Report: Karius vows to stay at Liverpool and fight for his future

Loris Karius is willing to stay at Liverpool while being firm in the knowledge that he will be in the backup role to Alisson.

The German keeper has had a tortuous last few years of his career, most notably his calamitous performance in the 2018 Champions League Final and his poor form continued when he was sent on loan to Turkish club Besiktas.

If that wasn’t bad enough, Karius then was engaged in a wage dispute with his on-loan club claiming that he had not been paid since the Super Lig season had been halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This led Karius to report Besiktas to FIFA on two separate occasions and eventually led him to cancel his contract and return to his parent club.

In the aftermath, Karius has been open about his experience and looking forward to the next step of his career.

He has been linked to clubs in his homeland with Hertha Berlin being one team mentioned.

However the gloveman also realises that he has to be a pragmatist in these uncertain times and if there is no guarantee of first team opportunities at another club, there is no harm at staying at one of the top teams in world football.

The Daily Mail(via transfermarkt) reported Karius as saying:

“Of course I have to play if I am going to change clubs.

It makes no sense to say: 'I'm leaving Liverpool for a worse club and I'm only number two there.

“But I'm not in a pressure situation at all, I don't have to change.

“I can move forward in training at Liverpool. As the second-choice goalkeeper in England you know that you get your chances.

'I am currently at the best club in the world, play for titles, have the highest level around me every day in training.

“I am fully aware that I am in a good position to be in Liverpool. I have great conditions there.”

Football has been littered with players over the years of players staying at a club virtually ‘stealing a wage’ and not really adding any value to their side.

That leads to a great level of frustration as the less they play, the more they lose currency on the open market and become virtually impossible to move on.

The role of a back-up goalkeeper is slightly different as a opportunity can arise at any moment, be it a through a suspension or injury as has been seen with the injuries suffered by Alisson during this campaign.

Karius may feel by training in familiar surroundings with a manager who has been a great support to him and learning from a world class keeper could be beneficial to him as he assesses where he is in his career.

As has been frequently noted, goalkeepers mature much later than outfield players and at just 26, he has time on his side.

I'd rather him than Adrian *dons hardhat*

Adrian is shite he although he did help us win the Super cup - if Karius had of played that final instead we would have lost.

Yet maybe if Karius had played the Atletico game we'd still be in the European Cup?  Who knows?  Not me, and I don't fucking want to either.

I think I read that Adrian wants to go back to his home town club , so if that was the case I would like the Turkish lad ,, but failing that Karius is a better bet than Lonergan, Kelleher etc.

If you're betting on the opposition winning, yes.

Karius is shite, never going to forgive him for the CL final for being worse than a fat pisshead forced to go in goal for his Sunday league team because the real keeper never turned up.

Sell him and at least get some money for him so we can get a reliable backup who can actually save shots hit straight at him.

I've always said that I don't hold Kiev against him because I'm utterly convinced that was down to a concussion.

The problem is he wasn't very good to begin with and something like that happening, and the exposure it brought, was always going to be too much for him to overcome.

I bear him no ill will, but he can't stay here. There's absolutely no way back.

It doesn't matter who our backup keeper is. They're all pretty much similar degrees of shite. Could be Karius, could be Adrian, who really cares.

I care when we're losing big European games because of them!

Admittedly it's hard getting a good quality back up, but we need to do a better job of it.

Really disappointed with Adrian as I thought he was better than he was. The Chelsea game was bad, then he followed it up with that stinker against Atletico. Not good enough.

We should be looking for an experienced keeper who is a current regular at Championship  level. Someone who may not be fantastic but isn't going to wet his pants if called on. There must be someone who is 30 or so and would be happy for a decent contract at the best club in the world.

I would say Kelleher is more likely. Lonergan would be worse backup than Adrian.

Kelleher looks pretty awful based on those League Cup games he played in. Still very much a kid in men's football. Don't think hes getting near the first team other than the odd cup match.

Lest we forget.

I still can't get my head around the physics of the first one. It doesn't seem possible.

What pisses me off about the second one beyond the initial fuckup is his reaction to it, he doesn't even attempt to chase the ball but appears to stand still and then do two star jumps. That's one thing you always notice with him, he does weird shit that you don't often associate with bad goalkeeping. Often if a goalie makes a mistake they've let it slip through their fingers or missed a catch or something, it's been a timing or technique issue, but I swear I've seen Karius do things like crouch down when the ball's high or throw his leg out to the opposite side of where the ball is heading, he just looks like he's having a long series of petit mals.

If we watched the matches after drinking 2 litres of vodka, maybe, just maybe, we won't notice.

Actually scratch that. I was pissed for Karius CL final and it didn't help one bit.

Think it's harsh on him that crying photo is on 90% or articles about him. He needs to move on and be allowed to move on. Somewhere else.

He can hardly move on if he's talking about staying and fighting for his place. He needs to just shut the fuck up and if he needs to say anything just use stock lines like 'We will see what happens' or more appropriately 'It's out of my hands!' (Pun fully intended.)

And once he gets there he can move on some move.

Everything about us now is geared to absolute precision. Factoring in every variable possible to get an edge and a few extra per cent. Klopp talking in the week about not letting players shower after training atm to try and make it awkward for them, so they’re prepared as much as possible for whatever facilities crop up in our remaining games.

Apart from anything else with Karius, the sideshow if he plays for us again will be the very opposite of that sort of meticulous, smooth planning. All the focus will be on him, it will create loads of nervous energy and tension and have everyone else/the media like absolute vultures, waiting for even the hint of a slip. Which we all know he’ll make. Imagine opposition fans now, if he plays for us again.

Fuck that, he can’t cope with it. We know he can’t. In truth, he was done here forever after the final. Klopp’s a humane man and gave him a chance to dispel that situation, and it was painful to see him floundering under it for his sake, let alone ours. Just don’t see the point in taking the risk now when we’re this much further on in our development.

Watching those goals again makes me feel sick to my stomach. Forget the fact we won it 12 months later but we should have really won that final in 2018 as Madrid were there for the taking and that clown gift wrapped them the European cup.

I handled the loss in 2007 fine as we had beaten them two years previously and having lost it to Milan in 2007 I thought fair enough we are now even but that loss in Kiev was devastating.

We should be on 7 not 6. That is the single most damaging performance a player has given in all my time supporting us.

Well that clown and having no bench.   Game changed the minute lallana came on for salah.

We"d have won it with that clown if the injury didn't happen.
