They've certainly been key to Overeem's longevity, I think.

Weidman was chatting the other day about he has the game and would batter Izzy. Romero and Rock hold did more damage than we thought

Oh yeah he's still absolutely convinced he can be champion again, the daft bastard. Suppose that kind of totally unshakable self confidence is a pre-requisite of being a fighter, though.

Also even if he has doubts, he has to sell himself in the modern fight game. When everyone is bigging themselves up WWE style, the bare minimum is saying you believe you can beat anyone.

Yeah maybe a bit of that going on, too.

Class performance. If Volkanovski connects though I think it's lights out but Volkanvski is going to struggle to close the distance.

I think Volkanovski beats him comfortably. Ortega looked better but the Korean Zombie was poor.
