PODCAST: Everton 2 Liverpool 0 - Match Reaction

The Reds' ailing title challenge suffered a fatal blow in the worst place possible as Everton registered a deserved 2-0 in the Merseyside Derby at Goodison.

Chris Smith is joined by Ian Brown and Dave Usher to discuss a dismal night when defensive lapses and misfiring forwards were coupled with an absence of the energy and synonymous with Jurgen Klopp's great sides. Sadly, it really did feel like the end.

As this era comes to a sad close, the lads try to look to a future under Klopp's rumoured replacement Arne Slot, and address some looming decisions over the futures of the squad's biggest names.

I know Quansah was generally good against United but the season turning to absolute shit happened the second he decided to play that pass across the back against them.  We haven’t recovered since that moment.  It wasn’t just a freak situation either.  It had been coming for weeks beforehand and his decision making on the ball was getting worse and worse until that point.  He 100% let us down there.

The thought of Slot playing the inverted full back is beyond depressing.

Extremely harsh there. He didn’t let anyone down at all.

The season turning to shit was the FA Cup game, not the league game. And if anyone has let us down, it’s the attacking element of the team.

Dave had to cry himself to sleep before putting it out.

Now you see, I know this is probably a joke, but this is why I'm getting away from football.

It matters too fucking much, and it really shouldn't.

It's not even enjoyable when you win anymore because it will be tainted by VAR, shit refereeing etc.

Just get in the sea football, and fucking stay there.

Good pod in the circumstances. A team is always a reflection of its manager and if Jurgen is knackered or depressed or not arsed, whatever, it’s no surprise the team is mirroring that. That’s when senior players need to step up, but they haven’t unfortunately. Maybe we just aren’t good enough yet and the squad needs one or two additions. We shall of course find out.

Is right. The moment the season turned to shit was in the cup game when Nunez played that square ball at 2-3 that led to their equaliser. Confidence shattered at that point and hasn’t recovered since.

Even if that is the case then what the fuck does that say about the "mentality monsters" that they've allowed that to happen?

When the squad and level of the performances weren't that good to begin with and you're just getting results, it's those sorts of events that ultimately kill the spirit.

I really don't know any more. On the one hand, they've won more points than anyone from losing positions (usually after gifting the opening goal in the most dozy fashion). On the other they've been very fragile for the past month and been severely lacking when the opposition has been very physical eg Atalanta and last night. I hear what you say about reading the room and adapting to the way the referee is officiating (ie giving them everything and us nothing), but there were fouls given last night when there was minimal or even zero contact, including, IIRC, the one against Jones which led to their goal. It's no surprise that all of our bookings were for dissent when our lads had a hissy fit when beyond-soft fouls were awarded against them. Not the right reaction, but not as bad as mine!

Fuck knows where we go from here, though.

Didn’t know you were still watching U21 games.

Are you writing reports for yourself?

No I don't watch them all the time, seen the last couple of games though. Generally I'll watch if there's lads playing that I want to watch.

That's interesting about Klopp tired or not arsed, because up until recently I had a feeling he was managing the shit out of us this season, turning things around constantly with halftime talks (I remember when we struggled to influence the game from the bench and looked like to be just plan A team) improving and motivating and overachieving and almost having his best season at Liverpool and then... boom. It has all stopped about a month ago.

That was really interesting listening. Hearing the contributors upset and flip flopping between speaking from the heart and the head was mirroring my own feelings.

I think it was said, but I was also harbouring that daft hope that Klopp might change his mind, but now I’m absolutely satisfied that it’s time for him to go.  He clearly is beyond jaded and needs to step back. I’ve personally never subscribed to the idea he’s our greatest ever manager; that remains Bob. But he’s in that top 4 and he leaves an absolute legend. But please please please make the goodbye a big Kop mosaic and chants and singing after the last game of the season. A parade with the fucking league cup hanging off the front of the bus would look awful. The front of the bus is only for special trophies and heroic middle aged men.

Brownie nailed it re: Diaz. Just a very meh player.

I feel he's the least of our attacking concerns.  He went through a bad patch and has come through.

Comparing him to Sadio is harsh.  Most players are going to fall short in that comparison.  He's no wonder player but he's no fraud either.

Someone said playing Darwin and Diaz together isn't a good idea, and I agree.  I would like to see if a deep lying Gakpo can pick out attacking runs from the wider positions ahead of him.  I think Diaz can do that, and I think Mo / Jota can.  I'd like to see us give that a go in the final few games.  Let's see if we can get our battered and bruised optimism back, at least.

Was a great pod and very well measured by you all (all things considered!). Even when Brownie was disagreeing with Chris and possibly Dave over Diaz I could agree with you all.

Thanks lads as I would have just wanted to get wrecked and call everyone a cunt after watching that shitshow.

What I would say is Klopp doesn’t look well, I’d guess it’s his mental health rather than physical, I said it in a few WhatsApp’s last night that he has the same washed out, drained look Kenny had at the end.  Maybe including delayed, nonsensical substitutions.

The shit hair dye hasn’t helped either as it just makes him look even older and more tired.

But if as I suspect he is suffering with his MH then I hope the break does him well and he’s able to become the jovial, mischievous, energetic madman we all fell in love with again.

Especially so he can fully appreciate his close family and new grandchild.

It’s just so fucking depressingly sad to watch this season fizzle out the way it has.

He and we deserved so much better than that absolute cunt Cundy on talkshite celebrating last nights result and asking if he was a failure at Liverpool?

Seriously @dave u how do you ever listen to that fucking station?

Maybe the scale of the challenge of trying to compete with an oil state, the unfairness of the challenge, not being backed the way he should have been financially by the club at crucial times, PGMOL and having to deal with pricks like Cundy, Neville and the vast majority of the media has contributed to his weariness.

Who of us could say we wouldn’t be a raving alcoholic with a lifetime ban from the FA and PL having endured that for nearly a decade.

Klopp has literally given this club everything he has to the point of making himself ill.

In doing so he beat the worlds most curropt football club to both end a 30 year wait for the league title and win a 6th European Cup all whilst leading the club with class, dignity and the fans adoring him for representing the club the way we’d want a manger to.

Please let’s give him and treat him with the respect and adoration he’s well and truly earnt and deserves despite the ending to the season.

I agree he doesn't look great. Doesn't sound great either as his breath seems to get raspier with every press conference. Hopefully there's nothing to any of that and a break will sort him out.

As for Talksport, I only listen in the car and even then it's just occasionally, and never when things aren't going good for us.
