Elliott:  I can challenge for a first team spot next season

Harvey Elliott believes he can be another attacking option for Jurgen Klopp next season.

The 18-year old winger has flourished on loan at Blackburn Rovers scoring six goals while developing the creative side to his game by contributing 11 assists for the Championship side and being nominated for the EFL Young Player Of the Year award.

Despite making a few cameo appearances for the league champions last season, he knew it was best for his career path to have some regular minutes.

The Echo (via The Counter Attack Podcast) reported Elliott as saying:

“I had a few appearances here and there last season and took this loan with Blackburn, which I personally thought would be the best thing for me.

"I had a chat with Jurgen as well and he said for me to go and express myself, and that the move would be the best thing for my career and for me to get the games and experience. He said he'd support me 100%.

The Championship is well known for being one of the most physically demanding leagues in all of Europe.

Elliott has made over 40 appearances for Rovers this season which has moved his career game tally past the half century mark.

It is something which the youngster feels will put him in good stead ahead of the next step in his career

“Next season I am going to go back thinking I can get in the team. I have had this experience and feel ready, and have 50 appearances under my belt, which is a lot for a teenager."

Elliott has undoubtedly grown as a player but he knows competition for spots in the Liverpool first team will be fierce.

“I feel 100% confident I can go in and challenge. I'm looking forward to the fight and showing to people I am a different player and ready to play when called upon.

"I will need to work hard and train well and if I get my chance, I have to take it."

While Jurgen Klopp is a clear admirer of his talents, so too is Tony Mowbray with the veteran manager effusive in what he has delivered for Rovers during this campaign.

“Harvey is a wonderful talent. I don’t want to keep eulogising about him, because the statistics and his quality on the ball stand out for all to see.

“I watched him in training once and he almost scored a goal, Pearsy (Aynsley Pears) made a brilliant save, where he ran through six men and had a shot from the edge of the box, it was like the ball was stuck to his boot.

“We took him because he’s got class and we knew that he was going to help us. It didn’t matter that he was 17.

“He is a great kid, he wants to introduce himself to everyone, he’s an amazing young guy, he’s got personality so he can get tetchy.

"We haven’t fallen out but we’ve had words on some occasions and he’s a brilliant football player.

While acknowledging the quality of his Liverpool teammates is elite, there is one player who stands out in the mind of Elliott.

“Firmino. When he is on the ball, you can't get it off him. He is a joke.

“It's a Brazilian thing. They are all technically so good, Fabinho and even Alisson whenever they are on the ball.

"Everyone has their different qualities and you can see why they are one of the best teams in the world. They have talent and skill and all work 100%.

"But when I first saw Firmino, I was just dazed watching him as what he was doing with the ball was unbelievable."

I would say that it's probably too early to tell the full extent of the injury? It looked far worse than a dislocation.

Klopp has said it's a dislocation that they couldn't reset but too early to put a time scale on it.

Gutted for the lad but I don't feel he should be anywhere near the first team just yet. Before his injury today I thought he was pretty poor. Who knew we'd get injuries this season though?

He was good the first half and fadded the second.  Considering he was injured during the International break him fading wasn't unexpected.

Gary Neville claimed it was only a red card due to the injury. He's pretty good at being a cunt, isn't he?

Well he's had plenty of practice

I know ever injury is different but would a dislocation be better than a break? He tried to get up but luckily he was sat down again, could have done more damage. What a shame he's already looking a top player. Good thing is he's so young and should heal very quickly.

As well as a great player, he seems a really good kid.  He showed his class in the way he applauded their applauds, although the songs Leeds fans sang when he was down and afterwards, confirms why they are utter scum. “There’s only one Don Revie” during the Busby minute silence. Down there with Millwall and Chelsea IMO.

Just a quick comment on the reaction of players when someone has a horrific injury, and this nothing on just Mo. Instead of always running away with head in hands, maybe support the poor sod who has had a career threatening injury and is lying in pain.  Imagine if a soldier ran away at the sight of their comrade with a their guts spilling out. That’s when they need their mates most.

Having viewed it back and seeing the pictures it doesn't look deliberate, he kind of lands on his ankle and it gets trapped. Very unfortunate.

Gutted for him, at least he has some time on his side at 18. Hope he recovers quickly and strongly.

Didnt catch the first half today so dont know how he did. But think he’s shown in the other matches that he’s one of the best midfielders at the club, and certainly good enough to start quite a few PL games.

The difference is that a footballer should never have to look at their mates back to front leg, it’s just a game and they’re players, a soldier knows what he’s signing up for and blood and guts is very much in the job description.

TBF a dislocation is about the worst "look" you can have. The fella is a heck of a player.

You're not wrong. I've just googled "ankle dislocation recovery timeline" and one of the top links featured a very gruesome-looking injury where the foot is about 6 inches sideways from where it should be!

That said, it seems like assuming you can reset the ankle without surgery (which is apparently the case with Harvey) that it's about 12 weeks until you have full range of motion back in most cases. So 3 months out in cast/doing rehab, plus however long it takes him to return to full fitness from what he loses over that 3 months. I'm guessing it'll end up being 4-5 months, most likely.

Sounds reasonable if there isn't too much ligament damage.

Won't his ligaments be fucked though ?

Imagine if it had been Ronaldo on the end of the tackle.

The media would be calling for a longer ban

Why is anyone surprised Neville is a cunt?

He was always a cunt, has always been a cunt and always will be a cunt.

He just slagged utd off a few times when he first started on sky to try and get some reputation as being neutral and idiots fell for it.
